Notes for Alexander Doig
This portion of the family history is dedicated to HAROLD ARTHUR LEOPOLD DOIG (1922-1998). Harold, in Queensland, and myself (Ken Doig), in California, exchanged reams of handwritten notes across the Pacific by water-snail mail. While he was alive we were never able to connect up his William Doig as the son of this Alexander Doig or Alexander to his father. It was evident from his letters that Harold, a retired school principal, was a gentleman, a far cry from some of his scoundrel ancestors. We thank you Harold for the telling detail.
Witnesses to the christenings of Alexander's children include William Doig, David Doig, and James Doig, which probably include his brothers, and/or uncles.
In 1828 and 1833 Alexander was a blacksmith living in Dundee. About 1837 he moved to Barony, Lanark, a suburb of Glasgow, where he was listed as a smith. In 1851 Alexander (44 Forgan, Perthshire) was a boiler maker foreman residing in Burn Bank Cottage, North Woodside Road, Maryhill, Glasgow with his wife Jane (35 Easdale, Argyll) and children Robert (scholar, 11 Glasgow), Hannah (scholar, 9 Glasgow), James (7 Glasgow) and Jane (2 months, Glasgow). [Notes: Forgan is likely Longforgan, Perth, near Dundee. Son James shown born in 1839 but age 7 in 1851.]
Alexander arrived in Victoria, Australia on the "Lochlomond" in Apr 1853; with him were his wife Jane with children Alexander, Robert, Hannah, and Jane plus a Janet, and Amelia Doig with no age listed. [Robert and Jane are presumed children of Alexander, but the relationship of Janet is uncertain, Amelia being the daughter of son Alexander.]
In 1856 Alexander was living in Emerald Hill (South Melbourne), Victoria, Australia. He deserted the family about 1858. Jane returned to Scotland. She returned to Victoria on the "White Star" in Jan 1860 with William (age 20), James (18), Hannah (16), Jane (7), and Anne (5). In 1870 Alexander was a boilermaker off York Street, Emerald Hill.
Alexander died at age 78 on 29 July 1884 at sea on the "Cuzco" of fatty degeneration of the heart and effects of extreme heat. He was a passenger listed as a retired boilermaker last living at Crown Street, Emerald Hill. The ship arrived in port on 31 Oct 1884. His death was recorded in Cusio, Victoria and on the Scottish marine returns (022/MR-65).
