George was born in 1810/11 in Scotland. The link to this George and parents is uncertain.

 

In 1841 George was a mason residing at Watson's Lane, Dundee with his wife Henrietta and Janet Colville (15 not Angus). In 1855 George was listed in the Manchester Trade Directory as a mason living at 9 Dalton Street, Manchester. In 1861 Slater's Manchester Directory he was a mason living at 162 Ridgeway Road, Butler Street, Manchester. In the 1861 census he was a stone mason residing at 10 Pine Street, Broughton near Salford, Lancashire with his wife Henrietta, children William, Thomas, Agnes, Jane and Elizabeth, and a lodger and dress maker Martha Rothwell (36 Whitfield). In 1869 and 1874 he was a stone mason, having moved to 102 Ridgeway Road. In 1881 his wife, son Thomas (traveller) and Eliza (scholar) were at home. In 1881 George was a retired mason living in Withington, Lancashire; at home were his wife and son William.

 

Note: Another probable daughter Eleanor Waugh Doig was married in Jan/Mar 1877 in Chorlton.

Ellen and children Lizzie, Isa, Kate, Effie, and John departed Glasgow on the ship "Caldonia" and arrived at Ellis Island in New York on 18 Feb 1907; also with them were Nellie Jardine, age 10 years and 6 months, and Mary Jardine, age 9, both from Johnstone. Departing later from Glasgow were Alexander, his son Alexander, and nephew James Alexander Doig, and they arrived on the ship "Caldonia" at Ellis Island on 13 May 1907. Ellen and son John returned for a visit to Scotland; they returned from Glasgow on the "Columbia" and arrived at Ellis Island on 16 June 1913.

 

Alexander was naturalized in 1913. In 1920 he was a machinist residing at 168 Maple, Kearney, Hudson Co., NJ with his wife Ellen and children Catherine, Ellen Jardine, Elspeth, Mary Jardine, and John.

Notes for Ann Couts Doig

In 1851 Ann lived with her father at the Joint Stock Building, Dundee; her mother was not in the household. The family moved to Glasgow, but Ann next appears in Grennock where she was a housekeeper and flax mill worker. She signed her name "X". She had syphilis from which her second illegitimate son died. She then moved to England where she had three move illegitimate children in Liverpool. In 1881 Ann Doig (39 Scotland) was an unmarried housekeeper residing at 45 Pellow Street, Liverpool; her marriage in that year records she ran a lodging house at Pellow Street. In 1891 Ann Cahill, a widow, lived at 3 Epworth Street, Everton with son William A. Doig, 15, a carpenter and joiner, and Jeannie Johnstone, 25 of Edinburgh, a servant to her, and Jeannie's son Alfred.

 

Note: Son William Andrew Doig has not been located in the 1881 census, although he appears with his mother in 1891. He reported on his marriage certificate in 1897 that his father was Samuel Doig. No Samuel Doig has been located who might have been her husband, and she is reported as unmarried in 1881.
