First Generation

1. Robert Doig  was born on 12 Nov 1755 in Of Glamis, Angus, Scotland. He died before 1834 in Of Glamis, Angus, Scotland.

The birth of Robert Doig is not recorded in the parish records; he may be the son of George Doig,

shoemaker in Glamis, and Euphem Ogilvie (see file GEOX1685). Also, David Doig (see file DAVE1750)

may be a brother as they both had oldest sons named John and lived in Newtown, Glamis; this would

suggest their father was named John. [If you are a male Doig descendant please join our DNA Project.]

Robert was a shoemaker in Dundee and later a master shoemaker in Glamis. He also worked as a

handloom weaver. He is listed in the 1801 Glamis list of military men as a "piker."

Death presumed before 1834 as deaths were recorded from that year, and Robert does not appear.

A copy of births from a family Bible or similar paper, written in old script, lists Robert as married twice, with

12 children by Isabella Neave and 6 children by Jean Brymer. [1974 photocopy of 1896 "birthday book"

made by William James Keilor Dick, son of Ann Swanson Doig, Robert's great-granddaughter; document

in the possession of Betsy Doig (1887-1963).]

Company of the Central Regiment Of Forfarshire Local Volunteers (Dunnichen Volunteers): George Doig

[This connection is based on George having been born in 1784/5 in Glamis in the 1851 census and the

common occupation of shoemaker.  He is less likely to be the George christened 24 Apr 1785 in Glamis,
