Maybole Castle - 1838

1. David1 Doig, born 1679/89 in Scotland; died 1784 in Maybole, Ayr, Scotland. He married Ann (Campbell) Doig, born abt 1714 in Scotland.

Notes for David Doig

He may be the David christened 8 Dec 1677 in Forfar, son of Francis Doig and Isabel Lyon. See file DAVE1620 HERE.

In 1740 David was the schoolmaster in Maybole, Ayr, Scotland. In 1747 £40 was paid for two years' salary to David Doig, Schoolmaster. He was again appointed schoolmaster on 10 June 1749. In 1756 he was Master of the Grammar School. On 11 Oct 1756 he was admitted as a Councilor in Maybole.

"Died lately at Maybole, upwards of a hundred years of age, Mr. David Doig, late master of the Grammar school of that place." (Notice in "The Edinburgh Advertiser," 24 Sept 1784). As noted below, David died at age 104. He holds the record as the longest lived male Doig.

"The Rev. Wright describes Maybole as situated on a ridge of high ground with a fine south exposure and amply supplied with excellent water from many springs and wells. He ascribes the excellent health of the eighteenth century townsfolk to the situation and good water supplies and mentions that Mr. David Doig, schoolmaster in the town and a woman also within the burgh both died in the 1780s aged 104 and 105 years respectively. He also records that in 1790 there were ten persons living within the town whose combined ages exceeded 900 years, so Maybole must have been a very healthy place and noted for the longevity of its townsfolk in those days. The population of the Parish had increased to about 3,000 by 1792 from the total of 2,058 recorded by Dr. Webster in 1755, quite a large increase in forty years." Maybole, Carrick's Capital Facts, Fiction & Folks by James T. Gray, Alloway Publishing, Ayr. First published 1972. Chapter 5. See also Chapter 8 for salary.

Notes for Hugh Doig Esq.

Hugh Hutcheson of Southfield, testament recorded 6 Sept 1813. Original document: Page 1, Page 2, Page 3, Page 4, Page 5.

Hugh Doig of Southfield served Heir of Provision General to Hugh Hutchison of Southfield, recorded 26 June 1813 at Edinburgh (Film #0231350). Translation from the Latin: "This enquiry is called in the Court of the Vice-mayor of Edinburgh, this 30th day of May 1813, in the presence of (long list of names) signatories all Solicitors at Law. Of Doig Hutchison herein named the major party between the late Hugo Hutchison, gentleman of Southfield [Village in Dalry Parish, Ayrshire], who died in Faith and Peace without heirs of his body, and which Hugo Doig Hutchison, gentleman of Southfield designated Hugo Doig, eldest son of David Doig of the Parish of Maybole and Jean Hutchison [wife of David Doig], the legitimate and proper heir of the general properties at the word of Hugo Hutchison, given in two dispositions by him executed on 30th October 1795, and recorded in the Book of Sessions 24 May 1813, by which the said Hugo Hutchison in the event of dying without legitimate heirs of his body bequeaths lands and properties to the said Hugo Doig Hutchison and his heirs aforementioned, and that this Hugo Doig Hutchison is of legal age.

Sealed in this testimonial of which the said Enquiry between the parties in brief. Adam Roland, clerk to the Vice-Mayor at Edinburgh in the month and year of Our Lord undersigned. 26 June 1813."

Hugh appears to have taken the surname Hutchison as appears in his daughter's surname and later documents.

Notes for John Doig

John appears to have left home in 1819, after his father's death. He was a weapons merchant. He arrived in Carabobo, Venezuela in 1820, then moving on to Columbia. He soon moved to Lambayeque, Peru where he lived until his death.

One family document mentions: "John Doig el Corsario y su hermano William que se va a Chile" which translates "John Doig the Privateer and his brother William who goes away to Chile." The story goes that John served the Peruvian Navy in their bid for freedom from Spain, and he commanded a privately owned warship that preyed on the commercial shipping or warships of Spain.

See baptism document of son Juan Patricio Doig-Barona for John's signature.

"The Lost Treasure of the El Pensamiento," by Jim Gilchrist in "The Scotsman" dated 24 Dec 2003.

The story starts with a ghost ship, a vessel which eludes the usual shipping registers, but which may have slipped into the port of Leith on Christmas Eve, 1803 ... Or it may have been 1802 ... Or not at all.
