1. David 1 Doig, born 1678/80 Of Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland; died 1784 in Maybole, Ayr, Scotland (longest lived male Doig at 104). He married Ann Campbell, born abt 1714 in Scotland.Notes for David Doig He may be the David christened 18 Aug 1678 in Canongate, Edinburgh, son of Andrew Doig and Margaret Watson. His daughter Christian was born in Edinburgh. See file DAVE1681 at http://www.doig.net/DAVE1681.htm.
In 1740 David was the schoolmaster in Maybole, Ayr, Scotland. In 1747 £40 was paid for two years' salary to David Doig, Schoolmaster. He was again appointed schoolmaster on 10 June 1749. In 1756 he was Master of the Grammar School. On 11 Oct 1756 he was admitted as a Councillor in Maybole. David Doig was schoolmaster to Robert Burns and his brother Gilbert, when they lived in Maybole. [Note: Robert Burns visited Stirling on 27 August 1787 when he had dinner at the Golden Lion Hotel with Lieutenant Forrester of the Castle garrison, Dr. David Doig of the Grammar School and Christopher Bell, a singing teacher. He later described Dr. David Doig as 'a queerish figure, and something of a pedant.' Was there a relation between the two David Doigs? See file ROBX1713 at http://www.doig.net/ROBX1713.html.]
'Died lately at Maybole, upwards of a hundred years of age, Mr. David Doig, late master of the Grammar school of that place.' (Notice in 'The Edinburgh Advertiser,' 24 Sept 1784). David died at age 104, which places his birth about 1679. Caledonian Mercury - Friday 24 September 1784: Extract of a letter from Maybole, Sept. 11. 'This day, died here, upwards or a hundred years of age, Mr David Doig, late master of the Grammar School of this place. His great learning, and excellent method of teaching, made him, for many years, a blessing to society. His uniform integrity, and simplicity of manners, gained him the esteem of all his acquaintances. He was a warm friend, a cheerful companion, an affectionate father and husband. His habitual temperance was rewarded with uninterrupted health. and the use of his mental powers, almost to the last. His death was occasioned by a fall in his garden.'
'The Rev. Wright describes Maybole as situated on a ridge of high ground with a fine south exposure and amply supplied with excellent water from many springs and wells. He ascribes the excellent health of the eighteenth century townsfolk to the situation and good water supplies and mentions that Mr. David Doig, schoolmaster in the town and a woman also within the burgh both died in the 1780s aged 104 and 105 years respectively. He also records that in 1790 there were ten persons living within the town whose combined ages exceeded 900 years, so Maybole must have been a very healthy place and noted for the longevity of its townsfolk in those days. The population of the Parish had increased to about 3,000 by 1792 from the total of 2,058 recorded by Dr. Webster in 1755, quite a large increase in forty years.' Notes for Christian DoigThe birth record reads: "To Mr. David Doig, Schoolmaster, and Ann Campbell, ADN [a daughter named]: Christian, W [witnesses]: James Gibb schollmr., and Andrew Martin, bookseller, born this day." Confirming Christian's marriage to John Ferguson, she was witness to the Petition of Miss Peggy Fergusson in 1779 and testified: Christian Doig, spouse to John Duncan schoolmaster in Maybole, aged 30 years and upwards, depones, that she was present when Mr. Doig her father received a letter forbidding the proclamation between the pursuer and defender. JOHN DUNCAN, probably son of John 178g D., weaver, Kilmarnock; educated at Univ. of Glasgow; became rector of the Grammar School of Kilmarnock; licen. by Presb. of Irvine llth April 1787; pres. by Archibald, Earl of Eglinton, 28th Dec. 1787; when sent to preach by the Presb. he was stopped by a mob and turned back 4th May 1788. The case subsequently was referred to the Assembly and settlement was appointed by the Commission, and he was ord. at Irvine 28th Aug. 1789. He died 31st Jan. 1819, aged 70. He marr. (1) Christian Dow [Doig], who died 26th Feb. 1799: (2) 23rd Dec. 1799, Helen Hart, who died 28th May 1805, and had issue Catherine, born 15th Feb. 1801; Jane, born 2nd Feb. 1805: (3) 15th Nov. 1808, Margaret Logan, Irvine. [M Kay s Hist, of Kilmarnock, 159 ; Scots Mag., li.; Report on Church Patronage.] History of the county of Ayr, Volume 1, By James Paterson, 1847, p. 224-226: Parish of Ardrossan - Ecclesiastical History - Ardrossan, like many other parishes, was thrown into considerable excitement by the operation of the law of patronage, towards the close of last century. The following memorandum of occurrences during the vacancy subsequent to the death of the Rev. Mr Dow, July 20, 1787, is recorded in the session book:-" After several fruitless applications to the Earl of Eglinton in favour of Mr James Stevens, who had been some few months assistant to Mr Dow, it was reported to the parish for certain that a presentation had been given to one Mr John Duncan, schoolmaster at Kilmarnock, and a preacher. Against him some remonstrances were given in to the Presbytery in March [1788]. The Presbytery appointed the Rev. Mr Duncan to preach at Ardrossan, May 4. When this day came, and it was known that he had arrived at Stevenston with three coaches, six horsemen, and sixteen or eighteen clubmen, with a smith and great forehammers, to break the kirk doors, supposed to be shut, there was a running together of some women and boys, on design, as was judged, to oppose them, but no men in the parish of any consequence among them. Between 11 and 12, Duncan and his people arrived at the foot of Finlay's brass, and being informed by some gentlemen that a mob was got up in the village, he thought it proper to sheer off with his gang to Irvine, where, after some time spent in carousing, they set out for Kilmarnock, where they continued the day at a second sederunt [a prolonged sitting], as they had done at Irvine. By appointment of the Presbytery of Irvine, Aug. 5, '88, Mr Brisbane was appointed to preach and intimate a call to Mr Duncan's settlement; and Messrs Maxwell, Pollock, and Oughterson to meet at Ardrossan kirk to moderate a call for said presentee-Maxwell to preach. The call was served." "Aug. 28.-Messrs Pollock and Oughterson arrived at the Turk's Head, Saltcoats, and were advertised that the kirk was open, and everything quiet. However, some idle women and children gathering about the door where they were, and giving some cheers or hurras, they thought proper to sheer off-the same idle gang following and harming them half way to Stevenston, but without any violence. After several to's and fro's before presbytery and synod, the presentee, by sentence of commission of General Assembly, Aug. 26,1789, was appointed to be ordained minister of Ardrossan, on or before the 1st September. The presbytery, at their next meeting, appoint, ordain, at Irvine, Aug. 27, Mr Graham of Comrie to serve the edict for that purpose; but Mr Graham did not come, so no edict was served; however, the ordination was performed in Irvine kirk, August 27, when Mr Miller from Kilmaurs preached and presided." "Thursday, Sept. 17.-When said Duncan appointed this day for entering on his ministry-hourly approaching-but did not come." "Sabbath, Sept. 20,1789.-This day Mr Duncan having appointed to preach here, came as far as Stevenston; but fearing an uproar among the people, he stopped and preached there in the afternoon; but Bailie Ralston advanced as far as the kirk. No harm done." "May 4.-A visitation appointed by presbytery." "May 13.-By said appointment at Saltcoats, Messrs Richmond, Graham, Miller, and Rowan, their clerk, joined by Mr Woodrow and Duncan, with Grange, Hudderhurst, and Constable Crafurd from Kilwinning, came to Saltcoats, where they were met at Mr Robert Campbell's close, innkeeper, by a great mob of women and youngsters in women's clothing; and judging it not safe to go to the kirk in such Company and circumstances, they agreed to go to the schoolhouse, and marched along with the mob, without molestation They came to merchant Brown's house, being on the confines of the parish of Ardrossan, where the mob began the attack most furiously. However, they made good their way, at least most of them, to the schoolhouse, among showers of dirt and stones from all quarters." In this way was the settlement of Mr Duncan ultimately effected.

It is presumed that David was previously married before Jean Hutchison by his age and the appearance of two older Doig girls in the area. Son David was illegitimate.
David was the schoolmaster and postmaster in Maybole, Ayrshire, Scotland. He was appointed postmaster on 13 Aug 1792. At that time he was listed as the son of the deceased David Doig, schoolmaster of Maybole.

Notes for Jean (Jane) Hutchison She may be the Jean Hutchson born at Ashyard and christened 10 Oct 1757, daughter of Hugh Hutchson [Mother not named]. Uncertain if this is the same Jean of i her father is Hugh Hutchison. Her first daughter was born by 1791 and was named Janet Smith Doig after her mother Janet Smith. However her mother did not marry Hugh Hutchison until 1794, suggesting she was illegitimate. That Hugh was her father is indicated by him bequeathing his estate to her eldest son Hugh Doig, or it was agreed as part of the contract of marriage of her mother to Hugh Hutchison. It appears she and her mother lived together at the timeof thier deaths in 1822. The burial record reads: Nov 27 Mrs Doig Main Street, aged.

9. John 3 Doig (David2, David1), born 24 Jun 1792 in Maybole, Ayr, Scotland; died aft 1865 in Peru. He married (1) abt 1824 in Peru Mercedes Astigarraga, born abt 1804 in Peru; (2) Not married Maria de los Dolores Baraona-Rioja, born abt 1802 in Lambayeque, Peru, daughter of José (Josef) Antonio de Barahona y Bermeo and Maria del Carmen Rioja-Albear.Notes for John Doig 1817, July 9 - Extracted Processes, National Archives of Scotland, CS32/15/47 Decreet in absence, David Stewart, junior, WS, as factor on the estates of the deceased Hugh Doig Hutchison v John Doig. John appears to have left home before his father's death in 1819. He was a weapons merchant. He arrived in Carabobo, Venezuela in 1820, then moving on to Columbia. He soon moved to Lambayeque, Peru where he lived until his death. One family document mentions: 'John Doig el Corsario y su hermano William que se va a Chile' which translates 'John Doig the Privateer and his brother William who goes away to Chile.' The story goes that John served the Peruvian Navy in their bid for freedom from Spain, and he commanded a privately owned warship that preyed on the commercial shipping or warships of Spain. See baptism document of son Juan Patricio Doig-Barona for John's signature. ------------------------------------------- 'The Lost Treasure of the El Pensamiento,' by Jim Gilchrist in 'The Scotsman' dated 24 Dec 2003. The story starts with a ghost ship, a vessel which eludes the usual shipping registers, but which may have slipped into the port of Leith on Christmas Eve, 1803 ... Or it may have been 1802 ... Or not at all. Little is certain in the story of the El Pensamiento, which is alleged to have docked at Leith two centuries ago, low in the water with an improbably vast fortune in Inca treasure, pillaged from a cave in the mountains of what is now Ecuador. It is a mystery which reaches through time and across the world, from the slaughter visited on the Incas by the conquistadores in the 1530s to Napoleonic Europe, from the mountain wilderness of the Altiplano to the Edinburgh banking establishment, from a murdered Inca emperor to an exiled Bourbon prince. It is tempting to imagine the vessel entering harbour rather like the sinister Black Pearl in Pirates of the Caribbean. And in truth, our vessel may seem of little more substance than that movie's ship of phantoms. However, once it tied up, if it tied up, at Leith, an impossible fortune in gold and silver bullion and precious stones - £460 million worth, the story goes - is said to have been transported, in 90 wicker baskets, to the Royal Bank of Scotland and deposited there by a Sir Francis Mollison or Mollinson. The treasure had been dispatched from Lambayeque, Peru, by a Spanish corregidor or colonial official, Antonio Pástor y Marin de Segura, Marques de Llosa. The vessel was jointly commanded by an American, John Fanning, and a Scot, John Doig or Doigg. You're unlikely to find any of the above documented in Scottish harbour records or banking ledgers, although the names de Segura, Fanning and Doig ring true. Fast-forward some 160 years, however, and something very strange - and very much documented - starts to happen. In October, 1965, the Royal Bank of Scotland received the first of a deluge of claims on the 'treasure', on behalf of members of the Pástor family, descendents of de Segura, under the terms of what they claimed to be a fifth-generation will, left by the Marques, who died in 1804, and his second wife, Narcisa Martinez de Tejada y Oraye. Bewildered bankers found themselves dealing with solicitors, with South American banks and with the Grand Lodge of Scotland (enquiring on behalf of its Masonic counterpart in Peru), while the Peruvian consul in Glasgow visited the Royal Bank's head office at St Andrews Square. There was an enquiry from the Procurator Fiscal for Edinburgh, concerning an action being raised by a Señora de Caceres of Lima, Peru, claiming '598 large merchant bags which were dispatched from Lima, Peru, in 1803 by the ship El Pensamiento under Captains J Fanning and J Doigg to the Royal Bank of Scotland and delivery entrusted to Castillo la Rosa'. A Royal Bank executive, Robert Forbes, now long retired, went through all the bank's strongrooms in Edinburgh and Glasgow. He found nothing. In a report in 1966, Forbes, who was shown a copy of the Pástor testament - but, noticeably, no receipt - by one enquiring diplomat wrote: 'Our records throw no light on the story. Safe custody books only go back to 1860 and we are, therefore, unable to determine whether or not any packages were ever deposited with us by the parties concerned and subsequently uplifted.' Meanwhile, half a world away, newspapers carried headlines about 'un fabuloso tesoro' which was going to make certain families very rich indeed. Ecuador's Ultimas Noticias, for instance, reported how Señora Violeta Aguilar de Caceres had told the Peruvian Press that she possessed 'documents of guarantee of the Bank of Scotland that confirm deposits valued at £460 million sterling'. Confusion reigns, but nobody got rich. The story has entered into Royal Bank folklore, and the late James Gilhooley, a design engineer turned historian and freelance writer, undertook some serious research and in 1986 wrote an article about the treasure for the Royal Bank of Scotland Review. First, though, that £460 million, which today's values would represent a mind-boggling £26.3 billion-plus. 'There's no way de Segura accumulated this sort of wealth unless he discovered Eldorado, Atlantis, The Valley of the Kings, etc, all on his own,' observes Iain Harrison of the Royal Bank's group communications department. However, Gilhooley reckoned there had been a misconstruing of the will's reference to French livres. The exchange rate at that time, he wrote, was 24 livres to the pound, making the treasure's worth nearer £20 million - still a tidy £1.1 billion by today's values. Gilhooley, who was almost certainly planning a book about the affair but died two years ago, postulated an intriguing sequence of conspiracies. Pointing to Spanish detailed records of de Segura, he argued that the hostilities between Britain and France and Spain had halted the flow of treasure ships from South America to Spain, with a five-year bottleneck of riches awaiting shipment. In 1802, the Treaty of Amiens gave a short-lived breathing space which would allow such traffic, while at the same time Napoleon demanded that Spain comply with earlier treaties and pay France a hefty 'war contribution' which was in effect protection money. The envoy chosen for this was one Comte Louis Philippe de Ségur, who may well have shared a Basque country background as well as an aristocratic family name with de Segura. Spain looked to the Americas, and very possibly to de Segura, for the necessary bullion. Gilhooley believed that the corregidor was in a position to 'hijack' a shipment of treasure, at least partly for himself, leaving it to a fifth generation either because he had fallen out with his immediate family or perhaps putting it beyond any retribution, Napoleonic or otherwise. The Basques and the Scots both maintained a significant mercantile presence in the Caribbean and the Royal Bank was well known in the Atlantic trading world. However, even if the treasure had set sail from Peru on a ship named El Pensamiento, it would have to be unloaded and carted across the pre-canal Isthmus of Panama and transferred to a different vessel. Also, because of the hostilities, ships sailing from Spanish colonies may well have given false information on their clearance papers and manifests, or sailed under assumed names and flags. The Doigs and Fannings were both well-known seafaring dynasties, the Fannings from Stonington, Connecticut (one of them sailed with the Scots-born American naval hero John Paul Jones), while the Doigs were well-known in the Scottish north-east mercantile (and smuggling) town of Montrose. Gilhooley identified a John Doig from there who was active in the Caribbean, while enquiries by The Scotsman revealed another branch of the family, from Ayrshire, to be much concerned with Peru - including a John Doig who was a noted privateer, based in Lambayeque, but whose birth in 1792 makes him too young to figure in our tale. The Francis Mollison or Mollinson who was supposed to deposit the treasure in Edinburgh was, Gilhooley claimed, a pseudonym for Comte Francois Mollien, a leading French banker who was a member of the same masonic lodge in Paris as the de Segur family (and John Paul Jones). But if the treasure never reached the Edinburgh bank, where did it go? Gilhooley points to a sudden escalation in the fortunes of the ousted French Bourbon dynasty. For in residence at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, at the beginning of the 19th century, was one Charles Philippe, Compte d'Artois, who would become the last Bourbon king of France, Charles X. Seeking anything more concrete, we must look to South America - but via Dunbar and the home of Stan Hall, an Edinburgh-born engineer who became so hooked on what he regards as 'the missing pages' of South America's prehistory that he lived in Ecuador for many years. 'Treasures are made to frustrate people,' he remarks, and introduces into the story a tantalising document known as the Derrotero, a document presented to King Carlos IV of Spain by a man named Valverde before his death in 1792, which gave directions established by another, earlier Valverde, to a vast cache of Inca treasure, reputedly hidden in a cave in Ecuador's wild Llanganati region. It is said to have been dispatched there by Ruminahui, one of Atahualpa's generals, after the Inca leader had been baptised then strangled by the good Christian invaders of his country. De Segura, he says, would have used the Derrotero in obtaining his treasure. Hall, 67, is no stranger to caves: in fact he has one named after him, one of the mysterious Tayos caves to which he led a British-Ecuadorian expedition in 1976, which included as patron and member the astronaut and moonwalker Neil Armstrong. The treasure of the Llanganti he regards as a side-issue, if an intriguing one, to his real interest, the ancient civilisations of South America, but believes the treasure almost certainly exists - and that some of it may have come to Scotland. So far as its subsequent disappearance, he believes 'the defining hand' could be the eminent Scots banker Thomas Coutts, another Montrose man, who may well have known Doig, and certainly Mollien. Coutts, says Hall, became banker to George III - and was known to assist the Bourbons. Hall, as did Gilhooley and other researchers, points to a 'mysterious absence' of Leith cargo manifests for the years 1795-1805, and suggests that as Coutts is thought to have disposed of George lll's financial ledgers after the monarch's death ... well, perhaps he turned his attention to cargo manifests. In Ecuador, countless explorers have tried to find that Llanganati cave, sometimes with fatal consequences, while following copies of the Derrotero (which Hall believes to have been altered to confuse treasure-hunters), along with a map of the Llanganati region, made in 1827 by a pharmacologist, Atanasio Guzman, who himself perished in the area. That didn't stop the veteran Scottish mountain man, Hamish MacInnes, from making three trips to the Llanganati, also equipped with the Derrotero and the Guzman map. MacInnes also made fruitless enquiries about the El Pensamiento and has tried, so far without success, to trace the Spanish royal warrant which would have authorised the original expedition into the Llanganati to procure the treasure, ostensibly for Spain but also for de Segura. You won't find MacInnes's Glencoe home crammed with Inca gold - he didn't find any, but he does believe that Atahualpa's riches may well lie within the Llanganti. In his book Beyond the Ranges, he expresses his belief that the Valverde Derrotero is genuine, however, he warns that the Llanganati, high on the Altiplano and near the Equator, is unforgiving country: 'Not a place for a bucket-and-spade visit.' But what about those who believed they were the rightful inheritors of de Segura's treasure? In Quito, capital of Ecuador, an old friend of Hall's, Dr Michel Merlyn spoke last week to Cesar and Hector Pástor, the sons of Hector Plaza Salvador, who directed the family committee formed to make the claims in 1965. 'They said they didn't feel cheated or enraged at all,' recounts Merlyn. 'Most of the Pástors, the two of them included, were not disillusioned, although some were, of course. 'They described the whole affair as an experiencia simpática - an interesting and funny experience. They haven't been investigating since the 1965-1966 episode, but I'm sure they are still interested.' But the story of the lost Pástor millions won't lie down and die. Another story in El Comercio in May 1965 added a further, intriguing element by recounting how, as far back as 1686, an infamous pirate, Eduardo David, plundered the mansion of the Obaya family in Lambeyeque, stealing, among other things, 598 bags or containers of gold and silver. Then, as this article was going to press, a Peruvian woman living in Edinburgh, who had helped MacInnes translate the Llanganati documents, told me her version, which mentioned Doig and Fanning, and a fast British ship laden with treasure, but had one of the partners taking his third of the treasure to France - where it was used in the purchase of Louisiana. And, she claimed, the treaure was still lying in the Royal Bank: 'But the descendents of the man who put it there cannot prove they are his real descendents, because in Peru there was a fire in the registry office.' So, amid blazing documents and ricocheting conspiracy theories, the lost treasure of the El Pensamiento sails into the sunset - and seems likely to stay there, unless someone locates some vital documents, or a certain cave ... ------------------------------------------- The following article may refer to John Doig and/or his brother William: The Cocos Island Pirates: Excerpt from book 'Romance of the Sea,' (National Geographic Society, Washington: 1981) chapter 'Fortunes from the Spaniards,' page 57-58: The story of the Cocos Island treasure dump begins about the year 1818 when a British pirate, Bennet Graham, or Benito Bonita as he preferred to call himself, brought the loot from Peruvian churches and merchant ships to be buried on Cocos Island until he could collect it later. It is fairly certain that more wealth was added to this dump later. With Bonita was William Thompson, who turned up at Cocos Island again in 1824. The Spaniards had managed to get away much of their treasure from Lima when Peru was in revolt against the rule of Spain. Lord Cochrane, then in command of the Chilean Navy and giving help to Peru, went to the port of Callao, to which the treasure had gone, and demanded two-thirds of the money with which to pay his men. On the scene appeared Thompson, now in command of a trading brig 'Mary Read.' He arranged to take off some of the Spanish grandees with their enormous fortune and avoid Lord Cochrane's attentions. What had happened to Bennet Graham nobody apparently knew. It may be that William Thompson knew, but, if he did, he certainly never revealed anything. As soon as the 'Mary Read,' with the escaping Spaniards and their wealth, was well clear of the port the helpful Captain Thomson killed the Spaniards and flung them overboard, then set sail for Cocos Island to bury his share of this additional loot. Unfortunately it was many years before Thompson had a chance of returning to collect his vast wealth. When he did at last manage the return voyage he took a partner with him and discovered that both the treasure of Bonita (Graham) and Thompson's own were untouched. It was too risky to take away just then and Thompson and his partner, Doig, made careful preparations for another voyage. Thompson died without ever seeing his treasure again, but in due course some years later, his partner, Doig, with his son, went out to Cocos once more, all prepared to bring home their great fortune. Unfortunately a landslide had occurred and made the recovery of the treasure a serious engineering task. They were totally unprepared for anything of that sort and had to return home to consider their plans. The elder Doig died and the son never had a chance of going out again, but he left clear directions regarding the location of the treasure hoards. Many expeditions have been made and a few coins and ornaments have been found in circumstances which certainly help to confirm the story. Most of the seekers, however, have done just as much to obliterate helpful landmarks as have the storms and natural changes through the long years which have elapsed since Thompson buried his loot. --------------------------------------------------------------- The story is also told somewhat differently with the name BOAG instead of DOIG. He is identified elsewhere as Capt. William Boag. The following version is found at http://www.detecting.org.uk/html/Treasure_of_Cocos_Island.html. The Treasure of Cocos Island350 miles west of Costa Rica lies the tiny and uninhabited Cocos Island. It is believed that a vast treasure was hidden here in 1821 by the mutinous crew of the Mary Dear (or Mary Deare, depending on source), a British ship chartered to move gold, silver and jewels from the churches of Lima, Peru to the safety of Spain. Shortly after leaving the port of Callao, the gold hungry crew of the Mary Dear murdered the six soldiers charged with guarding the treasure, seized control of ship and sailed to Cocos Island where, it is said, they hid the treasure in a cave and then set sail for Panama. Upon arriving in Panama the mutineers were arrested, most of the crew were executed, but three were spared after promising the Spanish authorities that they would assist in the recovery of the treasure.
Two of the three were taken to Cocos by a detachment of soldiers, soon after arriving, the two men escaped from their captors into the dense jungle. The soldiers, unable to locate the mutineers and believing that the two men would be unable to escape the island, returned to Panama. A year later, the two men were picked up by a passing ship and taken to Costa Rica.
One of the two passed on the location of the treasure, in the form of a map, to a man named John Keating. Keating, with the help of the third mutineer, a man named Boag, later located the treasure on the island but the crew of the ship that had taken them to Cocos demanded a share, facing a mutiny, Keating and Boag hid in the jungle until the crew gave up searching for them and sailed away.
After an unknown period, Keating was picked up from the island by a passing ship and claimed that Boag had drowned, although he would later say that he had murdered him and left his body in the cave with the treasure.
Before his death in 1882, Keating passed the Cocos secret on to three people (why he did not go back for the bulk of the treasure himself is not clear), his wife, Fred Hackett and Nicholas Fitzgerald.
Keating's widow and Fred Hackett teamed up and headed to Cocos - they found nothing. The third man, Nicholas Fitzgerald, did not go in search of the treasure but passed the map Keating had given him to Admiral Henry Palliser - who also found nothing.
It has been claimed that frequent earthquakes on the island have destroyed vital landmarks necessary to accurately interpret the clues on the map. Many have gone in search of the Cocos Treasure, even members of Jacques Cousteau's crew tried their luck with a metal detector during a visit to film the island and its reefs, but as far as we know, all who have searched for it have come back empty handed.
------------------------------------------------------- To add to the mystery, there is an excavation by Gerald Crowley in 2006 of a sunken ship off a small island near Australia. The ship is thought to be, variously spelled, the Peruvian, Peruana, or Pervano. A French Lefaucheux pistol patented in 1845 was recovered, and by X-Ray the serial number was read, less the last digit. From the French records, of the ten possible owners, four may have owned this specific pistol, one being William Doig.

Alexander Bruce Todd The Rev. Alexander Bruce Todd, arrived on the 1st of June, 1859. He had been a teacher in St. Andrews, and afterwards missionary in Jamaica. Before coming to Otago he had been labouring with much acceptance in connection with the Free Church at Cowdenbeath, in Fifeshire. He was cordially recommended by the Colonial Committee of the Free Church, and came out, as their letter ran, 'with the view of being appointed to any of the vacant stations within the bounds that may appear to the Presbytery most suitable.' At a congregational meeting held in Tokomairiro on the 14th of June, it was unanimously agreed to invite him to be their minister, and to petition the Presbytery to regard their invitation a« a true call. This was done, and Mr. Todd was inducted on Sabbath, the 7th July, 1859. Mr. Bannerman presided on the occasion, and preached on the Transfiguration of Christ, from Luke ix., 28-37. In tne Divine power whereby that transfiguration was wrought, Mr. Todd began and carried on for about ten years a ministry that was highly prized by the people and fruitful of lasting good. [Fifty years syne: a jubilee memorial of the Presbyterian Church of Otago, by James Chisholm, 1898] Obituary - Oamaru Mail, 18 Aug 1903: DEATH OF THE REV. A. B. TODD By Telegraph, Duneden, August 18. The Rev. A. B. Todd, Presbyterian minister, died this morning, aged 82 years. The Rev. Alexander Bruce Todd was born in the ancient city of St. Andrews, Scotland, on the 1st. February, 1821, and was educated at the school and college of his native town. His father was in business, and on leaving school he accepted a mercantile vocation. But there was another destiny in store for him. As a convert of William Burns in the revival of 1839, he resolved to adopt a ministerial career, and entered upon a course of .study to that end. Having devoted a year to study at Si. Andrews' University, ill-health put a temporary stop to his studies, and he went, to Jamaica, where he had charge of the Falmouth Academy for three years, and he was wont to refer to his sojourn there, as providing him with a most interesting sphere of labor. Returning to Scotland, he resumed and finished his arts curriculum at the University of Edinburgh, and thereafter attended the Theological College of the Free Church. He was licensed to preach by the Free Church Presbytery of St. Andrews in the year 1855. As a probationer he labored for a year among the miners of Cowdenbeath, Forfarshire, and for several months at Kirkoswald, Ayrshire. He was ordained to the office of the ministry in Maybole, Ayrshire, in 1858, and the same year he married Miss Train, of Dailly, the daughter of Dr Train, a representative of an old Ayrshire family. On the 1st January, 1859, Mr and Mrs Todd set sail for New Zealand, with Otago as their destination. The Mariner, the ship by which they were passengers, had on board a number of German immigrants, who came out to a German settlement in the Nelson province, and the vessel being delayed at Nelson for a month in consequence, it was not. till June, 1859, that they arrived in Dunedin. He was the fifth Presbyterian minister who arrived in the colony, being preceded by the Revs. Thos. Burns, W. Will, W. Bannerman, and Dr Stuart. Mr Todd was cordially recommended by the Colonial Committee of the Free Church. At the time of his arrival in Dunedin the members of the Tokomairiro congregation were very anxious to secure a good man, and at a meeting held in Tokomairiro on the 14th June, 1859, it was unanimously resolved to invite Mr Todd to be the minister and to petition the Presbytery to regard their invitation as a true call. This was done, and the deceased was inducted on the 7th July, 1859, the Rev. W. Bannerman presiding. He labored in the Tokomairiro charge for ten years, and zealously and faithfully carried on the work. The field of his labors was an extended one, and it is recorded that he was the first minister who preached to the miners in Gabriel's Gully. In 1869, the Rev. Mr Todd accepted a call, to St. Paul's, Oamaru. At that time churches were few and far between, and Mr Todd's ministrations extended over a large area in which successful churches have since been established. For many years he paid periodical visits to the outlying posts of his extensive charge, travelling away up the Waitaki and in other directions when the means of transit were still in the primitive stage. Thus lie added still further to the experience already gained in the south of the difficulties to be encountered by a minister of the gospel who desired to discharge to the full hit; high mission in a new and sparsely peopled land. At the time of his coming here St. Paul's Church was not as it is now. Only part of the handsome structure had been erected, and it was not until 1875 that it was completed. How Presbyterianism flourished under the guiding hand of the Rev. Mr Todd the existence of many nourishing churches to-day is witness. For a quarter of a century he laborred zealously and well, but in 1894 he intimated to the congregation his intention of retiring on the score of failing health, and at the close of the year his retirement fook effect. The reverend gentleman was, however, honored by being accorded the position of senior minister of St. Paul's; everyone knows it was a long time before the congregation came to a sufficiently unanimous mind to ensure the appointment of a successor, and so Mr Todd remained in close touch with, its affairs for many months. When, however, the severance came at last, the session on the 21st November adopted the following minute, which speaks for itself of the regard in which the retiring pastor was held:-'The Session desire to place- on record their high appreciation of the long and faithful services of their late minister, the Rev. A. B. Todd, during his lengthy pastorate of more than a quarter of a century. They also wish to recognise his valuable help during the eight months following his resignation. They express their sincere regret that failing health and advancing age. necessitate his retirement, from the charge, and hope lie may long be spared to enjoy God's best blessings with health, happiness, and prosperity spiritually and temporally during the remainder of his; days.' Some little time afterwards, the reverend gentleman, having in the meantime lost by death the life partner who had to him been in truth a loving helpmeet., resolved to take up his residence in Dunedin, and he was accorded a hearty public farewell. During his long career here Mr Todd took an active part in public projects designed to promote the welfare of the people. He was for many years actively associated with the Athenaeum, and had no small share in the work of laying the foundation of its success. He took a particularly active interest in educational matters, and served many years as a member of School Committee. His life in Duneden had not been one of leisured idleness. Though no longer a minister in active service he had found much good and acceptable work to do in visiting the sick mid sorrowing. This he continued with unremitting zeal until he could no longer get, about, and since then he carried on his self-imposed mission by means of letters designed to bring comfort and consolation. The reverend gentleman has left one daughter and four sons to mourn their loss, Miss Todd having been a. nurse to him during his illness. Of the sons the Rev. A. B. Todd is the Presbyterian minister at Geraldine; Mr William Todd is, we believe, assistant to the Rev. Mr Hewitson at Knox Church, Dunedin: Mr James Todd was for some time a, missionary in China, and afterwards was afterwards associated with the Moody Institute in America presided over by Dr Torrey, but has just returned to Dunedin ; and Mr David Todd is engaged in mercantile pursuits in Duneden. Children of Agnes Hunter Train and Rev. Alexander Bruce Todd were as follows: 61 i Rev. Alexander Bruce 62 ii William Train 5 Todd, born 1862 in Oamaru, Otago, New Zealand.63 iii James Henry 5 Todd, born 1864 in New Zealand. Notes: James worked with the Moody Institute in Amarica.64 iv David 5 Todd, born abt 1866 in New Zealand. He has lectured at several of Peru's universities and, as a visiting professor at the University of Bonn he taught Peruvian and American archaeology. His prolific professional work has been honoured with the highest award by Peru in the field of culture. He was the first Latin American to be awarded Sweden's Neubergh Medal, and has been decorated by the Peruvian government, as well as by the governments of Belgium, Austria and Sweden. He is a member of Peru's National Academy of History, an Honorary Member of the Barbier-Mueller Museum in Switzerland, a Member of the Royal Academy of History in Madrid, and the founding director of the Institute of Amazonian Archaeology. He belongs to the Scientific Committee of the Centro Studi Ricerche Ligabue, in Venice, and, together with Giancarlo Ligabue, has made 14 expeditions to the Peruvian Amazonian Andes. He is also the author of several books. On Thursday, March 5, the ambassador and his daughter met Peter Mason, chairman of the community council, who was accompanied by David and Margaret Kiltie. The five of them had breakfast before setting off on a whirlwind tour of the area. Their route took them past Burns Cottage, in Alloway, as they headed for Culzean Castle via Dunure and the Electric Brae. They were welcomed by Fiona McClelland and Gordon Nelson and given a tour of the castle, which was specially opened for them. Michael Harrison, duty manager, showed them round the Eisenhower Apartments. The next stop was Maybole via Maidens, Turnberry, Kirkoswald and Crossraguel Abbey. To be in Maybole was a 'dream come true' for the ambassador who said he had dreamt of this since childhood. Members of Maybole Historical Society had opened Maybole Castle and set up an exhibition of old photographs which the visitors enjoyed as many of the buildings would have been in existence when their ancestors were living in the town. Helen McAdam, chairman of the society, then presented them with two framed photographs of a house on Kirkoswald Road that once belonged to the Doig family. After the castle visit, they visited the old cemetery at the foot of the Kirkwynd, where they saw the tombstone of John Doig's sister Jane and others of family interest. The cemetery is situated beside the Auld College and the history of the Kennedys buried there was explained. Lunch was enjoyed in the Welltrees Inn, where Billy Torbett presented them with a DVD of the celebrations to mark the 250th anniversary of the marriage of Robert Burns' parents in Maybole. He also gave them a photograph of Welltrees Street as it was in the 19th century and one of Maybole Pipe Band. Burns Cottage was the next stop, where they were welcomed by John Manson before a viewing of the video of the origins of the cottage and a visit to the museum. Following this, the ambassador and his daughter met with Provost Winifred Sloan in her office at the County Buildings. After exchanging gifts, Provost Sloan said, 'I think it is very apt that the Professor chose to visit Maybole and South Ayrshire during the Year of the Homecoming. It was very interesting to hear about his ancestors and to see the enthusiasm with which he talked about the history of his family. 'A well respected academic historian, who has published numerous books and received many awards for his works, I feel honoured to have met Profession Kauffman-Doig.' After a short rest, the ambassador and his daughter headed to Maybole Town Hall, where they were welcomed by the sound of the bagpipes played by Scott Barrie, 12.
