1.   David Doig was born about 1747 in Of Eassie, Angus, Scotland.

 

He may be the David born in Nevay and christened 27 May 1747 in Eassie & Nevay, the son of William Doig, brewer in Kirkinch of Nevay, and Elizabeth Nicol.  David’s son William was named after William Doig.  See file WILL1711.  Other possibilities exist from Kirriemuir.

 

David had a son in fornication by Susan White.  The child was born at Gateside of Eassie, a village on the road between Glamis and Kirriemuir.

 

David was in a non-marital relationship with (MRIN:1) Susan White in Not Married. Susan was born about 1751 in Of Eassie, Angus, Scotland.

She may be the Susann White christened 6 Jan 1751 in Meigle, Perth, daughter of John White.

David was noted as "born in fornication" in the parish records.

 

David was a wright in Dundee.

 

The death date is uncertain that it is this David Doig, but he lived in the area, and his wife was a widow when she was buried in the same graveyard.

 

David married (MRIN:2) Helen Neave, daughter of John Neave and Jean Stephen (MRIN:3), on 26 Sep 1797 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. Helen was born in 1770 in Rescobie, Angus, Scotland. She was christened on 12 Aug 1770 in Rescobie, Angus, Scotland. She died on 25 Apr 1838 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland from dropsy. She was buried on 27 Apr 1838 in Howff Graveyard, Dundee, Angus, Scotland.

Helen's father, John, is given on the marriage record. Her death record lists her as the widow of David Doig, wright, and born in Rescobie.

Elisabeth was named after Elisabeth Stiven, her mother’s aunt.

 

Burials are recorded for an Elizabeth Doig on 3 Dec 1817 and 16 Feb 1818 in the Howff Graveyard in Dundee. It is presumed one of these is this Elizabeth as she does not appear in any later records.

 

Third Generation

 

3.   David Doig (David, David) was born in 1794/1795 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. He died on 16 Jul 1872 in Cable's Close, Wellgate, Dundee, Angus, Scotland.

David was born several years before his parents were married. They are listed on his death certificate.

 

From 1819 to 1833 David was a shoemaker.  In 1841 David was a vintner living on Argyle Close, Dundee; his wife was not with him, but Helen and William were at home.  In 1851 David was a shoemaker living at 3 Batter Street, Dundee; with him were his wife and daughter, Isabella.  In 1861 he was a shoemaker living at 62 Ballie Street, Dundee, and his wife and daughter, Isabella, were still at home.

 

David's wife witnessed his death certificate.

 

David married (MRIN:4) Janet Crabb, daughter of David Crabb and Elizabeth Milne (MRIN:7), on 21 Dec 1819 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. Janet was born in 1788/1789 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. She died on 4 Jun 1879 in 7 Morrison's Court, Dundee, Angus, Scotland from general debility of old age.

Both were listed from Dundee.

         14   M     v.   William Herd Doig was born on 24 May 1831 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. He was christened on 5 Jun 1831 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland.

William went to sea as a boy in the Merchant Service at the age of 14. He registered on 19 June 1845 in Dundee, certificate #115498. He was described as 4’ 8½” tall, fair hair, hazel eyes, fair complexion, and with a cut on the brow. The certificate was cancelled after a voyage in 1846. He reregistered on 16 Oct 1847, certificate #201685.  He was listed as scrawny.  He sailed last on a steamer in Dundee on 2 Oct 1847, and soon after this certificate was canceled because “of hatred to sea.”

 

         15   F     vi.   Jean Crabb Doig was born on 4 Mar 1833 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. She was christened on 17 Mar 1833 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. She was buried on 9 Mar 1834 in Howff Graveyard, Dundee, Angus, Scotland.

Jean was named after her maternal aunt.

William was named after William Doig.

William was a wright and cabinet maker in Dundee. He probably died by 1841 as his wife and 3 living children lived with her father Peter Young. However, at his wife's death in 1843 she is was a widow and died in childbirth.

 

William married (MRIN:5) Catherine Young, daughter of Peter Young and Agnes Peebles (MRIN:11), on 27 Jun 1828 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. Catherine was born on 8 Jun 1806 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. She was christened on 15 Jun 1806 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. She died on 15 Jun 1843 in Matthew’s Close, Canongate, Dundee, Angus, Scotland from childbirth. Robert was named after his maternal uncle.

 

He may be the Robert (age 19 from Dundee) in 1851 who was a farm laborer at D. Bothy, Kettins.

 

         19   F     iv.   Agnes Doig was born on 11 Apr 1835 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. She was christened on 11 May 1835 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland.

Agnes was named after her maternal grandmother. In 1851 she was a niece residing with Janet [Young] and her husband David White at Termany Close, Overgate, Dundee.

James was named after James Hutcheson.

 

James was a shoemaker at the time of his marriage in 1826.  In 1841 he was a shoemaker living on Tods Burn Lane, Dundee.  In 1851 James was a bootmaker, employing one man, and living with his family at #20 Hilltown, Dundee.  In 1861 he lived at 2 George's Place, Dundee.  With he and his wife were daughters Helen and Jean; also Helen's children, James and Ann Soutar.

 

James married (MRIN:6) Euphemia Swan Edward, daughter of William Edward and Grizel West (MRIN:14), on 4 Jul 1826 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. Euphemia was born on 17 Jul 1809 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. She was christened on 13 Aug 1809 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. She died on 16 Oct 1869 in 88 Hilltown, Dundee, Angus, Scotland from heart disease.

10. Capt. David Neave Doig (David, David, David) was born on 6 Feb 1822 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. He was christened on 17 Feb 1822 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. He died in 1849/1851.

David went to sea as an apprentice on 8 Jan 1836.  He served 2 years and 8 months in the Royal Navy.  He registered in the Merchant Service on 17 Mar 1845 at Dundee, listing his residence as Argyle Close, Dundee.  Certificate #77,573 lists him as 5’8¾”, dark brown hair, fair complexion, and black eyes.  His last voyage was listed in 1848.

 

David married (MRIN:8) Agnes Ramsay Mudie, daughter of David Mudie and Mary Buist (MRIN:21), on 21 Mar 1848 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. Agnes was born on 16 Aug 1822 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. She was christened on 25 Aug 1822 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. She died on 10 Jun 1907 in Claremont, Cape Town, South Africa. She was buried in Maitland Cemetery, Cape Town, South Africa.

In 1851 Agnes and her son David Doig lived at Crichthon's Close, Dundee with her parents and brothers David and John. In 1861 Agnes was a milliner living at 44 Albert Street, Dundee with her mother and son David (scholar). In 1881 she was an annuitant visiting Jonathon Raitt in St. Vigeans.

In 1881 David, age 30 from Scotland, was a married mate on the vessel "Leon Raymunds" at South Shield, Durham, England.

 

David married (MRIN:22) Jemima Jane Fowler. Jemima was born in 1864/1865. She died on 15 Aug 1931 in Claremont, Cape Town, South Africa. She was buried in Maitland Cemetery, Cape Town, South Africa.

 

 

11. Helen (Ellen) Neave Doig (David, David, David) was born on 10 Apr 1824 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. She was christened on 18 Apr 1824 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. She died in 1904 in South Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Helen was named for Helen Neave, her paternal grandmother.

 

Helen married (MRIN:9) Richard Johnston, son of William Johnston and Jean (Jane) Gray (MRIN:24), on 5 Mar 1844 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. Richard was born in 1820/1821 in Bo'ness, West  Lothian, Scotland. He died in 1876 in Victoria, Australia.

         34   F   viii.   Helen (Ellen) Ann Johnston was born in 1867 in Emerald Hill, Victoria, Australia. She died in 1933 in Windsor, Victoria, Australia.

13. Isabella Henderson Doig (David, David, David) was born on 28 Oct 1828 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. She was christened on 9 Nov 1828 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. She died in 1899 in St. Clement, Dundee, Angus, Scotland.

In 1861 Isabella was an unmarried, steam loom worker, living with her parents at 44 Albert Street, Dundee.  Isabella had an illegitimate child in 1864.  In 1879 she witnessed her mother’s death certificate and signed her name “X.” In 1881 she was a mangle keeper living at 7 Morrison’s Court, Dundee. In 1891 she lived in St. Clement, Dundee.

 

She had the following children.

+       35   F       i.   Mary Ann Tasker Doig was born on 2 Mar 1864. She died in 1919.

16. David Scot Doig (William, David, David) was born on 20 May 1829 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. He was christened on 31 May 1829 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. He died on 19 Jun 1868 in Uorn Street, Alyth, Perth, Scotland from heart disease of many years and dropsy after 4 months.

David married (MRIN:13) Ann Lyon, daughter of Agnes Lyon, on 5 Jun 1847 in Ruthven, Angus, Scotland. Ann was born in 1823/1824 in Carmyllie, Angus, Scotland. She died on 18 Sep 1901 in 13 Brechin Road, Kirriemuir, Angus, Scotland from maliginant disease of intestines.

The link to parents is uncertain and based on place of birth and Lyon family there. Ann's daughter Isabella did not know the names of her parents.

 

In 1881 Ann lived at 27 Victoria Street, Dundee with her daughter and son-in-law, George Ford. In 1891 Ann Doig, widow, age 67 born in Carmyllie, was an annuitant living alone on Smythe Street, Alyth. In 1901 Ann and her unmarried daughter Isabella (house keeper, age 45) resided at 13 Brechin Road, Kirriemuir.

 

Witness to Ann's death was her daughter Isabella Doig who only supplied her father's surname, Lyon.

 

They pledged marriage on 23 May 1847 in Meigle, Perth. David was listed from Meigle and Ann from Ruthven.

 

David and Ann had the following children.

+       38   F     iii.   Lily Ann Doig was born in Feb 1851. She died in 1933.

         39   F     iv.   Isabella Doig was born in 1852/1854 in Coupar-Angus, Perth, Scotland. She died in 1933 in Kirriemuir, Angus, Scotland.

In 1881 Isabella was an unmarried domestic servant to horse dealer Donald McIntosh and family at Newton Cottage, Kirriemuir, Angus. In 1891 she lived in Kirriemuir. In 1901 she lived with her mother in Kirriemuir. She did not marry.

 

+       40   F      v.   Jessie Doig was born on 1 Feb 1855. She died in 1951.

         41   F     vi.   Sophia Doig was born on 24 Feb 1857 in Bendochy, Perth, Scotland. She died in 1930 in St. Clement, Dundee, Angus, Scotland.

In 1881 Sophia was a jute mill worker living in Alyth.  Her brother, John, lived with her. In 1891 she lived St. Peter, Dundee.

 

Sophia married (MRIN:34) Thomas Cuthbert in 1895 in Alyth, Perth, Scotland. Thomas was born about 1857 in Scotland.

         42   M   vii.   David Doig was born on 15 Jan 1859 in Bendochy, Perth, Scotland. He died on 4 Apr 1862 in Leutfie, Alyth, Perth, Scotland from burn on the arm and side after 10 days, due to tetanus after 3 days.

+       43   M  viii.   James Doig was born on 14 Feb 1861. He died in 1934.

         44   M    ix.   William Simpson Doig was born on 4 Mar 1866 in Alyth, Perth, Scotland.

In 1881 William was a farm servant in Bendochy, Perth to John Matheson. William entered the United States in 1888.  In 1900 he was a mining laborer in Knox Township, Napa County, California; he was single, a border with James H. Smith along with 25 others.

 

+       45   M     x.   John Wallace Doig was born on 3 Aug 1868. He died in 1947.

 

 

21. Helen Neave Doig (James, David, David) was born on 11 Oct 1829 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. She was christened on 25 Oct 1829 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland.

Helen was named after her paternal grandmother.

 

In 1851 Helen was unmarried and a factory worker living with her parents at #10 Hilltown, Dundee.

 

Helen married (MRIN:16) Thomas Soutar on 1 Jul 1853 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. Thomas was born about 1828 in Scotland.

In 1851 David was a journeyman bootmaker living with his new family at Soutar's Land, Dundee, and in 1855 a shoemaker at 40 Robertson's Land, Hilltown, Dundee.  In 1861 he lived at Hilltown, Dundee.  In 1881 he was a widower and shoemaker residing at 88 Hilltown, Dundee with his children William (painter), Helen (sack machinist), Thomas (mill worker), and Jessie (scholar).

 

David married (MRIN:17) Helen Reilly, daughter of Bernard Reilly and Janet Low (MRIN:37), on 26 Apr 1850 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. Helen was born in 1830 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. She was christened on 7 Jan 1830 in Saint Andrews Roman Catholic, Dundee, Angus, Scotland. She died on 23 Aug 1876 in Hilltown, St. Clement, Dundee, Angus, Scotland from chronic pneumonia.

In 1881 Thomas was a mill worker in Dundee living with his father. In 1899 he was a fruiters warehouseman residing at 64 Hilltown, Dundee.

 

Thomas married (MRIN:42) Isabella McDowall Todd, daughter of James Todd and Margaret Murray (MRIN:143), on 29 Jan 1897 in Arcade Hall, Kings Road, St. Andrew, Dundee, Angus, Scotland. Isabella was born on 31 Jul 1870 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. She died in 1932 in St. Andrew, Dundee, Angus, Scotland.

In 1899 Isabella was a flax reeler residing at 18 Rosebank Road, Dundee.

In 1856 Fanny Haggan lived at 22 Hilltown, Dundee. In 1861 Fanny Haggan (Hogan) was a factory worker at 30 Arbroath Road & 1 Lowden's Court, St. Andrew, Dundee with children Ann Laing, James Laing, Margaret Laing, Robert Lang and William Walker Haggan, and 2 lodgers.

 

Fanny married (MRIN:18) Robert Laing, son of James Laing and Elizabeth (Betty, Betsy) Ramsay (MRIN:44), on 3 Oct 1856 in Victoria Street, Dundee, Angus, Scotland. Robert was born in 1831/1832 in Mains, Angus, Scotland. He died in 1863/1867 in Of Dundee, Angus, Scotland.

In 1861 Robert was a tinsmith at 2 Wallace Street, Dundee, living with his mother, wife Fanny, children Ann and James, and 4 boarders.

He was married to the former Velma Case Fero of Springfield. besides his wife he leaves one son, James Doig of Springfield; Two daughters, Mrs. Mary Stone of Easthamption and Mrs. Taddeus Suleski of Northampton; one stepson, Robert M. Fero of West Springfield; two sisters, Mrs. Henrietta Morrison of Hollywood Fla., and Mrs. Isabella Young of Pompano Beach, Fla.; a brother, Albert Doig of Palm Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the O'Brien funeral home in Easthampton. Burial will be at the Oakgrove Cemetery, Springfield. In 1910 Albert lived with his brother William in Boston; it records he was a machinist who entered the US in 1909. He appears to have returned to Scotland. Albert departed Glasgow on 21 Jan 1911 on the ship "Sicilian" and arrived at Boston on 5 Feb 1911; his contact was his father Edward S. Doig of 4 Smith Street, Dundee. He was listed at that time as single.

 

Albert registered for the Draft in WWI on 6 March 1917 in Indianapolis, IN; he was a laborer there in a paper factory; he was listed as married at the time. During WWI Albert joined at Montreal the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force on 6 Aug 1918. At the time he was a machinist residing at 58 E. Eagle Street, Boston, MA, his wife listed as Marie. In July 1919 he was on a military transport landing at Halifax, Nova Scotia; next of kin "wife" at 58 W. Eagle Street, East Boston, MA.

 

In 1930 Albert was an automobile oil salesman residing at 81 Woods Avenue, Somerville, Middlesex Avenue, MA with is wife Mary and children Alfred , Mary, and Jessie; at the time he was listed as an alien. In 1940 he was a sales engineer for a chain oil concern at 54 Elm Street, Dartmouth, Bristol Co., MA with Mary and daughters Mary and Jessie.

 

Alfred P. Doig registered for the Draft in WWII. At the time he lived at 59 Elm Street, Dartmouth, Bristol Co., MA with wife Mary [indistinct]. He worked for Socan Jac Oil Co. in Cambridge.

 

Albert became a naturalized citizen of the US on 29 Aug 1944 in Boston.

 

Albert and Mary visited London for 3 months, last residing at the Green Park Hotel, London; they returned on the "Rotterdam", arriving on 25 Apr 1960. On the same ship were Earl and Gladys Doig (not related).

Alfred Doig - Obituary in Metrowest Daily News, Monday, February 20, 2006 __WESTWOOD -- Alfred R. Doig, 91, a resident of Westwood since 1948, died Friday, Feb. 17, 2006, at the Newton-Wellesley Alzheimer’s Center in Wellesley, after a brief illness.

 

He was the husband of the late Lillian June (Stidham) Doig.

 

Born in Dundee, Scotland, the son of Albert P. and Mary (Lowden) Doig, he attended Boston University before joining the U.S. Army. He served two combat tours in the South Pacific with the Americal Division during World War II, and was discharged with the rank of major. He retired from the Massachusetts National Guard as a Lt. Colonel after 30 years, beginning in the 110th Cavalry and later, with the 180th Field Artillery.

 

Mr. Doig worked for 51 years as a manager for the John Hancock Insurance Co. in Boston until his retirement in 1982. He was the National Commander of the Americal Division Veterans Association, a member of the Dugout Club (consisting of retired officers of the Massachusetts National Guard), a member of Constellation Lodge AF & AM of Dedham, and a member of the Islington Community Church in Westwood.

 

He leaves his son, Alfred R. Doig Jr. of Natick; two sisters, Mary Nicholson of South Dartmouth, and Jessie Clark of Ohio; and his two grandsons, Ian and Andrew Doig.

 

He was the father of Douglas W. Doig, who was killed in action in 1966 in Vietnam.

 

A funeral service will be held Thursday, Feb. 23, at 10 a.m., at the First Baptist Church, 808 High St., Westwood, with the Reverend Lawrence Whitlock officiating.

 

Private burial will be in Blue Hill Cemetery in Braintree.

 

Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, Feb 22, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at the Folsom Funeral Home, 649 High St. (Rt. 109), Westwood with a Masonic Service by Constellation Lodge AF & AM of Dedham at 8 p.m.

WESTWOOD - Lillian June (Stidham) Doig, 91, a resident of Westwood since 1948, died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, at her home in Westwood after a long illness.

 

She was the wife of Alfred R. Doig. Born Dec. 25, 1914, in Boston, the daughter of the late Lillian M. (Duplisea) and Raymond W. Stidham, she attended Katharine Gibbs School in Boston and was an active member of the former Islington Community Church in Westwood.

 

Besides her husband, she leaves her son, Alfred R. Doig Jr. of Natick; two grandchildren, Ian and Andrew Doig; and several nieces and nephews.

 

She was the mother of Douglas W. Doig, who was killed in action in 1966 in Vietnam, and sister of the late Elizabeth F. Steen.

 

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 4, at noon at First Baptist Church, 808 High St. (Rte. 109), Westwood. Burial will be private.

 

Visiting hours are Wednesday, Jan. 4, from 11 a.m. to noon, at the church.

 

Memorial donations may be made to American Parkinson's Disease Association, 720 Harrison Ave., Boston, MA 02118.

 

Funeral arrangements are by Folsom Funeral Home of Westwood.

Full Obituary:           SOUTH DARTMOUTH Mary Doig Nicholson, age 87, of South Dartmouth, died Thursday, December 4, 2008, at home. She was the wife of the late John Baker Nicholson. Daughter of the late Mary and Albert Doig, she was a graduate of Dartmouth High School and Lasell Junior College. A longtime member of the Congregational Church of South Dartmouth, she was a member of the N.B. Yacht Club, the Allendale Country Club, the N.B. Mother's Club, the Ladies Branch of the N.B. Port Society and the Friends of Dartmouth Libraries Inc. Mary is survived by her three children, Jane Nicholson of San Francisco, Calif, Ann Griffith of Lexington, Ma, and Gale Beaton of Boston, Ma.; her grandchildren, Colby, Emma, Camden and Granger Griffith and Paige Beaton; her siblings, Jessie Doig Clark of Ohio and the late Alfred Doig.
