Notes for John Doig
The link to parents is based on age, location, and probability that his parents eldest son would be named John after his grandfather, and John's eldest son named James.
A John Doig born 1 Dec 1782 at Leven, Scoonie went to sea as an Apprentice in 1796. He served 7 years in the Royal Navy in Foreign Service. He registered in the Merchant Service at age 63 on 19 Aug 1845 at Kirkcaldy, Fife (Ticket #167774). He was described as 5 ft 4 in tall, brown hair, fair complexion, blue eyes, and several marks on his arms. He was a Seaman with normal residence in Leven.
It is not certain if he is the John Doig who died in Jan 1841, which would not be correct if he is the above seaman registering in 1845. He had died by 1851.
In 1810 John was a shipmaster in Leven, later listed as a sailor and mariner in Leven.
