[This connection is based on George having been born in 1784/5 in Glamis in the 1851 census and the common occupation of shoemaker. He is less likely to be the George christened 24 Apr 1785 in Glamis, the son of David Doig, weaver in Tarbrax, Glen of Ogilvy south of Glamis; that David moved his family to Hilltown, Dundee in 1786 where he became a manufacturer. The other George married Helen Gardner.]

 

In 1841 and 1851 George was a shoemaker living in Glamis. In 1841 his wife, John, Agnes, and Jessie were with him; also a Nancy Doig, christened 22 Nov 1829 in Strathmartine, the daughter of George Doig and Helen Gardner.

 

MARRIAGE: In the marriage record George was listed as a shoemaker and both from Forfar.

Christian Doig (age not specified) died on 27 Dec 1847 in the house of Robert Doig in Glammis.

Notes for William Doig

The link to Agnes Fyffe is based on the christening record of daughter Helen Doig listing her father as a journeyman wright in Alyth and approximate age. There is a lack of marriage or other children recorded suggesting she was illegitimate or Agnes died shortly after. The other possible William, also a wright, was born in 1789 in Glamis (file WILL1759).

 

In 1820 William was a wright in Skene Street, Old Machar, Aberdeen. In 1841 William was a wright and house carpenter living with his family at Woodside Fens, St. Vigeans; Jessie was not living with the family. In 1851 he was living at Guthrie Port, Inverbrothock, Arbroath, in St. Vigeans Parish. In 1861 William was a cabinetmaker and joiner at 2 Rosebank, Arbroath with his wife and daughter (stepdaughter) Isabella Greig, a flax spinner in a factory born 1843/4 in Rescobie, Angus. In 1871 he was formerly a joiner residing at 28 Lillies Wynd, Arbroath with his wife Helen (landress) and daughter-in-law Helen Greig (flaxmill spinner).

 

At the time of his death William was a pauper. The informant on his death certificate was his second wife, Helen. [The death record lists his father as Thomas Doig, shoemaker, in error.]

 

MARRIAGE to Isabella Cameron: William and Isabella proclaimed marriage on 23 May 1819 in Kinnettles, Angus. William was listed from Kinnettles and Isabella from Inverarity; they paid 1 shilling at their proclamation.

 

MARRIAGE to Helen Lundie: Both were listed from St. Vigeans.
