The Commonwealth War Graves Commission

The Commission was established by Royal Charter in 1917. Its duties are to mark and maintain the graves of the members of the forces of the Commonwealth who were killed in the two World Wars, to build memorials to those who have no known grave and to keep records and registers, including, after the Second World War, a record of the Civilian War Dead. Specific periods have been allocated in which a death during service of whatever form in the Wars may be considered, so that death due to injures received may be taken into account as well. These dates cover the period 4th August 1914 to 31st August 1921 for the First World War and 3rd September 1939 to 31st December 1947 for the Second World War.
It was the energy of Sir Fabian Ware, the Commission's founder, which established the principles upon which the work of the Commission was built. Those principles, which have remained unaltered, were:
Statistical information is provided to give an idea of the vast task the Commission manages (there are many surprises in these statistics both in terms of numbers and locations of war graves).
The website provides a wealth of information on the history and work of the commission and provides access to the 'Debt of Honour Register', a searchable database of the registers of graves and memorials which many users will find extremely interesting and valuable in their researches. This search facility receives a large number of hits every day and so, on occasions, may be a little slow. It is important that users follow the instructions on the details to be entered so that they may have the best chance of finding their relatives. If you know that an ancestor of yours should appear on the register, it is worthwhile omitting initials and trying alternative spellings if the first attempt does not succeed.
The Register is not just a dry 'database' of names and dates. Information is provided on relatives, where known (about one third of the Commission's records show no details for next of kin. This is because not all the "Final Verification' forms sent to the last known address of a casualty's next of kin were returned, and on the battle or campaign in which the person died. The subject is treated with the greatest respect and dignity and the instructions for use are clear and simple to follow. To further assist enquirers, links are provided to appropriate sites such as the Royal British Legion (http://www.britishlegion.org.uk), the Imperial War Museum (http://www.iwm.org.uk) and Veterans and memorial organisations for the other Commonwealth countries.
The Commission provides information to non-internet users as well. They have a wide range of publications including a series of registers for each of the cemeteries for which they are responsible, listing the war dead in alphabetical order. They are published in parts of around one thousand names, so that registers to the missing are in many parts, but several smaller cemeteries might be grouped together in one volume. Each of the large memorials to the missing has a separate introductory part with an account of the appropriate phase of the war or campaign, a description of the memorial, a location map and, in some cases, photographs, For cemeteries, similar information is published in the register proper, but there are no photographs. Cemetery and memorial registers cost L8.00 per part. Alternatively, all the original registers are available for loan for a fixed period for a nominal charge. There are also a number of books, leaflets (many of which are free of charge) and videos available explaining further the responsibilities and work of the Commission. Further information is available on the website or from:

The thought that has been put in to
the design and crafting of this website is tremendous. It is well worth
a visit for the historical information it contains even if you do not have
an ancestor who died in one of the two World Wars. The statistics are presented
in an easy to read style and, without passing judgement in any way, allow
the user to concentrate on the sheer horror of the wars and the debt that
is owned to those who made the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf.
