Notes for Euphemia Ogilvie
Notes by Anne Newman:
Alma Morris talks in her letter of staying with grandma (Euphemia Robertson) and 'she would give me potatoe and herring so often and it was delicious'. Alma was one of the daughters of Euphemia's daughter, Jane.
Euphemia's death certificate shows her parents as David Ogilvie (Stonemason) and Janet Doig (death certificates are often incorrect). The death certificate for Euphemia Robertson (nee Ogilvy) lists last address as Chum St Bendigo (Her daughter Euphemia Eddy's home.) The minster who officiated at her funeral was Weleyan. The death notice placed in the "Bendigo Advertiser" by her son David (Dan) reads:
The Friends of Mr DAVID ROBERTSON, of High street,
Golden-square, are respectfully invited to follow the Remains of his late
beloved MOTHER, Mrs Euphemia Robertson (relict of the late Mr Donald Robertson)
of Long Gully, to the Bendigo Cemetery. The funeral is appointed to move fromthe
residence of her son-in-law (Mr Thoams Eddy), Chum Street, at half-past three
o'clock punctually this day (Wednesday). William Farmer, Undertaker, McCrae
street.
Notes for Donald Robertson
Notes by Anne Newman:
Donald became miner in Australia Grocer/ twist dealer flaxstower Scotland
The Family Bible states that Donald (2) was born on 26 June 1811 in the parish of Little Dunkeld. The copy of the parish record is difficult to read (Film1040123) but the entry states 27 June but the year is illegible. He is shown as being 43 years old in 1855 on his father's death certificate.
Documents looked at so far have two conflicting wedding dates: 3rd Feb 1842 (from the 1882 diary of Donald (2)'s son Martin Robertson), and 3rd February 1843 (LDS records). Death certificate in 1874 states Donald and Euphemia were married 30 years when he died making the later date more likely to be correct.
Note that the first child David was born 22 June 1843. Re the marriage of Donald and Euphemia - somewhere I have found that Donald was 30 yrs old and Euphemia was 22 yrs old though if the 1841 census was correct Euphemai was only 17 yrs old at her marriage. Donald's father was a farmer and Euphemai's father was a stonemason.
Death certificate also says Donald spent one year in New Zealand and 18 years in Victoria, Australia, indicating the family arrived in Australia in about 1855. DC says last address was Long Gully. His son Martin Robertson of Golden Square Sandhurst registerd his death. Donald is listed on his death certificate as a miner.
Donald and Euphemia are buried in section B5 of Bendigo cemetery (Victoria, Australia) which is near the front gates, somewhere in the vicinity of the small office building which is on the left. The Robertson were able to purchase the grave and therefore able to erect a grave stone. Apparently the grave is difficult to find. The 'David' buried with Donald and Euphemia is Dan Robertson's son David who died at 6 mths and was buried 24 April 1892.
The 1841 Census of Dundee has a Donald Robertson (25 yrs) working as a store porter and a John Robertson (20 yrs) working as a blacksmith living together in Enumeration District No 98. This address would have been somewhere between Maryfield Hobbs and Stubbs Well Road or in the East end of Bucklemaker Wynd S.S.. This was the description of the district as recorded on the census. There are some James Robertsons recorded as living nearby but no check has been made to see if any of these match to Donald and John's brother.
The 1851 Census for Dundee (taken 4 April) has Donald (39 yrs) and Euphemia (31 yrs) and three children- David ( 7 yrs), Martin (5 yrs) and Clementina (3 yrs) living at 87 Murry Gate in the parish of Dundee. The street of Murry Gate is exists in Dundee today running between Commercial Street and Panmure Street. At the time of the census Donald was a grocer and twist dealer ( Dundee was known for its linen industry at the time). On the brith certificate of Jean Doig Robertson (daughter of Donald born in 1853) Donald's occupation was given as a flaxstower.
Living with Donald and his family in 1851 were Margaret Abbott (12yrs) who was a servant and George Mathew (28 yrs) and his wife Mary (26 yrs) who were lodgers. George Mathews occupation is shown on the census as tobacconist. Donald's sister Barbara (48 yrs) was visiting at the time of the census. The census shows both Donald and Barbara Robertson as being born in Dunkeld Perthshire. They were actually born in Middle Dalguise and baptised in Little Dunkeld.
At the time of the 1851 census there were 233 males and 264 females (total of 497 people living in the Enumeration District No 70 where Donald and Euphemia lived. This covered Meadow Entry northside, Murray gate westside from Meadow Entry to Panmure street and Panmure Street south and north sides.
In 1854 Donald and Euphemia Robertson left their home in Dundee, Scotland and came with their first five children to Australia from the port of Liverpool, England on the Bloomer (886 tons). The Master of the ship was J.B. Allen. Donald was 49, Euphemia 33, David 10, Martin 9, Clementina 6, Charles 3 and the baby Jane was 9 months old. The Bloomer had 271 adult passengers. The story is that the Robertsons paid their own fares and were not assisted immigrants. It left Liverpool on 24 May 1854 and arrived in Melbourne August 1854. The family story has it that the baby, Jane Doig Robertson was so ill on the voyage that they thought she would die. The family went straight to the goldfields of Bendigo in a bullock wagon and settled at St Justs Point, (Eaglehawk) which I think was renamed later as Long Gully. Bena Newman (great grand daughter) remembers the Bill of Sale when the Robertson's sold up to come to Australia in 1854. St Justs Point(from the place of the same name in Cornwall) was named for the Cornish who settled in this area of Bendigo. St Justs Point was that area between Maiden Gully and Moonta and Ironbark. Today it is located by taking the Eaglehawk Road from Bendigo and turning right at Creeth St, Long Gully, down Sparrowhawk Rd. Where Sparrowhawk Rd meets Albert St the area immediately in front is St Justs Point, bounded by Sparrowhawk Gully and the Specimen Hill Race.
All of the Robertson girls had a family surname as part of their Christian names- Clementina Baillie Robertson, Jean (Jane) Doig Robertson and Euphemia Ogilvie Robertson. The fact that these surnames were included is indicative of the importance attached to these names. We know that Jean (Jane) Doig Robertson was named after her mother's mother (Jean Doig) and Euphemia Ogilvie Robertson was named after her mother (Euphemia Ogilvie). At this stage I do not know who Clementina Baillie Robertson was named after. There is a photo in the family album of a Mr and Mrs Baillie, son and daughter taken in Dundee. The name Jobson appears on photos of a young man and woman taken in Dundee in 1877.
