James' inventory was recorded 30 July 1851 in the Dundee Sheriff Court. Notes owed to the deceased 16,228 pounds plus inventory of 2557 pounds plus personal property plus real estate. This was given "in favor of George Hair Newall and Patrick Watson both merchants in Dundee, John Henderson accountant to the National Bank of Scotland at Dundee, Thomas Doig my son, and John Whittet commercial traveler now in Edinburgh my son-in-law..." He names his spouse as Margaret Ramsay and children Catherine, Thomas, Isabella, and Elizabeth. The tax stamp was 280 pounds.

In 1851 James was a carver or turner living with his mother at 13 Blackness Road, Liff & Benvie, Dundee. In 1856 James lived on High Street, Gray's Close, Dundee. In 1861 he was a cabinet carver and turner living at 40½ High Street, Gray's Close.

 

In 1881 James was a house carpenter, and he and Margaret boarded with Janet Houston at 7 Agnes Street, Maryhill, Lanark. [Note: This James with right occupation and age but listed born in Glasgow.]

 

Witness to James' death certificate was his son John Doig, who reported his parents as James Doig, game keeper, and Jane Boag. Both of his grandparents died before he was born and he reported is father age off by 6 years, so it is assumed he made and error in the reporting.
