In 1837 and 1841 James was a seaman in the Merchant Service from Leven; he was away, and Catharine was living with her two youngest sons at South Side, Scoonie. He registered as a mate (Certificate #244,942) on 7 Apr 1847 at Leith. At that time he was 5' 4" tall and had served in the foreign service.
James became a gatekeeper for the Caledonian Railway. He lived near the Float Gate House in Pettinain, Lanark
James died instantly when run over by a passenger train. Witness to his death certificate was his son John Doig.

He registered in the Merchant Service at Dundee on 23 Dec 1844 (Certificate #83,541). At that time he was described as 5'7'", yellow hair, blue eyes, and fair skin; he had a tattoo on his right arm, AD & MC [Alexander Doig & Mary Carr].
In 1851 and 1861 Mary and the children were living at Lindues Wynd, Dundee; Alexander was a seaman and not with the family. Daughter Margaret was not with the family and may have been deceased. Alexander was home in July 1857.
