In 1861 Slater's Manchester Directory he was a mason living at 162 Ridgeway Road, Butler Street, Manchester. In the 1861 census he was a stone mason residing at 10 Pine Street, Broughton near Salford, Lancashire with his wife Henrietta, children William, Thomas, Agnes, Jane and Elizabeth, and a lodger and dress maker Martha Rothwell (36 Whitfield). In 1869 and 1874 he was a stone mason, having moved to 102 Ridgeway Road. In 1881 his wife, son Thomas (traveller) and Eliza (scholar) were at home.
