While still young he went to live with an uncle who farmed Gairloch, eight miles from Kirriemuir. He was educated at Webster's Seminary in Kirriemuir.

When of working age James served as a grocer's apprentice in Blairgowrie. He later was appointed manager of the Cooperative Society of Coupar-Angus, a grocer's co-op, and two years later he became first assistant to the high class grocery establishment of Messrs Scott, Perth.

James moved to Arbroath in about 1867 and became an assistant to Mr. Mill who ran a grocery in Guthrie Port at the corner of Reform Street. After Mr. Mill's death he went into business alone at 67 Guthrie Port. In 1874 his residence was at 62 Unia Street, Arbroath.
