Notes for Alexander Doig

This portion of the family history is dedicated to HAROLD ARTHUR LEOPOLD DOIG (1922-1998). Harold, in Queensland, and myself (Ken Doig), in California, exchanged reams of handwritten notes across the Pacific by water-snail mail. While he was alive we were never able to connect up his William Doig as the son of this Alexander Doig or Alexander to his father. It was evident from his letters that Harold, a retired school principal, was a gentleman, a far cry from some of his scoundrel ancestors. We thank you Harold for the telling detail.

Witnesses to the christenings of Alexander's children include William Doig, David Doig, and James Doig, which probably include his brothers, and/or uncles.

In 1828 and 1833 Alexander was a blacksmith living in Dundee. About 1837 he moved to Barony, Lanark, a suburb of Glasgow, where he was listed as a smith. In 1851 Alexander (44 Forgan, Perthshire) was a boiler maker foreman residing in Burn Bank Cottage, North Woodside Road, Maryhill, Glasgow with his wife Jane (35 Easdale, Argyll) and children Robert (scholar, 11 Glasgow), Hannah (scholar, 9 Glasgow), James (7 Glasgow) and Jane (2 months, Glasgow). [Notes: Forgan is likely Longforgan, Perth, near Dundee. Son James shown born in 1839 but age 7 in 1851.]

Alexander arrived in Victoria, Australia on the "Lochlomond" in Apr 1853; with him were his wife Jane with children Alexander, Robert, Hannah, and Jane plus a Janet, and Amelia Doig with no age listed.  [Robert and Jane are presumed children of Alexander, but the relationship of Janet is uncertain, Amelia being the daughter of son Alexander.]

In 1856 Alexander was living in Emerald Hill (South Melbourne), Victoria, Australia.  He deserted the family about 1858. Jane returned to Scotland. She returned to Victoria on the "White Star" in Jan 1860 with William (age 20), James (18), Hannah (16), Jane (7), and Anne (5). In 1870 Alexander was a boilermaker off York Street, Emerald Hill.

Alexander died at age 78 on 29 July 1884 at sea on the "Cuzco" of fatty degeneration of the heart and effects of extreme heat. He was a passenger listed as a retired boilermaker last living at Crown Street, Emerald Hill. The ship arrived in port on 31 Oct 1884. His death was recorded in Cusio, Victoria and on the Scottish marine returns (022/MR-65).

Notes for William Doig

The link to parents is based on William born at the right time and place to be a first child of Alexander Doig and Pomelia Burns, moving to Barony at time his father lived there, moving to Emerald Hill, Victoria, Australia just before his father joined him, common occupation of boilermaker, naming daughter Pomelia and son Alexander for a middle name, and both abandoning their families.

At the time of his marriage in 1847 William was a boilermaker in Barony. He was not with the family in the 1851 cenus, and probably had abandoned his family by that time.

William is probably the one who arrived in Victoria, Australia in Aug 1852 on the "Lady Head" out of Liverpool.  His age was listed as 24, or born 1827/8.  He would have then moved on to Sydney, NSW where he met his bride to be.

William and Bridget moved to Emerald Hill, Victoria, south of Melbourne.  He was a boilermaker and blacksmith. In 1856 he was a householder off York Street, Emerald Hill.  The family had a very difficult time with the death of Pomela in 1855 and George in 1858.  Son Alfred later told his half-brother William of a very unsettled home where religious differences caused heated arguments and eventual separation.  After George Alexander's birth in 1859 William left home and Bridget went to Geelong.

The two boys, Alfred and George, were left abandoned.  They were presented five months later at the Immigrant's Home at Princes Bridge, Mt. Royal, Brisbane.  The Police Gazette, (Victoria, 9 Nov 1863), p 404, reported: 'Doig, William is charged on warrant with deserting his children, in the care of Ann Lee [his future wife] of Melbourne.  He is a boilermaker, aged 32, 5'6' or 5'7' in height, stout build, fair complexion, curly hair cut square around the neck, sandy whiskers and good looking.  He is supposed to be about Geelong.'  He was reputed to have an eye for the ladies.  His age of 32 was given in error by Ann Lee who reported him to the police.

William must have known Ann (Buckley) Lee in Sydney prior to his marriage to Bridget Crowley, as Bridget was related to Ann's husband Robert Lee.  After Ann's husband's death, William moved to Emerald Hill near to where Ann lived in the Immigrant's Home in Melbourne.  Her son Robert Lee was named in the Victorian Children's Directory as Robert Doig/Lee. In 1865 William was a blacksmith, lately employed in 1863 at Langland's Foundry in Melbourne.

At the time of his death his age was listed as 43.  He had been in Victoria for 13 years. His grave is unmarked.

MARRIAGE to Bridget Crowley: Witness was Catherine Kallagher, who signed her name 'X.'  William listed his age as 25 and as a Presbyterian.  Both were literate.

Notes for Janet Munro

In 1851 Janet was a book folder living with her parents at 15 Mitchell Street, Blythswood, Barony, Lanark.  Husband William was not in the household.  At home were her two children, a "sister" Christina Doig (born 1837/8 in Barony), book folder, a "nephew" George Doig* (born 1833/4 in Abbey, Paisley, Renfrew), iron molder, and two lodgers.

      * A George Doig arrived in Victoria, Australia in June 1854 on the "Glen Roy."

Notes for Bridget Crowley

Bridget arrived in Port Jackson, Victoria on 27 Dec 1852 on the "Wilson Kennedy." Bridget was taken from the viaduct in Geelong suffering from a massive heart attack on 23 May 1862.  She died shortly after in Geelong Hospital of heart failure and buried 24 May 1862 in Geelong Eastern Cemetery, grave 114504; no family was present. There is no headstone.

Notes for Ann Mahoney Buckley

After the death of husband Robert Lee in 1854, Ann and son Robert were admitted to the Immigrant's Home in Melbourne.

After the death of William Doig in 1866, Ann and children Alfred, George, and William were inmates of the Immigrant's Home.  They may have also been deserted as his son William was born in the Home the year before.  Ann's son Robert Lee was left abandoned to wander the streets and survive as best he could.

After the death of her husband John Brooke in 1879, Ann returned to live at 26 Little Raglan Street, Emerald Hill where she was a dressmaker.  Son William had run away, but the authorities released him from the Immigrant's home to live with her.  William and his half-brother Alfred left the following year for NSW.  Ann was left alone, three times a widow, to die four years later in 1884 in Melbourne.

William was born at the Immigrant Home, Princes Bridge, Mt. Royal, Melbourne. He was baptized a Roman Catholic.

After his father's death in 1866 he lived with his mother and her new Husband John Brook in Glenowan where he attended school from 1876.  (His schoolteacher had warned the police of the Ned Kelly siege in 1880.)  He also worked at the Clyde Engineering Works.  After his stepfather's death he left Glenowan at age 14 to return to Emerald Hill.  There he was found wandering the streets neglected, poorly clad, wearing dirty and useless clothing.  The authorities placed him once again in the Immigrant's Home in Melbourne on 15 Nov 1879.  His sentence of 16 months was remitted, and he was released on 27 Nov 1879 to the care of his mother, Ann, to live in at 26 Little Raglan Street, Emerald Hill.

William and his half-brother Alfred left in 1880 for NSW.  After many days hunting, prospecting, and living under the stars they rented a house a house near Central Railway Station in Sydney.  This house later caught fire and the boys lost most of their possessions including a family crest.  During this time William trained as a boilermaker and furnaceman for the Dept. of Railways, later becoming an engine driver.  After serving his apprenticeship, he moved to the Crookwell area where he mined for gold.  In the Perthville area he fell in love with Jessy Pryor, a Catholic girl.  He became baptized a Catholic, but religious differences ended their courtship.

William was one of the first employees of Hudson Brothers in the New Glasgow district of Hill End where he was a steam-engine driver, fitter, and blacksmith.  He drove the first steam tractor from Clyde to Grenfell.  The newlyweds lived on Onslow Steet, Granville, NSW.  William was active locally, playing cricket for Granville and joining the Masonic Lodge, where he became a Master in Mar 1902.

The family migrated to South Africa in 1902 to join Maria's sister Emily Fox who married to William Howley.  The Howley's had migrated two years earlier.  The family settled in Johannesburg where William worked at the reef mines.  Their two children attended the Anglican Collegiate School of St. Angelas, Braamfontein.  Maria became increasingly ill, and the family returned to the drier climate of Australia in 1905.

After Maria died in 1908 Harold went to live with the Jones brothers in Grenfell, and Gladys stayed for awhile with her aunt Georgina Howard in Dubbo.

In 1910 William lived at 18 Scouller Street, Marrickville.  In 1915 he lived with the Lewis family on Louisa Road, Balmain where he was employed by the Balmain Municipal Council as a blacksmith and boilermaker.  He moved to Rose Street, Balmain.  He became affiliated with Masonic Lodge Waratah 166 in Balmain on 25 July 1917.  Shortly after the war he purchased property at 28 Gipps Street, Balmain which remained the Doig home for many years.  He was well liked and know as Will.  The children loved to follow him as he drove the steam roller about the town.  He was once struck by another Council vehicle and spent some days in the Balmain Hospital where friends and relatives brought dinner each evening.  He had an outgoing personality and genuine concern for people.  On retirement he moved to 7 Collins Street, Narrabeen, NSW.

William remarried at age 79 to his first love Jessy Josepha (Pryor) Fitzpatrick on 19 Oct 1945 at the Methodist church in Dee Why, NSW.  Jessy was born in 1871/2 in Perthville, NSW, the daughter of John Alfred Pryor and Honora Regan.

William died 10 July 1946 at his home in Narrabeen of a cerebral hemorrhage. He was buried with his daughter Gladys in the Anglican Section at the Field of Mars Cemetery, Ryde, NSW (grave C625).  His life was a tribute to overcoming the adversity of a troubled childhood and loss of his family.  His epitaph reads, 'To live in thoughts we leave behind is not to die.'
