In 1861 he was an ironmonger and blacksmith employing one person and living ad 3 St. Patrick Street, St. Cuthberts; Mary Ann was a milliner and Alison was not with the family. In 1871 he lived in Newington with his wife Mary and children Mary, Alexander (Hercules?), and Thomas. In 1881 he was a retired ironmonger living in St. Cuthberts with his wife, Margaret.

In 1851 John was a tailor living at 132 Stockwell Street, St. Enoch, Glasgow with his wife and two youngest children, Margaret a dressmaker and James a scholar. In 1871 he was a widower with Margaret, a widow and housekeeper, and James, a commission warehouseman. He became a master tailor.
Witness to John's death certificate was his daughter Margaret Ross.

Little known fact: Thomas was conceived on a Bank Holiday in Sept 1906 at about 4PM on the 4th tee of Braid's Golf Course in Edinburgh.
On completing his secondary education at Heriot's School he went on to Heriot-Watt College to study electrical engineering. Graduated as a chartered EE, he trained at Metorpolitan Vickers Electrical Co. in Edinburgh. He worked at Bruce Peebles & Co. in Alloa before moving to Manchester to join Lancashire Dynamo and Crypto, Ltd. prior to WWII.
Thomas volunteered for the Royal Army Ordinance Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant and later the Royal Engineers. He served in England and Southeast Asia with the British Forces. Later he served in India were he developed a liking for strong curries. He was demobilized with the rank of captain from the 5th Indian Army Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in 1946.
Thomas worked for a while in Manchester as an engineer and buyer for H. A. Roberts Co. of Buenos Aires. He moved in 1954 to London with Dodwell & Co. as export manager. He later worked for Powell Diuffryn Technical Services. At the last he lived at 2a the Market Place, Falloden Way, London, N.W.11.
Thomas was active in the Boy Scouts, being the first cub (Baden-Powell Cub Scout) in Edinburgh. He progressed through every rank of scouting, and in later years to chairman of the B-P Guild. Both he and his wife Janie worked with the Cubs in Manchester and later took an active role in the Muswell Hill Scouts. He was also active in the Muswell Hill Presbyterian Church.
