Notes for James Irons Doig

Middle initial 'I" presumed to be Irons after his mother.

James came to America with his father in 1842 and became a naturalized citizen.

As a teenager James built a typesetting machine and engine so small that it barely covered a dime. The printers in Charleston forced Mr. Doig to leave town because they feared that his invention would put them out of business. He came to Florida intent on settling in Palatka, but he overheard some men discussing people he had known in South Carolina. He decided to settle near these acquaintances that now lived in Alachua County, so he walked from Palatka to Gainesville. His first job there was laying track for the Florida Railroad in 1859. James then started a sawmill to produce shingles.

When the Civil War broke out James enlisted on 20 Mar 1862 at Gainesville in the 7th Infantry, Company C. He was promoted to 2nd Sgt. On 1 May 1862. He served in the Confederate forces and served in Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia. He participated in the "Battle of Gainesville" on 15 Feb 1864 near the current intersection of Main Street and University Avenue. By 1900 James was not a naturalized citizen of the U.S., perhaps a reflection of his Confederate heritage.

From Confederate Veteran, Vol. XXII: "James I. Doig, who was sergeant of Company C, 7th Florida Regiment, Finley's Brigade, Bate's Division, Army of Tennessee, was in the battle about Pine Mountain, where General Polk was killed. His regiment was on the main line just below the brow of the mountain, and Comrade Doig had discovered that the Federals were placing a battery just opposite to where he was stationed; so he took this information to the captain of one of our batteries, who made observation and found it correct. General Polk came up shortly and took out his glass to locate the battery, and just at that moment he was struck by a shot from that battery and killed. Comrade Doig is now in his seventy-eighth year, a member of Stonewall Camp, U.C.V., of Gainesville, Fla., and lives at Waycross, GA. He was at the first bombardment of Fort Sumpter, in April, 1861, and served throughout the war, taking part in the last battles of Hood's army in Tennessee." James was paroled on 1 May 1865 at Greensboro, NC.

In 1869 James was selected to chair the committee to select and name, seal, and boundaries of the city of Gainesville. The city was incorporated according to his committee's recommendations.

By the early 1880s James had a large iron foundry business, where he made and repaired boilers, cotton gins, sugar mills, kettles and machinery for boring wells. The Doig foundry was located at SE 4th Street and SE 7th Avenue. It had 60 employees and received orders from throughout Florida. It was said that James could make anything from a carriage bolt to a locomotive engine.

In 1882 James built the "Doig House" at 708 E. University in Gainesville. The home features six fireplaces, cast plaster ceiling medallions, ornate plaster brackets supporting the base of the arches, and a Victorian painted verandah. The parlor has a large trompe l'oeil mural on the ceiling, a marble fireplace mantel with an Eastlake design and a bay window. This fine home was restored, and it is presently used as doctor's offices.

In 1885 James recorded a receipt from Charles L. Fides. In that same year James became the guardian for Mary Ray Blake and Robert Van Blake, children of the deceased Dempsey Blake. Dempsey Blake and George W. Blake served as executors to the deceased Anna Blake in 1882.

Also on 14 July 1885 Frances W. Doig petitioned as guardian of Willie May Darden, age 4-5, son of her sister Susan M. LaVey, who died 25 June 1885 in Alachua Co. His father was also named Willie May Darden. On 8 Aug 1885 she was awarded guardianship.

James wrote the story (Confederate Veteran, Vol. XX) of how in 1886 he befriended Robinson, a former Union guard at Rock Island Prison. He fed his family and cows, later finding employment for two of his sons. In James' words, "sectional feeling has no place when there is opportunity to help a one-time enemy."

In 1891 James Doig and Charles F. Rigg administered the estate of the deceased Susan M. Lavey.

In 1895 James and E.E. Voyle patented a new cotton gin. It was manufactured at Dutton cotton gins at the corner of what is now Depot Avenue and Main Street. Hundreds of the Doig cotton gins were sold in Florida, Puerto Rico, and Cuba.

In 1900 James was a machinist residing at 602 Ropers Avenue, Gainesville with his wife Frances and daughter Maggie; they were listed as having 5 children with 3 living in 1900. At home were Nellie and Maggie and an Annie Doig, born 1874/5 in SC. In 1920 they lived at 902 E. University.

In 1907 James filed pension applications (A02440, A05325) for his war service.
