James was listed as a maltman and brewer at the birth of his sons in 1777 and 1779. There is then a gap in the birth records when three daughters are born between 1787 and 1793. At the later dates he is listed as a porter indicating a reversal of fortunes. At his wife's death in 1794 she is listed as "poor."

Robert went to sea in 1815 as Apprentice on "The Patriot" from Dundee for the Baltic. In 1820 he was Mate on another ship on the London to Valparaiso run. In 1828 he served as Mate on the "Anne" (200 tons) from Chepstow and London to Rio de Janeiro. In 1838 Robert was Master of the "Margarets of Dundee" (138 tons) from Dundee and Grangemouth to Archangel. In 1838 he also served as Master on the "Aylesford," and in 1839 on the "James Watt." In 1841 Margaret was without Robert, living with the children at Parnell's Land, East Side, Dundee. In 1844 Robert was Master on the "Edward Robinson" (301 tons) from London to Macao, his last trip.

 

Robert died 14 Dec 1844 at sea on the ship "Edward Robinson" on the London to Macao run, on its return from China.

In 1845 Margaret, a widow, lived in two rooms at Lady Wynd, Cupar, Fife; she was a winder of weaver's bobbins making 1'6 per week and £8 per year from the Merchant Seaman Incorporation. In 1851 Margaret lived at 50 Kew's Land, Dundee. In 1861 she lived at 19 Nelson Street, Dundee, and all four children were living at home. The daughters were power loom weavers, and David was a mold maker. In 1881 she lived at 31 Nelson Street, Dundee with her unmarried daughters Margaret and Mary, both stationers. In 1891 She lived in St. Clement, Dundee with daughter Nelly (Mary, age 47).

 

The informant on Margaret's death certificate was her son David Doig of Joilie Street, Alyth.
