The following family is based on age and location. [A James Doig was buried in Dec 1740, but this

James was probably older as 1 pound 10 shillings was paid for the mortcloth.]

 

On 14 Aug 1769 the Liff Kirk Session gave James Doig in Lochyeye 4' 10p to buy meal. James is listed

in 1772 and 1773 on the poor roll with Elspeth (or Margaret) Elder, in 1774, and then from 1775 to 1782

listed with Jean Doig.

John had an illegitimate son by Helen Foggo. On 11 Nov 1758 John Doig and Helen Foggo were

summoned before the Kirk Session, and they admitted to the sin of fornication.  John agreed to appear

in a public place and be suitably exhorted.  He did not appear as agreed on 7 Jan and 14 Jan 1759 but

showed on Sunday, 21 Jan 1759 and was rebuked.  His son William was christened 11 Mar 1759 in Liff

at which time John paid a penalty to the church of £6.  Helen Foggo died several days later, and the

mortcloth was used at her burial on 21 Mar 1759 in Liff.  The Kirk Session relented to John in his time of

distress and paid him £3 each on two occasions in July 1759.

Benvie Parish Church.

servant. In 1891 he was a boarder and retired farmer at 8 High Street, Sutton Benger.

Alexander died at age 85 on 15 Jan 1892 in Sutton Benger and recorded in

a widow residing at 26 Bell Street Lane, Dundee with her unmarried daughter Agnes Sime (machinist)

and grandsons John Sime (telegraph messenger, 16 Dundee) and James Sime (scholar, 6 Dundee).

Dundee - Dreadful Fall from a Window -

On Saturday, about half-past twelve o'clock, a shocking accident occurred at

Crighton's Close, Murraygate, Dundee, which created a great sensation in the

neighborhood. A woman, named Euphemia Doig, who occupied a house on the fourth

storey of a tenement in the Murraygate, was preparing to hang out cloths to dry at the

window looking into the close. The line on which the cloths were to be hung was tied

to each side of the window, and to a long pole projecting from it. While leaning on this

pole, it gave way, and she fell headlong into the Court below, where the unfortunate

woman was found quite dead. It is supposed that death had resulted from a

concussion of the brain. The deceased, who was unmarried, was about forty-five

years of age, and maintained herself by keeping lodgers.

supposed he had accidentally fallen from his cart and the cart had gone over him. Witness to the death

certificate was his father-in-law, James Moir, of 29 Albert Street, Dundee.

Alexander married Mary Moir  daughter of James Moir and Elisabeth Buist on 21 Sep 1861 in Balkirrie, Eassie & Nevay, Angus, Scotland. Mary was born on 5 Dec 1840 in Eassie & Nevay, Angus, Scotland. She died on 19 Nov 1895 in 14 Lyon Street, St. Andrew, Dundee, Angus, Scotland.

221. David Batchelor Doig  (Peter, Alexander, John, John, John, Andrew) was born on 16 Aug 1840 in Carmyllie, Angus, Scotland. He was christened on 30 Aug 1840 in Monikie, Angus, Scotland. He died on 7 Sep 1915 in Dundee District Asylum, Liff, Angus, Scotland.  The cause of death was cerebral hemorrhage after 28 days and organic brain disease after 28 years.  

In 1862 David was an assistant gamekeeper in Buddon, Barry.  He became a gardener at Panmure for

the Earl of Dalhousie, Monikie. In 1869 David was a gamekeeper.  In 1881 he was a keeper of Panmuir

Monument in Monikie; all the family was with him except the younger William, who had died.

John had organic brain damage from about 1887 and entered the Asylum in Liff. He appears there in the

1891 and 1901 census, remaining until his death in 1915. Witness to his death certificate was the

Asylum Head Attendant Alexander Robertson.

David married Mary Scott  daughter of Thomas Scott and Lillias Law on 13 Jun 1862 in Monikie Panmuir Monument, Panbride, Angus, Scotland. Mary was born in 1841/1842 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. She died in 1907 in Monikie, Angus, Scotland.  

At the time of her marriage Mary was a domestic servant at Brax of Balmach. 1891 Mary lived without

David in Monikie with children William, Peter, Alexander, and Margaret. In 1901 Mary lived in Monikie

with children Alexander and Maggie.

 David departed Liverpool on the ship SS Lord Clive and arrived at Philadelphia, PA on 25 Apr 1893; he

was listed as a tailor on the way to join his brother and sister in Townsend, MT. Mary with children Mary

and David arrived in America on 1 Apr 1893, moving on to White Sulphur Springs, MT.  They were

naturalized U.S. citizens in 1894.  David worked as a tailor for two years in Helena, MT until he became

 a rancher on Spring Creek in remote Tierney Basin.  In 1900 he farmed in Bremer Township, Meagher

Co., MT (page 8) with his wife Mary, 6 children, and brother John.  In 1920 he farmed at Walled

Mountain, Broadwater Co., with his wife Mary, children David B., Pearl (daughter-in-law), Alexander, and

Nellie S., and one employee.  They moved to Toston, MT in about 1928.

 David raised award winning Brown Leghorn chickens, having won blue ribbons at the Chicago poultry

shows.  He even sold chickens to the Russian Government at $100 per fowl.  David also had a green

thumb and raised dahlias that grew a foot over his head.  He was know for his red hair and beard.

David married Mary Lesslie Gilchrist  daughter of Alexander Gilchrist and Jane Deason on 15 Oct 1884 in St. Mary, Dundee, Angus, Scotland. Mary was born on 24 Jul 1864 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. She died on 31 May 1944 in Three Forks, Gallatin Co., MT.
