      In 1851 Ann was a widow living at 157 Scouringburn, Liff & Benvie, Dundee; with her were William, James, Catharine, Peter and Jannet, and two lodgers John Taylor (brother?) and Ann Fenton (Ann McKay who married John Doig?).

     

      Ann's death certificate reports she died on 8 Apr 1877, and it was witnessed by her granddaughter Annie Watt of 152 Killtown, Dundee. An extract of her Will reads: Ann Taylor or Doig, 20 June 1877 - Confirmation of Ann Taylor or Doig, Dundee, widow of William Doig, sometime Wright, Tealing, afterwards Coal Dealer, Scouringburn, Dundee, who died 7 April 1877, at Dundee, testate, granted at Dundee, to Alexander Smith, Joiner, Dundee, and John Rattray, House Factor There, Executors nominated in Will or Deed, dated 15 Sept 1865, and recorded in Court Books of Commissariot of Forfar, 2 June 1877. Value of Estate, £175. 15s. 3d.

"The Scotsman" 6 Aug 1862: Perth - Case of Stabbing - On Monday, a short time previous to the depature of the train for Dundee at 4:10 P.M., a man named Peter Doig, by trade a flesher, while on the railway platform, stabbed his companion, Andrew Wilson, a carter and labourer, in the left breast with a large pocket knife. The blood flowed freely, yet as the knife did not come in contact with a vital part, Wilson was able to walk away from the station. The assault arose from a quarrel about the share each had to bear of drinking expenses in Perth on Monday morning. Doig was taken into custody, and brought yesterday morning before the presiding Magistrate at the Police Court. Baillie Farney remitted the case to the Sheriff.

"Death by Drowning - On Tuesday the 15th instant, at 3:30 p.m., as the brig Halcyon, from Hobart Town, was beating up Corso Bay, one of the crew, named William Doig, fell overboard off the anchor stock, and was drowned. He was a native of Scotland, and about 30 years of age. - Geelong Advertiser." [The Courier, Hobart, Tasmania, Friday July 25 1856, page 2.]

Notes for John Doig

      In 1841 John was an agricultural laborer on the farm of John Fairweather at Fintard, Tealing.

     

      John went to sea in 1842 as an apprentice seaman; he registered in the Merchant Service 26 Jan 1849 in Dundee, Ticket No. 212,820. He was listed as living in Dundee and literate.  John was 5'4' tall, had dark chestnut hair, a darkish complexion, and gray-hazel eyes; he had no tatoos.  He registered again as a seaman in the Merchant Service on 24 Oct 1851 in London, Ticket No. 472,713. He then reported he went to sea in 1845 and served in the Foreign Service. On 27 Nov 1854 John Doig, age 26, was a mate on the "James Gibson," arriving at NSW, Australia from Chathan Islands.

     

      John probably died abroad soon after the birth of his son William. The 1861 census lists Margaret as a "seaman's wife" indicating he was thought to be alive at that time. Margaret was thereafter alone with no children besides William. There is no death record for John in Scotland. Margaret's death record indicates she was "married" in 1894, suggesting she never knew what happened to John.

In 1871 she was a lodging house keeper at 53 Ann Street, Dundee with son William and lodgers. In 1881 she lived at 24 Dalfield Walk, Dundee with son William and 2 boarders. In 1891 Margaret D. Blair was a boarding house keeper at 27 South George Street, Dundee with granddaughter Maggie Doig (3 America) and 2 boarders.

     

      An extract of Margaret's testament reads: Margaret Blair or Doig, sometime of Balgray, Tealing, afterwards at Balkello, Forfarshire, who died 27 August 1894 at Balkello aforesaid, intestate.       In 1881 William was a grocer living with his mother in Dundee.  He came to the U.S. in 1882.  William became a naturalized citizen of the United States on 1 Nov 1884.

     

      William and Nellie returned to Scotland about 1889 where Nellie M. was born. In 1891 William, Helen, and daughter Helen lived in St. Andrew, Dundee; daughter Maggie lived with his mother.  Son George died there of diphtheria, however the family reported that 5 children died there.

     

      In 1894 William was a grocer in Vancouver, BC, Canada. In 1900 he was a railway conductor, and the family lived at 2624 Huron St., Duluth, St. Louis Co., MN.  In 1910 William was a trucker at the N. P. Railway Docks, and the family lived at 420 7th Ave E, Duluth. In 1930 William lived on Kingston Road, Rice Lake, St. Louis Co., MN with his wife Ellen and son George M. and his wife Marie. In 1940 he and Ellen lived in Rice Lake with son George.

Deceased Name: Robert Nelson Doig

Robert Nelson Doig A memorial service for Robert Nelson Doig is to be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 1, at the United Methodist Church of Geneva, 211 Hamilton St., Geneva, Ill. Born Jan. 29, 1923, in Duluth, Minn., to Willis Nelson Neely, who preceded him in death, he died Sunday, April 18, 2010, at Delnor Hospital. Bob graduated from Parker High School in Chicago in January of 1941. After high school, he enlisted in the Air Force and honorably served his country for 4 years as a navigator in World War II. After the war, he re-enlisted into the Reserves and retired as a sergeant in 1986. Following his retirement, Bob thoroughly enjoyed traveling across the country to various World War II veteran reunions and reminiscing with his companions. He also enjoyed having "senior" coffee at McDonald's in Geneva with the boys, and just "shooting the breeze." Bob attended Northwestern University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1951. It was here, that he met Erma "Alice" Doig who worked in the business department. They were married on June 17, 1950, at Northwestern University Chapel. Bob's first and only job was for General Mills in Chicago Heights, Ill. and then in West Chicago, Ill. He was a packaging engineer for General Mills for 43 years and retired from the company in 1994. He moved to Geneva in 1963, and lived in his home for 46 years. Bob and Alice had two daughters, Diane and Amy. He was involved in the community; the Geneva Public Schools, Geneva Public Library, and was a member of the United Methodist Church for 41 years. He is survived by his daughter, Diane Doig of Spokane, Wash.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Both Alice and Amy preceded him in death in 1983 and 1998 respectively. Bob was a good man had a caring heart and warm smile. He was very analytical, organized and orderly. He loved nature, reading and genealogy. But he especially loved his wife, Alice and daughters, Diane and Amy. Memorial contributions may be made to the Geneva Public Library, 127 James St., Geneva, IL 60134.
