He married (1) on 14 Feb 1778 in Forfar, Angus, Scotland Margaret (Smith) Doig, born abt 1757 Of Rescobie, Angus, Scotland; (2) on 23 Nov 1805 in Forfar, Angus, Scotland Elizabeth (Milne) Doig, born abt 1761 Of Forfar, Angus, Scotland.

Notes for Thomas Doig

[He may be the Thomas christened 30 Jan 1745 at Aberlemno, son of Andrew Doig, burgess of Brechin, and May Anderson; or born in Easter Balloch and christened 23 Feb 1749 in Kirriemuir, son of Robert Doig; or christened 5 Apr 1750 in Liff, son of James Doig; or christened 12 Aug 1753 in Dundee, son of James Doeig and Ann Alloa. It has also been suggested that he was the son of brewer in Glamis James Doig (1723-1778), but he is not mentioned in James' will.]

Thomas was a workman in Forfar Burgh and later a brewer.

[It is curious that Thomas and Margaret with 10 offspring had no children named after them. It is possible that Thomas had been previously married and already used these names. The late marriage to Elizabeth Milne is based on approx. age, location, occupation, timing, and Elizabeth' first husband Alexander Smith may have been a brother to Thomas' first wife Margaret Smith.]

MARRIAGE to Margaret Smith: Both were listed from Forfar.

MARRIAGE to Elizabeth Milne: Both were listed from Forfar, Thomas a laborer and Elizabeth the relict of Alexander Smith, shoemaker.

Notes for Elizabeth Milne

Elizabeth was previously married to Alexander Smith, shoemaker in Forfar, on 25 may 1782 in Forfar. They had sons James Smith, born 20 May 1783 in Forfar, and Alexander Smith, born 12 Oct 1784 in Forfar.

Notes for James Doig

The IGI shows James born 2 Aug 1786 and christened 6 Aug 1786 in Forfar, but in the original OPR he appears to have been born and christened on 2 Aug 1786 in Forfar. The following link is based on the family Bible of John Doig and Hamilton Johnson recording his father as James Doig born 30 July 1786 in Glamis. Glamis is the neighboring parish to Forfar, and the timing is close, as the christening record is done after the birth. Also there are no other possible recorded parents for this James, although his birth may be unrecorded or lost.

James sired two illegitimate children by Jean (Jane) Ramsay. There is probably an interesting love story here as they had the children about ten years apart, the city boy from Forfar and the country girl, a farm outworker in Glamis. James may have left the area and returned after an absence of 10 years, perhaps to leave again. In about 1818 James was a mercantile clerk in Forfar.

Notes for Jean Ramsay

Although not certain, Jean was christened 10 Dec 1790 in Glamis, the lawful daughter of William Ramsay. Another recorded christening for a Jean Ramsay was 10 July 1784 in Glamis, the daughter of John Ramsay.

Children of James Doig and Jean Ramsay were as follows:

+ 12 i John3 Doig, born 1807 in Glamis, Angus, Scotland; christened 31 May 1807 in Glamis, Angus, Scotland; died Apr 1880/80 in Holborn, London, England. He married (1) Isabella (Sidey) Doig; (2) Hamilton (Johnson) Doig.

+ 13 ii Stewart3 Doig, born 1815/19 in Glamis, Angus, Scotland; died 25 Jul 1875 in 18 Prior Road, Forfar, Angus, Scotland. He married Ann (Liddell) Doig.

8. Alexander2 Doig (Thomas1), born 27 Dec 1793 in Forfar, Angus, Scotland; christened 29 Dec 1793 in Forfar, Angus, Scotland; died 22 Jul 1860 in Westmuir, Kirriemuir, Angus, Scotland; buried in Kirriemuir, Angus, Scotland. He married Elizabeth (Lundie) Doig, born 1785/91 in Angus, Scotland; died 1841/51 in Scotland.

Notes for Alexander Doig

The following link to Betsy Lundie is uncertain and based on approximate age, location, and a child named David, as were his oldest brother and grandfather. Since son David appears in the 1841 census on his own as an agricultural laborer, it is possible that either his parents were not married or they died young.

In 1841 Elisabeth lived at Westmuir, Kirriemuir, with Ann, and Alexander was not with her. In 1851 Alexander was a 'widower' and agricultural laborer living at the Landward Part of Westmuir with his daughter Ann and her illegitimate daughter, Jean Aird.

Witness to Alexander's death certificate was his brother William.

Children of Alexander Doig and Elizabeth Lundie were as follows:

+ 14 i Ann3 Doig, born 1821 in Kirriemuir, Angus, Scotland; died 27 Oct 1900 in 71 Jessie Street, Blairgowrie, Perth, Scotland. She married (1) William Aird; (2) David Duncan; (3) unknown.

9. William2 Doig (Thomas1), born 30 Aug 1795 in Forfar, Angus, Scotland; christened 30 Nov 1795 in Forfar, Angus, Scotland; died 25 Oct 1876 in 2 Nursery Feus, Forfar, Angus, Scotland. He married on 4 Apr 1836 in Airlie, Angus, Scotland Elizabeth (Milne) Doig, born 10 Oct 1818 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland; christened 19 Oct 1818 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland; died 1887 in Forfar, Angus, Scotland, daughter of Alexander Milne and Ann (Adam) Milne.

Notes for William Doig

William joined the72nd Regiment of Foot, British Army, on 13 Oct 1813. After two years as a private he volunteered to change to the 46th Regiment of Foot on 30 Aug 1816. He was promoted to corporal on 6 Dec 1822, being reduced to private on 2 Dec 1823. William was promoted again to corporal on 30 May 1829. He served in the East Indies from 17 Dec 1817 until 25 Aug 1833, being present at the capture of Kittoor. William served a total of 27 years and 347 days, being discharged on 29 July 1834.

William's discharge read: 'Structural disease of lungs, occasioned by frequent attacks of acute catarrh since his return home, and has had frequent paroxysms of ague for several years, whereby health is now much impaired, rendering him unable to perform the ordinary duties of a soldier efficiently. Has been twelve times in hospital since 1831, and I am of opinion that he will not be permanently benefited by medical treatments. Disability caused by the service, and conduct whilst in hospital has been orderly. R Smith, Asst. Surgeon, 46th Regiment.' The discharge further confirms that William's condition was not caused by his own neglect or intemperance, and that his conduct had been very good. In 1834 William was described as 5' 9' tall, brown hair, brown complexion, blue eyes, and by trade a shoemaker.

In 1841 William was a linen handloom weaver living at Southmuir, Kirriemuir. In 1861 William was an Army Chelsea Pensioner living on Dundee Turnpike Road - East, Kirriemuir with his wife Betty and children Isabella, David, and Edward.

Notes for John Doig

The Glamis parish record coded John's christening with an 'N' indicating 'natural' or illegitimate.

The link to illegitimate daughter Isabella is based on age, location, and having left Scotland for England about the time of her birth. Isabella reported her father as John Doig, ploughman, deceased by her wedding in 1860.

In 1846 and 1851 John was a baker at 68 Fetter Lane, Holborn, London. In 1851 all the children were at home plus a Kate M'Honey, a widow, born 1832/3 in Ireland, and William Fraser, a lodger, born 1839/40 in London. In 1861 he was a baker still residing at 68 Fetter Lane with his wife Hamilton, 7 children, and a servant. In 1871 John lived at 74 Red Lion, Holborn, London with his wife Hamilton and children Jean, Ann, Abraham, and lodgers. By 1874 John was a baker at 74 Red Lion Street, Holborn.

An article by J. R. Curry in The Baker's Record of 30 July 1931 entitled 'Baker and Miller A Hundred Years Ago,' reports: 'John Doig was a master baker who traded in Fetter-Lane. He came to London from Glamis, Forfarshire, the place of his birth, and took a situation as a Scotch forehand. In a few years he was able to start in business for himself in Fetter-Lane, becoming a near neighbour of W. Dwarber. Like Mr. Dwarber he became a freeman of the city. I have not the minutes of the Protection Society to find out if he had a hand with friend Dwarber in the founding of the society, which was undoubtedly planned in Fetter-Lane, and the first meeting arranged for."

John's wife Hamilton was executrix named in his will (P.R. 791).
