Notes for John Doig

      In 1841 John was a carpenter living at Westownend, Kirriemuir.  He moved to Hilltown, Dundee. In 1851 he was a journeyman joiner living at 29 Hilltown, Dundee with his wife Betty and children James (journeyman shoemaker), William (errand boy), David, Alexander, and Ann.  He became a master joiner by 1860. In 1864 he lived at 21 Bucklemaker Wynd.  In 1881 he was a master house builder residing at 4 Morrison's Court, Dundee with his wife Jane, unmarried son Thomas (joiner), niece Margaret Doig (dressmaker), granddaughter Agnes Elizabeth Doig (illegitimate daughter of Jane Doig), and a friend Ann Davidson, a widow age 73 from Kirriemuir. In 1891 they lived in St. Clement, Dundee, and son Thomas and his family lived with them. In 1901 he and Agnes lived in St. Clement, Dundee with granddaughter Agnes Doig.

Confirmation granted at Dundee, 1 March 1902, to William Doig, Druggist, Dundee, David Doig, Blacksmith, Tay Villa, Cantwell Road, Plumstead, Woolwich, Thomas Doig, residing abroad, and John Lyall Doig, Druggist, Dundee, Executors nominated in Will or Deed, dated 11 August 1892, and recorded in Court Books of Commissariot of Forfar, 27 February 1902. Value of Estate, £256, 5s. 9d.

      In 1863 William was a chemist living at 21 Bucklemaker Wynd, Dundee. In 1881 William was a chemist and druggist in Dundee. In 1891 he lived in St. Mary, Dundee with his wife Eliza and children John, Catherine, and William. Later he moved to Dunira, West Newport, Forgan, Fife where he and Eliza lived in 1901. William belonged to the Wesleyan Church.

Notes for David Doig

      In 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1902 David was a blacksmith residing at Tay Villa, 12 Cantwell Road, Plumstead, Woolwich (Kent), England. In 1901 his nephew David L. Robertson (17 Scotland), newspaper reporter, lived with them. In 1916 he lived at Briarbank, American Muir Road, Downfield, Dundee.

     

      David died 2 Sept 1934 and was buried with the family in the Eastern Necropolis, Dundee. Extract of testament recorded in England: David Doig of 18 Americanmuir Road, Downfield, Dundee died 2 September 1934.  Confirmation of Agnes Paton or Doig, John Doig and David Morrison Doig.  Sealed in London 11 June 1936. Witness to David's death certificate was an "intimate friend" George Kidd, who reported his parents as John Doig and Ann Ellis (actually his grandparents).

Notes for James A. Doig

      James was born before his parents were married, and an unusual circumstance occurred in that his mother named him James while his father still had a living son named James.

     

      In 1871 he may be the James Doeg (24 Dundee), an able bodied seaman on the ship "Hare" in Warkworth, Nothumberland, England.

     

      In 1874 James was a joiner (operative) living at 53 Wellgate, Dundee. James, Agnes and son John left Greenock on 21 June 1878 on the steam ship "Largo Bay;" they arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia, on 20 Sept 1878.  The family went to the Moonta Goldfields in SA.  They arrived at Fremantle on 13 Nov 1885 on the Chittoor and settled there.  James continued to work as a joiner, and the contract for the construction of the Scots Church in Fremantle in 1890 was let to builders Petrie and Doig.  At that time they lived on Bannister Street.  In 1893 James was lured to the gold fields in Kalgoorlie, WA.

     

      James returned to Fremantle in 1895 suffering from a fever contracted in the gold fields, and he died 16 Dec 1895 in Fremantle.  Agnes and her family remained in Fremantle, and most of their descendants live in that area to this day.

     

      MARRIAGE: They were married after banns according to the forms of the established church.  Witnesses were John Brown and Mary Ann Finlay.
