In 1851 William was a tinsmith lodging with David Forbes at Henderson's Wynd, Dundee; his birthplace was reported as Dundee. In 1861 William was a tinsmith living at 227 Hawkhill, Dundee with his wife Jane Adamson and daughter Agnes.
The informant on William's death certificate was his son-in-law (?) William Small.

An extract of Agnes' testament reads: 17 August 1887 - Confirmation of Agnes Alexander Doig, 113 High Street, Lochee, who died 16 Apr 1887, at Lochee, testate, granted at Dundee, to William Small, Ironmoulder, Lochee, Executor nominated in Will or Deed, dated 9 April 1887, and recorded in Court books of Commissariot of Forfar, 11 August 1887. Value of Estate, £262. 2s.1d.
