The family sailed to Australia on the "Ann of Dundee" in June 1854, arriving in Melbourne on Christmas Eve (or Jan 1855); with Thomas were his wife Margaret and children James, William, and Margaret. For two years they lived at Cambellfield until attracted to the Evens Diggings around Beechworth. They continued to the Indigo gold fields where Thomas worked a claim; his sons worked a dairy supplying milk and butter to the miners. The mining life did not appeal to Thomas, and he purchased 100 acres on Horseshoe Creek, Oxley, a home established in May 1860. Farming and diary brought its rewards, and the property was extended to include 'Bynong' and other valuable properties along the Owens River and Kings River.
