Patrick was a tailor and indweller in the SSE Parish of Edinburgh. He was a freeman and Deacon of the Taylors in Potter Row. He died at age 45.

 

Note: Patrick and Peter were interchangeable names, he using Peter at his second marriage.

He registered in the Merchant Service at age 63 on 19 Aug 1845 at Kirkcaldy, Fife (Ticket #167774). He was described as 5 ft 4 in tall, brown hair, fair complexion, blue eyes, and several marks on his arms. He was a Seaman with normal residence in Leven.

 

It is not certain if he is the John Doig who died in Jan 1841, which would not be correct if he is the above seaman registering in 1845. He had died by 1851.

 

In 1810 John was a shipmaster in Leven, later listed as a sailor and mariner in Leven.

In 1837 and 1841 James was a seaman in the Merchant Service from Leven; he was away, and Catharine was living with her two youngest sons at South Side, Scoonie. He registered as a mate (Certificate #244,942) on 7 Apr 1847 at Leith. At that time he was 5' 4" tall and had served in the foreign service.

 

James became a gatekeeper for the Caledonian Railway. He lived near the Float Gate House in Pettinain, Lanark

 

James died instantly when run over by a passenger train. Witness to his death certificate was his son John Doig.

At the time of his marriage to Mary in 1837 Alexander was listed as a weaver. By the birth of his first child the following year he had again become a seaman. He registered in the Merchant Service at Dundee on 23 Dec 1844 (Certificate #83,541). At that time he was described as 5'7'", yellow hair, blue eyes, and fair skin; he had a tattoo on his right arm, AD & MC [Alexander Doig & Mary Carr].

In 1851 and 1861 Mary and the children were living at Lindues Wynd, Dundee; Alexander was a seaman and not with the family. Daughter Margaret was not with the family and may have been deceased. Alexander was home in July 1857.

 

MARRIAGE to Helen Duncan: Alexander and Helen were both listed from Dundee, he as a weaver, and Helen as the daughter of William Duncan.

Both of her parents had died before son Alexander was born so he reported them incorrectly. James was a linen weaver, but he lived in a fishing village and may have been know as a fisherman. In 1891 Elizabeth lived in Ferry Port on Craig, Fife with her children Margaret and William and Elspeth Doig (19). In 1901 she live in Ferry Port with daughter Margaret.
