      He may be the John Doig christened 25 June 1758 in Newtyle, the son of David Doig and Margaret Patrie.

     

      John was a weaver in Gateside of Eassie, on the road between Glamis and Kirriemuir.

Although his birth is indicated as 1787/8, it was common for underage enlistees to lie about their age. David Doige, a weaver, age 20, born in Nevay, joined the 52nd Regiment of Foot on 17 Feb 1808 at Stirling Castle. His service of 22 years and 134 days included as Private from 17 Feb 1808 to 24 Nov 1813, a Corporal from 25 Nov 1813 to 16 Mar 1814, and a Private from 17 Mar 1814 to 30 June 1830. He served 1 years in Holland and 2 in France. At David's own request he was discharged at age 42 on 30 June 1830. He was described as 5'5', dark hair, dark eyes, and dark complexion. The officer noted he was a 'good soldier in the field but addicted to drink.'

Notes for Peter Doig

      In 1851 Peter was a weaver living at 30 Hospital Park, Dundee.  His wife was not in the household; with him were his children Janet, John, and Mary, and grandson, Peter Hennison [Kinmond] (3 Mains), the illegitimate son of Janet.  On his death record he is listed as a widower and Chelsea pensioner (military).

     

      The second marriage to Helen Chaplain is based on occupation, location, and timing.

     

      Witness to Peter's death certificate was his son-in-law John Thomson.

     

      [Son James Doig is based on James' statement that in 1854 he was the son of Peter Doig of Dalfield Walk, Dundee, the elimination of other probable fathers, and the gap in births in 1832.  It is necessary to find Peter in the 1841 census to confirm this child.]

      In 1851 John was a weaver living with his family at 30 Hospital Park, Dundee. In 1881 and 1891 John was an unmarried laborer in the "Poor House" in Stobswell Maryfield, Dundee.

      Catherine was the illegitimate daughter of Jane Petrie and reputed father David Spankie.

     

      Catherine was a sheeting weaver. John Doig witnessed her death certificate.

Joan was listed as a yarn winder and signed her name "X".

Notes for James Doig

      The following link is based on James' testimony that his father was Peter Doig of Dalfield Walk, Dundee.

     

      In 1851 James was a laborer in a bleach field at West March, Monifieth, Angushire, a suburb of Dundee, and he lodged with John Ogilvie.

     

      James was convicted of assault and robbery in 1854 in Perth, Scotland and sentenced to 15 years.  By his own statement at the precognition (pre-trail), James said, 'I am 22 years of age or thereby, am not married, am a dyer and reside with my father Peter Doig in Dalfield Walk, Dundee.' (AD14/54/249)  Although James refused to answer other questions, he was listed as literate and a Protestant. James was transported to Australia on the "Runnymede" and arrived on 11 Sept 1856 (4062) TL 8 Oct 1858, CP 3 July 1861, Perth, Western Australia, where he worked for himself.

     

      The family lived in the Swan-Guildford area of Western Australia where James was a laborer for many years at the Houghton vineyard.  He later took up property at Fairlawn and grew his own grapes for export.

 

Notes for Elizabeth Robinson

      Elizabeth was the 11th of 13 children.

     

      Elizabeth was transported to Australia as a convict.

      Johan signed her name 'X.' Joan had an illegitimate son in 1857, probably by James Malcolm.  In 1860 she was a weaver living on James Street, Dundee.

      James birth was listed in Dundee in the 1881 census. He signed his name 'X.'

     

      In 1860 James was a weaver living on James Street, Maxwelltown, Dundee.  In 1864 he was a canvas weaver. In 1881 he was a calender laborer residing at 27 Wolseley Street, Dundee with his wife Johanna, children James (calender worker), Malcolm (message boy), Andrew (mill worker), Margaret (scholar), William (scholar), Robert (scholar), and Johanna, and two boarders Mary Thomson (52 Dundee) and Peter Thomson (21 Dundee). In 1884 he was a power loom tenter.  In 1891 he was an unemployed laborer at 7 Clepington Street, Dundee with Joan and children Andrew (yarn dresser), William (cloth lapper), Robert (porter), and Joan (camb. picker).

      In the 1851 census his age is listed as 48, or born 1802/3, in his death record in 1872 reports him as age 72, or born 1799/1800.

     

      In 1851 John was a seaman living at 68 Seagate Street, Dundee.  He was later a shipmaster in the Merchant Service.

     

      Witness to John's death certificate was his son Alexander Doig of 14 Temple Lane, Dundee, who reported his parents as JOHN doig, linen manufacturer, and Mary Craig.

     

      MARRIAGE: John was listed as a sailor, with both from Dundee.

      Ralph, C.M.G. 1974, C.V.O 1954, B.A., Dip. Com., became Under-Secretary Premier's Dept. an Clerk of Executive Cl., W.A., since 1945.  He became Public Service Commissioner, W.A. in 1965 and Chairman of the Public Services Board, W.A. from 1971 to 1974. Ralph was also chairman of the WA Tourist Development Authority, 1959-74; State Government Representative on Council of Perth Commonwealth Games 1962; State Director of Visits to WA of H.M. The Queen and other royal visits, 1954 and 1963.
