John purchased seat 38 at the Chapel of Ease, Norrieston for a cost of £6-11s -11¾d. His first payment was made on June 13 1812 amounting to £2-2s-3d and his final payment on April 1815 was £0-5s-7d. Thus making a total of £6-12s. The seat was sold to William Taylor of Norrieston on 3 Apr 1818.
John was buried next to his parents in Norrieston Churchyard in Thornhill.

After John's death, Janet took her son, Paul, and eight daughters to Canada in 1817; with her were sister, Bella Buchanan, and brother, Thomas. Son Andrew is thought to have gone to Australia, and John, as the eldest remaining son, stayed to farm at Murdieston. Robert is not known to have moved with the family to Canada on the first trip.
Janet settled with her family about 40 miles north of Montreal, east of Lachute, St. Jerusalem Parish, Argenteuil Co., Quebec, along the North River, on the road to St. Jerome, at Upper Lachute.

John purchased back his father's seat 38 at the Chapel of Ease, Norrieston from William Taylor in 1826. He sold it in 1836 prior to leaving for Canada.
John was a farmer at Murdieston Farm near Thornhill, and he is listed in the voter register there in 1832 and 1837. He was a major in the militia based at Stirling Castle.
John had trouble with the factor of his landlord, the Earl of Moray, who tried to force his tenants to vote in favor of Sir George Murray, the Tory candidate for the House of Commons. John voted for Fox Mall, the Reform candidate, and was given notice that the tenancy on Murdieston would be terminated at the end of the current 19 year lease.
John sailed in the fall of 1836 with his family on the vessel The Monarch, and after a seven week voyage arrived in Montreal, Canada. The family settled on a farm at LaChute, about forty miles from Montreal.
In 1838 there was a rebellion in the province headed by a Frenchman named Papineau. John, his cousin Paul (K026), and son John (L107) all served as soldiers with the government troops. John was in the cavalry, and son John served in the infantry under his uncle, Captain Paul Doig (K107).
In 1851, 1861 and 1871 John lived in a one-story frame house in Lachute. He and Anne were listed as Church of Scotland. In 1851 he owned 350 acres with 150 acres in wheat. Later he farmed 55 acres of oats, potatoes, and turnips. In 1871 his daughter Margaret lived at home.

In 1820 Andrew was listed in the census records as a carpenter in Hochelaga Co., Quebec, Canada. In 1829 he was appointed Justice of the Peace in St. Eustache, County of Two Mountains. In 1851 Andrew and Amelia farmed in Lachute; at home were Janet, Agnes, Ann, James, and Archibald.
In the obituary of his daughter Agnes he is described as Capt. Andrew Boa, J.P., who fought in all Loyalist engagements near Montreal in the rebellion of 1837. He was descended on the paternal side from the family of DuBeau, Hugenots, who escaped from France during the religious persecution and settled in Scotland.
