Notes for Robert Doig

      Robert enlisted at the age of 15 in the 26th Regiment of Foot in the British Army on 26 April 1813 at Dumfries, Scotland.  He was a private and served 5 years and one month in Gibraltar and the remainder in England and Scotland.  He transferred to the 47th Regiment on 25 Jan 1824.  He was stationed at Colewort Barracks, Portsmouth, Hampshire, England.  Robert was discharged on 13 May 1837 from "seven years labouring under a chronic cough, with rheumatic pains and considerable weakness in the small of the back and loins."  At the time of his discharge at age 40 he was described as 5 foot 8½ inches in height, gray hair, gray eyes, and sallow completion.

     

      In 1841 Robert was an Army Pensioner living on Back Lane, Kilmarnock, Ayr. In 1851 he was a Chelsea Pensioner living at Braefoot, Scot's Land, Kilmarnock.  With he and his wife were Mary, Agnes, Emila, and Thomas.

     

      MARRIAGE: They pledged marriage on 26 June 1822 at High Church, Paisley, Renfrew, and again 3 Sept 1822 in Kilmarnock.

 

Notes for Jean Stevenson

      In 1861 Jean lived in Kilmarnock, Ayr with her son Thomas and daughter Emily. In 1871 Jane was a widow residing at 8 Robertone Place, Kilmarnock with her unmarried children Thomas (dyer) and Emma. Her son Thomas witnessed her death certificate.

In the 1889 Washington Territorial census they are in Roslyn, Kittitas Co., WA.

     

      Alexander was previously married to Agnes Love on 31 Dec 1861 at Crosshill Manse, Old Monkland, Lanark. Witnesses were James Love and Thomas Moir. They had children Alexander, Rebecca, and Henrietta.

"Mrs. Elizabeth Kane, wife of James Kane, aged 59 years, died yesterday at her home, 27 Fulton Street. She leaves behind her husband, six daughters, Anna, Lena, and Beatrice Kane, Mrs. Edward Tole, and Mrs Jeremiah Sullivan, all of Lowell, and Mrs. Michael Duffy of New Orleans; also three sons James, Robert, and William Kane. The body was later removed to the home of her daugher, Mrs. Jeremiah Sullivan, 3 Lagrange Street."

Obituary: Lowell, MA "Courier Citizen," 15 June 1915 -

"The funeral of Mrs. Elizabeth Kane took place yesterday from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jeremiah Sullivan, 3 Lagrange Street, at 8 o'clock. At St. Michael's church a funeral mass was celebrated at 9 o'clock by Rev. Francis Mullen. The choir under the direction of Thomas P. Boulger sang the Gregorian mass, Miss Margaret Griffin and Thomas P. Boulger sustaining the solos. Miss Ella M. Reilly was organist. Among the floral tributes were: Pillow, inscribed "Mother," from the family and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Tole; wreath, Mr. and Mrs. Jeremiah Sullivan; spray, grandchildren; cross on base, Pony club; cross, warp room girls of Boott mill and other tributes from Miss Mary and Killie Connors and Mrs. Mary Farrell. The bearers were Jeremiah Sullivan, Patrick Sullivan, Daniel Meehan, Owen Healey, Edard Tole and John Carr. Burial was in St. Patrick's cemetery, where Rev. Francis Mullen read the committal prayers. Undertaker Peter H. Savage had charge of funeral arrangements."

Notes for James Francis Kane

      In 1881 James Cain was a coal miner residing in the Back Buildings at Dimity Street, Abbey, Renfrew with his wife Elizabeth and children Elizabeth (scholar), Rozey, and Mary. James and family immigrated to America in about 1887. In 1900 James was a day laborer in Chelmsford, Middlesex Co., MA (page 317) with his wife Elizabeth and ten children. They had had 13 Children with 3 deceased. In 1910 they lived at 27 Fulton Street, Lowell, Middlesex Co., MA. In 1920 he lived with the family of his daughter Anna Thomas at 5 Queen Street, Lowell. In 1930 he still lived with them at 53 Branch Street, Lowell.

     

      Obituary: Lowell, MA "Sun," 7 Feb 1836 -

"The funeral of James Kane took place this morning from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edgar Thomas, 53 Branch Street at 8 o'clock and was largely attended by relative and friends. At St. Patrick's church at 9 o'clock a funeral high mass was celebrated by Rev. John J. McGarry, D.C.L., pastor. The choir under the direction of Mr. Henry Gilday, who also was the organist, sang the Gregorian mass. The solos were sung by Miss Frances Tighe and Mrs. Frank M. Brogan. At the offertory Miss Tighe and Mrs Brogan sang "Pie Jesu" and as the body was borne from the church the choir sang "De Profundis." There were many flowers. The bearers were the following grandsons: Robert and Francis Kane, James Sullivan, Edward Tole, Edgar Thomas and Richard Campbell. Burial was in the family lot in St. Patrick's Cemetery, where committal prayers were read by Rev. Edwin S. Carey. Funeral arrangement were in charge of Peter H. Savage Son, mortician."

      In 1871 Robert was a collier (miner) residing at 14 William Street, Johnstone, Ayr with his siblings Jane (spinner), Elizabeth (mill worker), Mary (mill worker), and John. At the time of his marriage he was an iron miner at Barkip, Dalry, Ayr.

     

      Robert and Ellen entered the US in 1882 and became naturalized citizens. In 1900 Robert was a coal miner residing at Minnesota Street, Hall, Bureau Co., IL with his wife Ellen and 6 children; he reported being married 20 years with 7 children, 1 deceased.

     

      MARRIAGE: Witnesses were Alexander Campbell and Ann Smith.

      Robert registered for the draft in WWI Gary, IN on 5 June 1917. At the time he was a dairyman for Magic City Ice Cream in Gary, reported to have a broken left shoulder. In 1920 he was a dairyman in an ice cream factory residing at 425 4th Avenue, Gary, Lake Co., IN with his wife Emma and daughter Jane Ellen. In 1930 he was the proprietor of an ice cream shop residing at 446 Connecticut Street, Gary with his wife Emma and daughter Jane.
