Notes for Frederick Doig

Frederick was a grocer, including tea and spirits, at Lawnmarket, South Side, Edinburgh in 1790 and 1795. In 1800 and 1814 his home was at the head of Riddle's Close. In 1820 and 1829 Margaret was the grocer at 320 Lawnmarket.

 

Frederick sasined parts of a tenement in West Bos, Edinburgh from Alexander Goodwin on 16 May 1789; recorded 19 May 1789 in Edinburgh. On 11 June 1797 he sasined 2 roods of land with houses on the west side of Hilltown of Dundee, in security of £100 on bond to Thomas Mathew, flaxdresser, Hilltown of Dundee on 3 July 1797; recorded 5 Aug 1797 in Forfar.

 

Frederick was a Burgess and Guild-Brethren of Edinburgh effective 27 Aug 1812.

 

Frederick died in 1815. His testament and inventory was proved on 18 Aug 1815 and 29 Sept 1815 at the Edinburgh Commissary Court. His son, John, was heir general on 30 July 1816 on a document recorded 22 Aug 1816 in Edinburgh. In his will dated in 1807 he names his wife and children John, James, and Margaret.

 

MARRIAGE: In the marriage record Frederick was listed as a gentleman's servant in Tiviot Row, and Margaret as a residenter there, daughter of James Friar in the parish of Stow, Midlothian.

Testament recorded 27 Jan 1824 in the Edinburgh Commissary Court (150/21): The testament dative and inventory of the debts and sums of money which were addebted, residing, owing to umquhill Lieutenant James Doig sometime of His Majesty's fifty seventh Regiment of foot at the time of of his decease who died at Edinburgh upon the nineteenth day of September Eighteen hundred and twenty three years made and given up by Mary Doig and Margaret Doig residing in Edinburgh sisters germain of the defunct and only Executrices Dative qua nearest of kin Decreed to him and that the Decreed of the Commissaries of Edinburgh as the same dated the twenty first day of November Eighteen hundred and twenty three years in inself bears. Follows the Inventory - In the first the said umquhill James Doig had pertaining and belonging to him at the time of his decease foresaid the sum of one thousand two hundred and fifty six points sterling being the value of eight shares of the capital stock of the Commercial Banking Company of Scotland... etc. Total 1,139 pounds. He moved to St. Andrews where on 3 May 1826 he acquired a piece of ground in St. Andrews, Fife, with a house and stables, from Captain Thomas Mason of the Royal Artillery (This property was sasined by Patrick Mudie, M.D., on 12 Jan 1829 to the creditors of Captain Mason, recorded 30 Jan 1829 in St. Andrews.) In 1826 he founded the firm of Alexander Doig & Sons, which continued until 1905. At first he was not a member of the Wright Incorp, and as on several occasions he had encroched "on the liberties of the Trade by working within the Burgh of St. Andrew," in Feb 1830 the Incorp employed John Wilson, writer in Cupar, to raise an action in Cupar Sheriff Court against him; on 15 June 1830 Doig petitioned to be admitted to the Trade, and the Incorp agreed, "but only if he paid the whole expenses of the Incorp incurred in the process against him, also his own expenses, and give up defying the process;" he was admitted Freeman on 30 June 1830, and served as Boxmaster in 1835-37, at which time he lived at Windmill Brae. By 1831 Alexander was a cabinetmaker living at Windmill. In 1841 he was a cabinetmaker living at Windmill Path, Golf Place, St. Andrews; his wife, James and William were at home. In 1851 Alexander was a master cabinetmaker living on City Road, St. Andrews, Fife. Living with him were his son, James, and sister-in-law (?), Hannah Ireland, b. 1812/3 at Ferry Port on Craig, Fife. Hannah was his house servant.

 

Alexander's testament was recorded 27 Sept 1871 in the Cupar Sheriff Court.

Andrew and Isabella began their family in Scotland and later moved to England. Then Andrew went to America in 1832 and located in Philadelphia, PA. Isabella and 5 children later arrived in New York on 5 Aug 1833 on the "Chase."

 

In the early 1840s the family moved to Washington D.C. Andrew was a stonecutter and worked on the Capitol Building until 1847. Then the family moved to Hadley in Homer Township, Will Co., IL, where he farmed. In 1850 he made the overland trip to California, from whence he returned moderately successful. In the 1850 census recorde 3 Dec 1850 Andrew Doeg farmed in Homer Township with his wife Issabel and children Thomas, Andrew, James, issabella, William, Alexander, and John H; the value of his property was $1,000. In 1860 he farmed in Homer with his wife Isabella and sons James and Alexander; the value of his land was $5,500 with personal assets of $1,200. His son Andrew lived on the adjoining farm. They later relocated to New Lenox, Will Co., IL. In 1870 he was a flour dealer in Chicago, 13th Ward with his son John. He was well known for his rugged honesty and all the qualities of a useful citizen.

 

Andrew died at his son Alexander's home in New Lenox.

Thomas Doig, mason, was owner of the ship "Ann" in Dundee, registered in 1848 and 1854.

 

Thomas was a stone cutter, and he worked on the statue of Lord Nelson in Trafalgar Square, London. He came to the United States in 1854 and was naturalized in 1856. He first settled in Rockford, Winnebago County, IL, and in Sept 1856 the family moved to Dodge County, MN. In about 1858 in Wasioja, MN, he and his sons built the stone Doig house (National Historical Register, 1975), the Wasioja Seminary, and the Wasioja School. In 1880 Thomas was living with his son, John, in Claremont, MN.

OLD BAILEY SESSIONS PAPERS, 22nd JUNE 1826 No.1144 THOMAS DOIG was indicted for stealing on 10th June a knife value 3s the goods of Henry Hely Hutchinson. Cornelious Collins: "I am butler to Henry Hely Hutchinson of Lower Grosvenor Street. On Saturday 10th June about 2-o-clock there was a knife on the pantry shelf. I had been in the Housekeepers room, and when I came out the prisoner had got this knife out with a stick. I took him into custody." Robert Turner: "I was called in and took the prisoner with this silver handled knife. This little jemmy was found on him, a stick with what he drew the knife out." Guilty. Age 14. Transportation for 7 Years. He was taken from Newgate Gaol on 15th July 1826 and went to the Euryalus Hulk at Chatharn which was used to take convicts under the age of 16. On 3rd November 1830 he was transferred to the Discovery Hulk at Deptford where he completed his 7 year sentence, being released on 26th June 1833.

 

Thomas' wife Isabella appears to have lied about her age, she being 12 years older than him. All of their 4 known children died young. He abandoned Isabella and went on the road, with both of them ending up on the poor roles.

 

Thomas was a weaver in his younger days. He is probably the Thomas Doig (30 Angus) who was an agricultural laborer at Balmuir, Tealing (north of Dundee) with field servant Barbara Stark (20 Angus). In 1841 his wife Bell Doig was a yarn winder living on Blackness Road, Dundee with her three children; Thomas was not with them. In 1851 Isabell was a weaver living at 3 Annfield Road, Liff & Benvie, Dundee with her daughter Lilly; Thomas and her two son were not at home. In 1861 she lived by herself on Annfield Road; she is still listed as married, but Thomas was not with her. In 1881 Thomas was a tramp boarding with John Smith, a farmer at Wester Boggs, Rathven, Banff. In 1891 Thomas lived in Rathven.

 

Witness to Thomas' death certificate was James Ferdune (?), Inspector of Poor, High Street, Buckie, Rathven.

Thomas was named after Thomas Doig, uncle.

 

Thomas arrived in America in 1832. From age 12 to 18 he worked as a butcher in Philadelphia. He followed the family to Washington D.C. and worked as a bricklayer there for three years, and in Baltimore, MD until 1849. In the fall of 1849 he joined the family in Homer Township, Will County, IL. The following year he joined the rush to the gold fields in California. There he had some success. In January of 1853 he returned to New Lenox, Will Co., IL. In May of 1854 he purchased 172 acres of good land. This he farmed until at least 1890. In 1860 he farmed in New Lenox (page 360) with his wife Ann, children Sarah O., John Ewans, Isabella, Anna, and Irwin, and 2 farmhands. In 1870 Thomas Doag farmed in New Lenox (page 356) with his wife Anna M., children Anna M. and Thomas J., and 1 servant and 1 farmhand; the value of his property was $9,850 with personal assets of $4,070.

 

Thomas became naturalized a U.S. citizen on 10 Oct 1956 at the Winnebago Circuit Court; witnesses were William Brown and I. H. Baker.

 

Thomas was active in local politics and served on the Will County Board of Supervisors in 1864, 1866, 1867, and 1869. The family attended the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1900 Thomas and Ann were living with their daughter Annie and husband George L. Francis Jr.

John went to Chicago at age 17. There he worked in a music store, sold real estate and was in the building trade. In 1870 he was living with only his father in Chicago, 8th Ward.

 

In 1880 John sold cigars and tobacco and resided at 1039 S. Lake Street, Chicago (page 286) with his wife Jennie, son Alvin H., father Andrew, and a servant Augusta Lowner, age 16 from Sweden. John returned to New Lenox in the spring of 1890 and purchased 80 acres on Maple Street. He then returned to Chicago, and in 1896 he lived at 445 Warren Avenue.

 

John moved with his new family to Maxwell Township, Sangamon County, IL by 1900. By 1906 the family was living at 168 20th Street in San Diego, CA and John was working in the grocery and notions business. They moved to 467 20th Street by 1908, Anna Street, City Heights, by 1909 and 117 W. Washington, San Diego, by 1915. John owned land in the Otay Valley, but lost all in the flood.

In 1851 Alexander was a baker's apprentice with William Robertson at 99 Cowgate, Dundee.

 

Alexander came with his father to the United States in 1855 and settled in Rockford, IL. In Sept 1856 he located in Dodge Co., MN. In 1860 he lived with his brother Andrew and wife Agnes in Wasioja, Dodge Co, MN. He was at first a house builder.

 

On 14 June 1861 Alexander enlisted in Company C, Second Regiment, Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. He was mustered out as a Corpral on 29 June 1864 at Nashville, TN. Alexander later filed for a military pension as an invalid 30 Mar 1891. His widow applied for a pension 8 Aug 1916.

 

In Oct 1865 he entered the employ of the Winona & St. Peter Railroad, later a part of the Chicago & Northwestern system. In 1870 he was listed as a carpenter and joiner, living in Claremont, Dodge Co., MN. By gradual promotions he became superintendent of Bridge & Builder's department of the railroad, with a construction force of 120 to 220. Alexander took an active part in public affairs, and he served on the city council. He lived at 221 Winona Street in 1880 and 415 W. Broadway, Winona, MN in 1900 and 1913. The 1900 census (page 224) Alexander and Matilda as having 5 children with 4 living.

He received a pension as an invalid in 1880. In the 1890 Veteran's census he lived in Kasson, MN. Catherine applied for a Widow's pension on 7 Jan 1909.

Notes for John Henry Doig Jr.

John came to San Diego, CA with his parents in about 1906. In 1920 they lived at 134 W. Hawthorne, San Diego.

 

John was a pioneer in early radio and held the fifth amateur license granted in California, with call letter W6AE; he held a gold card from the FCC. In 1925 he became a teacher of radio and electronics at San Diego High School. In 1930 he was a city school instructor residing at 4187 Alabama, San Diego with his wife Genevieve and daughter Alma.

 

World War II interrupted John's teaching in 1940. He had joined the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1930. He was an expert in SONAR and worked with the fleet and submarines in San Diego and in Recife, Brazil. His campaigns included the European Theater. In 1943 he was promoted to Commanding Officer of the Navy's school at Texas A & M. He separated in 1946 and retired in 1958 from the Navy. He returned to teaching until his health failed during the 1960's.
