"James Rolla & Agnes L. (Wallace) Doig" By Helen Rush, Comanche County History, page 348, The Comanche County Historical Society, 1981:

James Rolla Doig and Agnes L. Wallace were married in Iowa in 1854. He was a Presbyterian minister and taught college at Washington, Iowa, and Mammoth College at Mammoth, Iowa. He died in 1881. His wife, Agnes, was ill a great deal with bronchial trouble. Her doctor recommended a dry, warmer climate, so in 1883, she and six of her eight children came to Kansas in a covered wagon and settled in Coldwater. Her children were: Ella, 24 years; Anna 22 years; Rolla, 20 years; Jenny, 13 years; and Haldane, 9 years.

They lived in the covered wagon for a time after coming to Coldwater. This was fortunate as they had to move the wagon on one occasion to escape the path of a prairie fire. They were threatened by Indian raids, rattlesnakes, they argued about the location, there was a shortage of water, and many other inconveniences plagued them as well. But there were also good times, and the excitement of it all was quite an adventure.

Ella, after teaching several years, married Grant Sutton, who taught in Coldwater at the time and later moved to eastern Kansas. Anna taught a year or so, then married George Jeffries of Wichita. Rolla became a doctor and moved to California, where another brother lived. James married Vivian Hakes and continued living in Coldwater and Protection where he was in the bank, and later in the Farmer's Co-op until his death in 1924. Jenny taught school for a few years; one year was in the Ferrin home before the schoolhouse, Ridge Summit was built. She married Grant Stephens in 1896 and continued to live near Coldwater until her death in 1913. Haldane Doig moved to California.

Agnes Doig lived with her two daughters, Ella and Jenny, during her later years. She died at Moline, Kansas, and was taken back to Iowa for burial beside her husband.

Notes: THE WESTERN STAR, 10 October 1902 Obituary of RUTH DOIG DIED. Doig - In Coldwater, Kansas, on Saturday, October 4, 1902, Ruth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Doig, aged 6 months and 9 days. Little Ruth Doig was an exceedingly bright and promising child, the pride and joy of her parents and a source of constant sunshine to all. The announcement of her death early on Saturday morning was a great shock to the entire community, coming as it did with scarcely any warning. Ruth had been in rather poor health for several days, but no apprehension was felt until late Friday evening when symptoms of either pneumonia or congestion of the lungs appeared. A physician was summoned and everything was done for the little sufferer, but shortly after 5 o'clock on Saturday morning life became extinct. Burial took place at 2 p.m. on Sunday after a brief funeral ceremony had been conducted at the residence by Rev. J. C. Fisher, of the M. E. church. The bereaved parents have the sincere sympathy of the entire community. But in such an hour of sag bereavement human sympathy, although precious, does not fully satisfy the sorrow laden heart. To Him who "doeth all things well," in whose keeping is all life, and who is able to give comfort to hearts that are heavy laden, the sorrowing parents and friends are commended.

Section 2

 Descendants of

David Doig and Agnes Monteith and Bathia Thomson

1. David1 Doig, born abt 1706 Of Kincardine, Perth, Scotland.  He married (1) on 30 Dec 1731 in Kincardine, Perth, Scotland Agnes Monteith, born abt 1710 Of Kincardine, Perth, Scotland; died abt 1732 Of Kincardine, Perth, Scotland; (2) on 11 Dec 1736 in Kilmadock, Perth, Scotland Bathia Thomson, born abt 1715 Of Kilmadock, Perth, Scotland.

Notes for David Doig

Note: The Kilmadock Parish record is mostly a rat's nest during this period and is missing or unreadable. The parish record in missing from Oct 1746 to Oct 1748.

The two marriages are based on approx. age and location.

On 27 Nov 1731 David Dog and Agnes Monteith appeared before the Kincardine Kirk Session. Agnes was with child, and they admitted to fornication committed in Kilmadock Parish. They were married on 31 Dec 1731 and daughter Janet Dog was christened 12 Mar 1732 [Father listed as John on the IGI].

It is presumed that Agnes died shortly after the birth of her daughter and David remarried to Bathia Thomson.

David Dog of McKeanstoun was witness to the christening of two children of Walter Dog of McKeanstoun and Jean McFarlane: Walter Dog on 17 Aug 1740 (with Patrick Caddel) and Elisabeth Dog on 11 Mar 1750 (with John Thomson).  Walter may have been a brother. David Dog of McOrriston was a witness in 1744 and in McKeanston in 1750.

An unrecorded son named after David's father (Walter or Paul?) may have been born about 1737.  Another child was probably born during the period 1746-8 when the parish record is missing.

MARRIAGE: They pledged marriage the same day in neighboring Kincardine Parish. David was listed from Kincardine and Bathia from Kilmadock.

Notes for Bathia Thomson

Her father is probably John Thomson in Bog of McCorastoun based on being a witness at the christening of three of her four children.

Children of David Doig and Agnes Monteith were as follows:

2          i           Janet2 Doig, born 1732 in Kincardine, Perth, Scotland; christened 12 Mar 1732 in Kincardine, Perth, Scotland.

Children of David Doig and Bathia Thomson were as follows:

3          i           John2 Doig, born 1739 in Kincardine, Perth, Scotland; christened 18 Mar 1739 in Kincardine, Perth, Scotland.   Notes: Witnesses at John's christening were Patric Graham and John Hilhouse.

Patrick Mollison.

Notes for David Doig

Witnesses at David's christening were Walter Dog, there, and John Thomson in Bog of McCorastoun. [The following link is based on age, location, and a variation of the Scottish naming custom.]

David was a farmer at Mackeanstone near Thornhill.  He owned houses and part of a yard on the north side of the main street in Thornhill.  The property was let to Daniel McFarlane, shoemaker and feuar in Thornhill. David died about the end of 1779 in a colliery (mining) accident; his son David was born posthumously in Feb 1780.

Notes for James Doig

Witnesses at Paul's christening were John Patterson of Frew and John Menzies of Bog of Mackeistoune.  James was a twin of Paul.

James and his brother David seised houses and part of a yard on the north side of main street in Thornhill on 6 Dec 1783 from Daniel McFarlane in Thornhill; they disposed of the property to Archibald Murdoch, tenant in Auchinsault, and Elizabeth Ferguson, his spouse, on 8 Dec 1800, recorded 7 Jan 1801 in Perth (#4661).  James used his share of the proceeds to travel to America.

James emigrated to America and arrived in New York 16 Apr 1801; also with him were William Christie, Malcolm McNaughton, Andy Easton, Jimmy Irvin, Jean Doig, and John Doig.  He went to the highlands below Newburg, and then to Salem, Washington Co.  Then he went to East Greenwich and stayed at the home of Andrew Doig.  In 1803 he was with James Shaw, a merchant in Argyle.  In 1805 he and James Shaw went to Albany.  He became a naturalized citizen in 1811.

About 1812 James bought 100 acres of the farm of Nathaniel Goodwin, 2 miles east of Fort Miller and the Hudson River and 3 miles west of South Argyle.  He erected a log house and a barn just to the east.  He cut his own timbers, dragged them 2 miles east to a saw mill on the Moses Kill, and himself sawed and hewed them.  He made fences from the tree stumps he dug out, intertwining the roots into an impenetrable barrier.  The creek land was clayey, but the hill land full of stones which he used to build more fences.

In 1820, 1830 (page 308) (0110100100000-00110100000000), and 1840 they lived at Fort Edwards, NY.  James built the homestead in 1835, the siding was 2" thick plank.  He planted two spruce trees in the front, a local custom.  In 1850 James Doag lived in Fort Edward (page 192) with his wife Elizabeth, son William, Martha J. McCullogh?, and a laborer Cornelia Boyle, 19 Ireland. In 1860 Elisabeth lived there with her son, William.  The house is still standing.

The family first attended the Associate Presbyterian Church at South Argyle.  About 1830 there was a dissension in the congregation, and James joined a new church at North Argyle. A five mile trek was necessary each way to hear the two-hour sermons.  He refused to have a photograph made, taking the Biblical injunction seriously.  He was a righteous and pious man.

James suffered from arteriosclerosis.  He was taken suddenly ill and died after three days on 21 Apr 1854 of a cerebral hemorrhage.

Children of James Doig and Elizabeth Goodwin were as follows:

16        i           David4 Doig, born 23 Apr 1817 in NY; died 29 Apr 1845 in NY.   Notes: David did not marry. David's back was broken by a falling beam at a barn raising in the community, and he lingered for several months before passing away.

Notes for David Doig

Witnesses at David's christening were William Gow and William Thompson, both of Mackeaston.  David was born posthumously, as his father was already deceased.

David and his brother James owned houses in Thornhill, sold in 1800 (See note for James). David was a carpenter and millwright at Faskine at Old Monkland, Lanark from 1814 to 1824, being listed as an engineer from 1826 and an engine smith in 1855. 10. Crawford3 Mollison (Jean2 Doig, David1), born 24 Mar 1775 in Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland; christened 24 Mar 1775 in Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland.  He married Elizabeth Fullerton, born abt 1779.

Children of Crawford Mollison and Elizabeth Fullerton were as follows:

30        i           Alexander Fullerton4 Molleson, born 17 Apr 1805 in London, England; christened 2 Jun 1806 in Old Church, St. Pancras, London, England; died 10 Apr 1885 in Kew, Victoria, Australia.   Notes: See: http://www.trinity.unimelb.edu.au/library/address.shtml. Alexander was born on 17 April, 1805 and although no precise details are available, he obviously received a good education. He visited New York an 1825 and was in the United States and Canada in 1830. On October 27, 1833 he sailed from the Isle of Wight abord the James Harris. The oher passengers included Dr (later Sir) Charles Nicholson and the revd G. K. Rusden and family. the James Harris arrived in Sydney in May, 1834 and soon after Alexander joined Francis Rusden who had been appointed an Assistant Surveyor. Their work was in Bathurst and Lake George districts where experience gained in the survey camps was to prove most valuable. The eighteen thirties saw an unprecedented expansion of settlement as the pastures of south eastern Australia were explored and occupied by the pastoralists and speculators who "squatted" beyond the official limits of occupation. The first penetration of what is now Victoria was from Van Dieman's Land by the Hentys and Portland and by Batman and his party at Port Phillip. But is was only a matter of time before stock were overlanded from the settled districts round Goulburn. J.O. randell in An Overlanding Diary Melbourne, 1980, relates Mollison's involvement in this movement: "Early in 1836 a pastoral syndicate, Alexander F. Mollison and Co., was informed in Sydney. The other three members were Severin Kanute Salting, Charles James Garrard and Charles Nicholson. Salting and Garrard were already trading as merchants, under that firm name, and Nicholson was Mollison's former shipmate." The partnership brought a run, "Uriara", in the upper Murrumbidgee district, near Yass. Donald McLean, an overseer, was engaged about March, 1836. The purchase of "Uriara" served two purposes; it provided an assembly point for men, drays, stock and stores, and also, by virtue of its situation within settled districts, entitled the partnership to apply for assigned convict workmen. Uriara's 23,000 acres were indifferent quality and there was no intention of its being retained. Alexander Mollison called at the Survy office in Sydney and was allowed to copy Major Mitchell'c Itinerary between the Coliban and Murrumbidgee Rivers, from 4-24 October, 1836. Major Sir Thomas Mitchell's book, Three Expeditions into the Interior of New South Wales, was first published in London during 1838, with a second revised edition in 1839. By the end of March, 1837 6,000 sheep, 600 cattle, 20 horses and 20 working bullocks had been purchased. With them were assembled some 30 shepherds, teamsters, labourers and other hands, some free, some ticket-of-leave men, some assigned convicts, together with Mollison, McLean and three native boys. On 11 April the expedition comprising men, animals, four bullock drays and two horse carts headed South. Mollison's Diary chronicles the journey. Progress was slow with many halts and diversions. By November the Campaspe River had been reached and drays were sent to Melbourne to bring up supplies. Then on 6 December the expedition halted near the present township of Malmsbury, midway between Mount Macedon and Mount Alexander. Here Mollison took up a 58,600 acre pastoral lease naming it "Coliban". Next year he was joined by his younger brother, William Thomas and took up another 60,000 acre pastoral leasehold which formed "Pyalong Station". On 1 September, 1841 Alexander bought out his partners' interests. This necessitated heavy borrowing, but only in 1848 was "Coliban" sold and his interests concentrated at "Pyalong". Soon after he purchased "Terrick Terrick Plains Station", a 65,000 lease between Bendigo and the River Murray. Alexander Mollison never married. He travelled extensively in Britan and Europe with his sisters Jane and Elizabeth. He came to Australia in 1859 to arrange the sale of his remaining interest in Pyalong Station to his brother William, and returned to England in 1860. Accompanied by his surviving sister Elizabeth, Alexander Mollison came back to Melbourne once more in 1873 and went to live at "Dracombe", Kew. While resident in Port Phillip Mollison was active in public life, concerned to promote the Separation of the District from New South Wales, and an advocate for education and security of tenure f
