Notes for Alexander Doig

Alexander Doig, flaxdresser in Alyth, is listed as the father of William Warden Doig to Janet Cameron. It is not recorded if William was lawful or illegitimate. The child probably died as an infant as Alexander had another son William.

 

At the birth of his children in 1825, 1828, 1830 and 1835, Alexander occupation was listed as a flax dresser in Alyth; in 1833, 1838, and 1843 as a mason. In 1841 Alexander was a linen handloom weaver living on Commercial Street, Alyth; children living at home were David, Peter, Charles, and Alexander.

 

In 1851 Ann was a linen yarn winder living on James Street, Alyth. Alexander was not at home, but children Alexander and Janet were still with Ann. Ann worked as a housekeeper. In 1861 the three were still on James Street in Alyth, and niece Mary Doig and nephews Alexander and David Doig were living with them. In 1871 he was a mason living alone at 16 Abbey Street, Arbroath.

 

Alexander was listed as alive and a mason in 1857 and 1858 at his son's weddings. He was listed a deceased flax dresser in 1859, an error.

 

Alexander died a pauper at age 73 in the Poorhouse, St. Vigeans; the informant was William Whyte, House Governor.

Value of Estate, £88, 19s. 4d.

 

[A family tale of the descendants of James Sandy has been passed down that Margaret Sandy was actually Margaret Bain. Margaret Bain was born about 1803, the daughter of Alexander Bayne, vintner in Muthill, Perthshire. Margaret married first at the age of 16 to James (Jamie) Sandy on 14 Mar 1819 in Alyth. Jamie was the older brother of Gilbert Sandy, and he was 56 at the time and an invalid. He was a notable and eccentric inventor. Jamie died 19 days after the marriage. Margaret bore a son James Sandy about Dec 1819 in Alyth. She retained her married name when she married James Doig 25 years later. However, the census records of 1851, 1861, and 1881 and her death certificate place Margaret Sandy's birth in 1825/6.]

In 1848 David was a blacksmith in Alyth. In 1851 the family lived at 7 Muslin Street, Calton, Glasgow. In 1856 the family lived at 26 Clarshorn Street, Glasgow. In 1859 he was a mechanic residing on Main Street, Lennoxtown, Campsie, Stirlingshire.

 

The link to illegitimate son John Winning Doig is not certain. The birth certificate list the parents as David Doig, stone mason, and Elizabeth Winning. It appears that both David Doig and Elizabeth Winning, nee Walker, had recently lost their spouses. Campsie is next to Baldernoch.

 

In 1861 David's children David, Mary, and Alexander were living with his mother in Alyth. In 1871 John lived in Campsie, Stirling with his wife Mary and children Alexander, Ann, Margaret, and Jeannie. In 1881 he lived in Lennoxtown, Campsie, Stirling. In 1891 David and Jane lived in Campsie with children Ann, Robert, Jeannie, Maria, Elizabeth, and Rachel. In 1901 he lived in Campsie with his wife Mary and children Annie and Maria.
