1. Thomas1 Doeg, born bef 1755 in Scotland; died 1815 in Spartanburg Co., SC.  He married Agnes McCrory, born 1755/65; died 1820/30 in SC, daughter of John McCrory and Jennet (---).

 

Notes for Thomas Doeg

      Thomas served as a Revolutionary Soldier from South Carolina.

     

      On 17 Oct 1785 - Lease and Release: Thomas Doeg, weaver, 96 District, S.C. to William Ross of aforesaid State and District (late of Scotland), merchant, for 13 pounds sterling, 100 acres, being part of a tract of 206 acres granted said Thomas Doeg by Patent 21 Jan 1785, situate in a small branch of Mush Creek a branch of Tygar River bounded on NE land surveyed for John Nicholl, Jr., SW on the other 106 acres now sold by said Doeg to a certain Michael Miller; the other side on vacant land. Wit.: John Nicoll, James Nicoll.  Signed: Thomas Doeg.  Rec. 20 Nov 1787.

     

      Thomas and Agnes purchased 160 acres in Spartanburg Co. from Jacob and Nancy Earnest, recorded 10 Sept 1787; they resold this to James Crow for £20 on 17 Dec 1787.

     

      On 29 Apr 1790 (also in 1789) - Thomas Doeg of Spartanburg to James Garrison of Greenville Co., for 40 pounds sterling, 128 acres granted the said Thomas Doeg 7 May 1787, by Gov. Pinckney, both sides of a small branch of Bush Creek, water of Tyger River.  Signed: Thomas Doeg. Witness: Hu. Warant, James Nicoll, John Nicoll. Forty pounds received 1789. Rec. 9 June 1790.

     

      In 1790 Thos. Doeg lived in 96 District, Spartanburgh Co., SC (12200) with self 16+, 2 sons 0-15, wife, and daughter. In 1800 Thomas Doig and family lived in Spartanburg (page 188) (21101-20010-0). In 1810 Thomas Doigg lived in Spartanburg Co. (page 185) (01101-01101-00) with self and wife 45+, son and daughter 10-16, and son and daughter 16-26.

     

      Thomas died in 1815, and probate was in Spartanburg.

*An Andrew Dog was born about Oct 1727 in Philadelphia, son of Philip and Martha Dog.

      James Doigg, age 26-45, was head of the household  engaged in agriculture in Spartanburg, SC in 1820 (page 241) with his mother, 45+, and brothers 16-26 and under 10. In 1830 James Doegg, age 40-50, lived in Spartanburgh (page 190) with a wife, 20-30, one son under 5, 1 son 5-10, and 2 daughters under 5.

     

      In 1860 James Doig (age 60, SC) and family lived in three adjoining houses in Barkers District, Floyd Co., GA; with the family was Mary F. ? (born 1847/8 in GA), John Bell (born 1839/40 in AL), dentist, and Sarah Bell (born 1842/3 in GA).

      On a deed of 17 July 1823 James Doigg (Spartanburg) to John Brooks (Same); for $169.34 1/2 sold 82 ac; part of 179 ac grant 15 Sept 1785 to William White who sold to Edward Bomar who sold to A.B. Moore who sold to James and Andrew Doigg.  Witness John Lerwi and A.B. Moore.  Signed James Doigg's mark. Witness oath 4 Aug 1823 A.B. Moore to F.H. Legg. Rec. 1 Mar 1824. Dower renounced 2 Feb 1824 Elizabeth Doigg to John S. Rowland.

     

      Andrew married between 1820 and 1825. She was born between 1800/10.

     

      In 1830 Andrew Doegg lived in Spartanburg (page 280) with his wife and daughter.

      Martha could not read or write. In 1850 Martha Doegg lived without a husband in Greene Co. (3rd Dist., p. 171), AL; her son John farmed the property worth $140.00.  In 1860 Martha Doigg was a planteress in Green Co. (Union Prct., page 961-2), AL; all the children were at home except Rachael and Nancy; the value of the land was $100 with personal assets of $400. In 1870 she lived with her son-in-law James Sellers in Union Township, Greene Co., AL (page 838).

 

      Children of John Doegg and Martha (---) were as follows:

      18        i           John P.3 Doegg, born 1831/32 in SC.  He married on 11 Dec 1867 in Greene Co., AL Evaline Elizabeth Ellis, born 26 Jul 1851 in AL; died 12 Jul 1920 in AL.   Notes: John enlisted in the Alabama 36th Infantry, Company B in the Confederate Army. He is also listed in Company H, 4th Alabama Volunteer Militia. In 1870 John Doigg farmed in Union Township, Greene Co., AL (page 838) with his wife Evelina Doigg (19 AL); the value of his property was $90.00 and personal assets of $230.00. He lived next door to his brother Matthew.

Notes for Edmund Doig

      In 1860 E. Doig was a convict for stealing in the Alabama Penitentiary, Coosa Co. (Southern Div., page 116), AL.  He was listed as a blacksmith.

     

      Edmund joined the Alabama 12th Calvary, Company G in the Confederate Army.

     

In 1900 Edmund lived in Spring Garden, Cherokee Co., AL (page 53) with his wife Martha and sons William and Gardner. He lists being married 17 years with 3 children, 2 still living in 1900.

10. William P.3 Doeg (James2, Thomas1), born 1825/30 in SC; died 30 Oct 1864 in Camp Chase, OH; buried in Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery, OH.  He married Lucinda Miller, born 1828/30 in SC, daughter of Jame P. Miller and Lucy (---).

 

Notes for William P. Doeg

      [William as the husband of Lucinda and father of James and Sarah is presumed based on the location, military connection with Andrew Doegg, and death by smallpox as according to family tradition.]

     

      In 1862 William resided in Floyd County, GA.  During the Civil War he enlisted on 4 Mar 1862 as a Private in Company C of the 40th Georgia Infantry.  He and Andrew Doeg were captured on 22 July 1864 at Atlanta, GA.  They were interred as POWs in Camp Chase, OH. William died there of smallpox.

 

Notes for Lucinda Miller

      In 1860 Lucinda was a domestic with her children James and Sarah Doegg in the household of farmer Susan Paden (58 SC) in Cherokee Co., AL; her personal property was valued at $40.  Susan was born in 1811/2 in SC; the value of her land was $1,200 and personal property at $300.  Also in the household was her mother Lucy Miller, born 1788/9 in SC; her personal property was valued at $325.

I don't expect he will succeed in selling. We have moved to Mr. Pools. Will try to farm a little. Have just heard from Will & Julia. They was well. Mattie is gone back to Rome to live. Sank(?) is getting 2 dollars per day. Mert(?) was still up last week when she wrote. We have garden a little. Peeks was well when I heard from them. I am glad Willie learned fast at school. Hope to see you all this summer. Julia sent me her two least children's pictures that are so sweet. I want you to have all of your children's pictures taken and sent to me. Morris is moving over the river to Trumlin. I will close. You must write soon as you get this & let me hear from you often.

Notes for Andrew J. Doegg

      In 1860 Andrew Doig was a laborer in Barkers District, Floyd Co., GA (page 240) with his wife Margaret S. and daughters Mary S. and Martha L.; he lived next door to his brother Thomas and wife Caroline and father James Doig.

     

      Andrew enlisted on 10 Mar 1862 as a Private in the Georgia 40th Infantry, Company C. He was wounded at Dalton, GA, being disabled on retreat. Along with his bother William he became a POW on 22 July 1864 in Atlanta, GA. He was released on 15 May 1865 from Camp Chase, OH. An unverified family story is Andrew once deserted from the Confederate Army, and he was found hiding beneath the floorboards of his smokehouse and forced back into service.

     

      In 1870 Andrew J. Doegg was a farm laborer in Cedar Town, Polk Co., GA with his wife and three daughters. In 1880 Andrew J. Doig was worked on a farm in Township 7, Cherokee Co., AL (page 262) with his wife Martha E., daughters Mary E. and Elizes J., and grandson Jules E. Doig (age 4 GA).

      Matthew T. Doigg served as a Private in Company E, 20th Alabama Infantry of the Confederate Army.

     

      In 1870 Matthew farmed in Union Township, Greene Co., AL (page 838) with his wife Emma and daughter Sarah E.; the value of his property was $220.00 and personal assets of $295.00. He lived next door to his brother John and one farm away from his mother. Matthew appears on the 1877 Tax Records of Lee Co., TX. In 1880 he farmed in District 94, Beat 5, Lee Co., MS (page 210) with his wife Emma and children Sally, Willie, and John A. In 1900 Matt T. Doigg farmed in the 4th Justice Precinct, District 77, Kaufman Co., TX (page 223) with his wife Mattie and children Abe (or Alec), Joseph, Lessie, Ada, and Clinton; he had been married 12 years with 3 children, all living.

      In 1920 Mattie (57 MS) was a farm operator in Elmo, Kaufman Co., TX with her unmarried sister Lula Baren (55 MS).

      In 1910 William was a railroad laborer in Tecumseh, Cherokee Co., AL (page 30B) with his wife Manerva and children Julia, Josie, and Harley. He registered for the draft in WWI on 12 Sept 1918 in Cherokee Co., then living at Rock Run Station. In 1930 he was a section fireman in Jacksonville, Calhoun Co., AL (page 3B).
