His service of 22 years and 134 days included as Private from 17 Feb 1808 to 24 Nov 1813, a Corporal from 25 Nov 1813 to 16 Mar 1814, and a Private from 17 Mar 1814 to 30 June 1830. He served 1½ years in Holland and 2½ in France. At David's own request he was discharged at age 42 on 30 June 1830. He was described as 5'5', dark hair, dark eyes, and dark complexion. The officer noted he was a 'good soldier in the field but addicted to drink.'

The following link is based on James' testimony that his father was Peter Doig of Dalfield Walk, Dundee.
In 1851 James was a laborer in a bleach field at West March, Monifieth, Angushire, a suburb of Dundee, and he lodged with John Ogilvie.
James was convicted of assault and robbery in 1854 in Perth, Scotland and sentenced to 15 years. By his own statement at the precognition (pre-trail), James said, 'I am 22 years of age or thereby, am not married, am a dyer and reside with my father Peter Doig in Dalfield Walk, Dundee.' (AD14/54/249) Although James refused to answer other questions, he was listed as literate and a Protestant. James was transported to Australia on the "Runnymede" and arrived on 11 Sept 1856 (4062) TL 8 Oct 1858, CP 3 July 1861, Perth, Western Australia, where he worked for himself.
The family lived in the Swan-Guildford area of Western Australia where James was a laborer for many years at the Houghton vineyard. He later took up property at Fairlawn and grew his own grapes for export.
