      David was named after his grandfather, David Bruce in Knowhead of Ruthven.

     

      David was a wright in Dundee.

     

      He may be the David buried 10 May 1797 in the Howff Graveyard, Dundee as there were no more children born after 1796. Or this may be his son David. Also he may have left Scotland with his family.

     

      MARRIAGE: They pledged marriage on 13 Nov 1790 in Eassie & Nevay.  David was listed from Nevay and Helen from Meigle.

Notes for Alexander Doig

      Alexander went to sea as a carpenter in 1834.  He registered in the Merchant Service 24 Mar 1845 at Dundee (certificate #132615).  He was 5'9¼" tall, with a fresh complexion, gray eyes, and dark brown hair.  He had two moles on his left cheek.  In 1839 he sailed as ship's carpenter on the Dundee whaling ship, "Advice"; on the same ship was Andrew Doig, born 1810/11 in Dundee.

     

      In 1841 Margaret and the three oldest children lived with her father John McAulay on Church Lane, Dundee.  In 1851 Alexander was a ship wright living at 31 Aimfield, Liff & Benvie, Dundee; at home were Margaret and children Mary, Catherine, Peter, Alexander, John, and William.  The family moved to Glasgow about 1851.  In 1861 the family lived at 1 Dock Street, Glasgow; at home were Margaret and children Catherine (steamloom weaver), Peter (ship carpenter), John (rivet boy), William, Helen, Agnes, and Margaret.  In 1871 they lived at 204 Kelvinhaugh Street, Glasgow; at home were Margaret and children John, William, Helen, Agnes, and Margaret.  In 1881 he was a ship carpenter in Barony, Lanark; at home were Margaret and daughters Agnes (machinist) and Margaret (machinist).

     

      Witness to Alexander's death certificate was his daughter Agnes Doig.

     

      MARRIAGE: James was listed as a carpenter and both from Dundee.

Notes for Peter Doig

      In 1841 Peter was a farm servant on Causton Farm, Newtyle. In 1845 Peter was a farm servant at Belmont and in 1846 at Auchtertyre.  He became a stoker working on the Dundee and Newtyle Railway in 1848.  In 1851 Peter was a locomotive fireman living on Belmont Street, Newtyle.  The Newtyle Railway Company ran into financial difficulties and Peter was laid off.  In 1853 he was a farm servant at South Bins, Fowlis Easter.  In 1861 he was a farm servant living at Bowhouse, Kilspindie, Perthshire.  In 1871 he was an engine driver living at 15 Main Street, Perth; at home were Alice and children William (railway engine cleaner), Stewart Shepherd (apprentice plumber), Mary Ann (Seamstress in dye work), Maria Blair (message girl), and granddaughter Helen Dunn.  The family moved to 135 Canal Crescent in about 1875, and soon after to 63 Long Causeway, a house closer to Peter's work at the goods yard.

     

      Peter's death certificate was witnessed by his son Stewart.

     

      MARRIAGE: They proclaimed marriage on 27 Jan 1844 in Newtyle, Angus, and again on 28 Jan 1844 in Kettins, Angus.  Peter was listed from Kettins and Alice from Newtyle. 

 

Notes for Alice Pirrie

      In 1881 Alice lived at 64 Long Causeway in East Church, Perth with the three youngest children; she was listed as Mrs. Doig, an outworker.  Stewart was a plumber, Mary a presser dye worker, and Maria a machinist.  Alice was also counted in the 1881 census with her daughter Jean and husband Alexander Bell and family.  In 1891 Alice had moved to 58 Long Causeway; at home were Mary Ann (dyers finisher) and Maria Blair (sewing machinist).

Article in "The Scotsman" 19 July 1875, page 4: Perth - Railway Accidents - Early on Saturday morning a man named Wm. Doig died in Perth Infirmary from injuries received near Aldbar Station on Friday afternoon, having been struck on the forehead by a bridge through which the train was passing. The blow immediately rendered him insensible, and he never recovered consciousness. Doig resided in Canal Crescent, Perth. William's father witnessed the death certificate.  He was the first member of the family to be buried in the family plot in Wellshill Cemetery, Perth..

In 1881 Mary was a presser in a dyeworks living with her mother at 64 Long Causeway, Perth.  In 1891 she was a dyers finisher living with her mother at 58 Long Causeway where she continued to live with her sister Maria until 1916.  In 1901 Mary (housekeeper) and her sister Maria (dyers machinist) resided at 58 Longcauseway, Perth with their brother Stewart's children Peter, Lillias, and Alice. After their brother Stewart and his wife passed away in 1900 the two sisters took in their orphaned children.  In 1936 she lived at 4 New Row, Perth.  Mary did not marry. Witness to Mary's death certificate was her nephew Peter Doig.

      56        vi         Maria Blair5 Doig, born 21 Jun 1858 in Fowlis Easter, Perth, Scotland; died 18 Mar 1936 in 36 Briar Road, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland.   Notes: In 1881 Maria was a machinist living with her mother at 64 Long Causeway, Perth.  In 1891 she was a sewing machinist living with her mother at 58 Long Causeway where she continued to live until 1916.  Maria and her sister Mary lived together.  By 1920 Maria lived at 23 Unity Place, Perth with niece Alice Pirrie, Peter and Lilias having left.  In 1926 she moved to 39 Caldercuilt Road, Glasgow to be with her niece Alice, who had recently take a position with the Ministry of Labour.  When Lilias married her widowed cousin Peter James Dunn in 1930, she moved to live with them at 36 Briar Road, Glasgow.  Maria did not marry.

      James was the twin of Jean Fenton Doig.

     

      In 1850 James was an engine fitter.  In 1851 he was an engine driver living at 6 Erskine Street, Montrose.  In 1853 to 1855 he was a telegraph clerk.  In 1861 and 1871 the family lived at 49 Glover Street, Perth.  In 1881 he was still an engine driver living at 20 New Row, East Church, Perth; wife Ann and children Mary, John (dyer), Charlotte, Joseph (message boy), and grandson, Robert Sinclair (born 1878/9 in Perth), were at home.  By 1891 he was a dyer's clerk in Denny where he lived with his wife and son Joseph and his family.

     

      Witness to James' death certificate was his son James Watson Doig.
