James was a cotter, or farm laborer.

 

At a census of parishioners taken 17 June 1788 in Craig by Montrose are listed Anne, Elspit, and Hercules.  It is presumed that these are three of the children of James and Mary back in the parish of James' parents.  The location of James, Mary, and remaining children Helen, Agnes, Jean, Christian, Janet, and John is unknown.

 

James married (MRIN:4) Mary Campbell, daughter of Alexander Campbell and Helen Gibson (MRIN:5), on 25 Dec 1761 in Maryton by Montrose, Angus, Scotland. 20. Hercules (Hector) Doig (James, Alexander) was born in 1777 in Cottown of Pows, Maryton by Montrose, Angus, Scotland. He was christened on 1 Jun 1777 in Maryton by Montrose, Angus, Scotland. He died on 1 Aug 1857 in 36 Bristo Street, Castle of Portsburgh, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. He was buried in Dean Cemetery, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.

On 17 June 1788 Hercules lived in Craig by Montrose with Peter Ferrier and his daughter Jean, Margaret Cowlie with sons John and David, Anne Ferrier, and John Beattie.

 

Hercules was a weaver. In 1841 Hector Doig (55 not Midlothian) was a linen hand loom weaver residing on the south side of the Water of Leith, Dean, St. Cuthberts, Edinburgh with his wife Alison (50 Midlothian) and daughter Isabella (30 Midlothian) and granddaughter(?) Mary (10 Midlothian). In 1851 Hector was an agricultural laborer in Edinburgh with his wife Alison.

 

Witness to Hercules' death certificate was his daughter-in-law, Ann Doig, wife of his son James Doig.

 

Hercules married (MRIN:8) Alison Fairgrieve, daughter of James Fairgrieve, on 8 Feb 1808 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. Alison was born in 1783/1784 in Borthwick, Midlothian, Scotland. She died on 11 Jan 1852 in St. Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.

Hercules and Alison pledged marriage 7 Feb 1808 in St. Cuthberts, Edinburgh; he was listed as Hector Doig, weaver in Causewayside, and Alison was listed as the daughter of James Fairgrieve, mason, residing at Gilmorn Park.  They were married the following day in Edinburgh by the Rev. Mr. Preston, and the marriage recorded in Crichton, Midlothian.

He died on 12 Jan 1861 in 36 North Richmond Street, Newington, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland from chronic bronchitis after 12 months.

John was an agricultural laborer and servant in Lochquarriot, Bothwick in 1806-8 and at Gateside in Lochquarriot in 1810. In 1841 John Doieg (58 Midlothian) was an agricultural laborer residing at Muirfoot, Temple, Midlothian with his wife Margaret (65 Midlothian). daughter Mary (20 Midlothian), and Agness Johnston (2 Midlothian). In 1851 John resided at Man Murdoch's, Duddingston, Midlothian with his daughter Mary Doig (farm servant) and her children Agnes Murdoch (14 Temple) and William Murdoch (6 Borthwick).

 

Witness to John's death certificate was his daughter, Mary Murdoch.

 

Note: In 1841 - Agnes Leighton Johnston was born 18 Aug 1838 in Temple, daughter of William Johnston and Janet Mitchell. In 1851 - Agnes Murdoch (14 Temple) is probably the same girl.

 

John married (MRIN:9) Margaret Walkingshaw. Margaret was born in 1776/1777 in Midlothian, Scotland. She died in 1841/1851 in Midlothian, Scotland.

She may be the Margaret christened 17 Mar 1772 in Cranston, Midlothian, the daughter of James Walkinshaw and Marion Pride.

25. James Doig (Hercules (Hector), James, Alexander) was born in 1816/1817 in Borthwick, Midlothian, Scotland. He died on 27 Nov 1885 in Newington, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.

In 1841 James Doig (26 Scotland) was an engineer residing with a number of others at Queen Street, Tynemouth, Northumberland, England. In 1850 and 1851 James was a master blacksmith and gasfitter living at 19 Bristo Street, St. Cuthberts, Edinburgh with his wife Mary Ann and children Mary Ann, Margaret, James, and Alison. In 1861 he was an ironmonger and blacksmith employing one person and living ad 3 St. Patrick Street, St. Cuthberts; Mary Ann was a milliner and Alison was not with the family. In 1871 he lived in Newington with his wife Mary and children Mary, Alexander (Hercules?), and Thomas. In 1881 he was a retired ironmonger living in St. Cuthberts with his wife, Margaret.

 

An extract of James' testament reads: 26 January 1886 - Confirmation of James Doig, Ironmonger, sometime residing at 13 East Preston Street, Edinburgh, afterwards at Johnís Place, Corstorphine, who died 27 November 1885, at Edinburgh, testate, granted at Edinburgh, to David Crawford, Stationer, 75 South Clerk Street, Edinburgh, and George Mitchell, Joiner, Edinburgh, Executors nominated in Will or Deed, dated 15 April 1869, and Codicil, dated 7 June 1875, and recorded in Court Books of Commissariot of Edinburgh, 22 January 1886. Value of Estate, £896, 16s. 2d.

 

James married (MRIN:13) Mary Ann Barclay, daughter of William Barclay and Mary (MRIN:24), on 9 Nov 1841 in St. Andrew's Chapel, Tynemouth, Northumberland, England. Mary was born in 1818/1819 in Torryburn, Fife, Scotland. She died on 15 Jul 1878 in 13 East Perth Street, Newington, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland from intense gastric problem with vomiting. She was buried in Sighthill Cemetery, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.

Witness to Mary's death certificate was her son-in-law John McCrindle of 22 South Clark Street.

30. John Johnston Doig (John, James, Alexander) was born on 10 Apr 1806 in Lochquarriot, Borthwick, Midlothian, Scotland. He was christened on 4 May 1806 in Borthwick, Midlothian, Scotland. He died on 1 Nov 1880 in 132 Stockwell Street, Blythswood, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland from senile decay and chronic systitis.

Witness to John's christening was the Congregation.

 

In 1830 and 1837 John was a tailor.  He was later a house painter. In 1841 John (32 not Lanark) was a tailor residing in Glasgow with his wife Sarah and children Margaret and James. In 1851 John was a tailor living at 132 Stockwell Street, St. Enoch, Glasgow with his wife and two youngest children, Margaret a dressmaker and James a scholar. In 1861 he was a master tailor employing 2 men and residing at 132 Stockwell Street with his wife Sarah, son James (patern book maker), and daughter Margaret Ross. In 1871 he was a widower with Margaret, a widow and housekeeper, and James, a commission warehouseman.  He became a master tailor.

 

Witness to John's death certificate was his daughter Margaret Ross.

 

John married (MRIN:15) Sarah Brown, daughter of John Brown and Catherine McCarter (MRIN:31), on 23 Nov 1830 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. Sarah was born on 8 Nov 1795 in Kilmore, Argyll, Scotland. She was christened on 10 Nov 1795 in Kilmore, Argyll, Scotland. She died on 16 Jan 1870 in 132 Stockwell Street, Blythswood, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland from chronic bronchitis.

Witness to Sarah's death certificate was her daughter Margaret Doig.

 

They were married by the minister of Barony.  John was listed as a tailor in Glasgow and Sarah from Glasgow.

 

 

John and Sarah had the following children.

         40   F       i.   Margaret Doig was born in 1834/1835 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. She died on 10 Aug 1909 in Stobhill Hospital, Springburn, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland from senility and cardiac failure.

In 1871 and 1881 she was a widow living with her family at 132 Stockwell Street, St. Enoch, Glasgow. In 1891 she lived with her brother James in Shettleston, Lanark.

 

Margaret married (MRIN:32) John Abercrombie Ross on 22 Sep 1851 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. John was born about 1830. He died before 1871.

John was a laborer.

 

         41   M     ii.   James R. Doig was born on 4 Sep 1837 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. He died on 21 Aug 1892 in Alexander Place, Shettleston, Lanark, Scotland from nephritis and dropsy.

Witnesses to James' birth were Duncan Brown and John Brown.

 

In 1871 James was a commission warehouseman living with his father and sister Margaret at 132 Stockwell Street, St. Enoch, Glasgow; the two visitors were ballet dancers from London.  In 1881 he lived at the same address with his sister; two vocalists from London were visiting. In 1891 he and his sister Margaret lived in Shettleston, Lanark. He became a pattern book maker. Although deceased, James' company was the book maker for the Ladies Convener for the Glasgow Choral Union in 1893.

31. Mary Doig (John, James, Alexander) was born on 16 Feb 1808 in Lochquarriot, Borthwick, Midlothian, Scotland. She died on 18 Feb 1893 in South Leith Poorhouse, South Leith, Midlothian, Scotland from debility.

Witnesses to May's christening were Thomas Dewart and William Torrence. In 1891 Mary's place of birth was listed as Gorebridge, Edinburgh.

 

Mary signed her name "X." In 1841 she lived at Muirfoot, Temple, Midlothian with her parents and daughter Agnes Johnston. In 1851 Mary Doig was a widow and farm servant at Man Murdoch's, Duddingston, Midlothian with her father John and children Agnes Murdoch (14 Temple) and William Murdoch (6 Murdoch). In 1891 Mary was an pauper at the South Leith Poorhouse, Junction Street, Leith.

 

Witness to Mary's death certificate was the Governor of the Poor House, John Pringle. Her parents were listed as father Doig and mother Unknown.

 

Mary married (MRIN:16) Robert Johnson. Robert was born about 1804 in Of Midlothian, Scotland.

Robert was a plate layer.

Witnesses to William's christening were James Kay and William Torrance.

 

in 1851 William lived in Lasswade, Midlothian with his wife Penelope and daughter Agnes. In 1861 he was a coal miner at Paradykes Farm, Lasswade with Penelope and daughter Margaret. In 1871 he was an agricultural laborer at Roslin Road, Lasswade with Penelope. In 1881 William was a mole catcher in Glencorse, Midlothian; Penelope was at home.

 

William married (MRIN:18) Penelope Wells on 8 Jan 1842 in Borthwick, Midlothian, Scotland. Penelope was born in 1813/1817 in Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland. She died in 1900 in Lasswade, Midlothian, Scotland.

In 1891 Penelope lived in Glencorse.

 

William and Penelope proclaimed marriage and were wed the same day. Both were listed from Borthwick.

34. Mary Ann Doig (James, Hercules (Hector), James, Alexander) was born in Jan/Mar 1844 in Tynemouth, Northumberland, England.

May be this Mary: Mary Doig (age 27), servant, departed Liverpool in steerage on the ship "Austrian" and arrived at Baltimore, MD on 25 Oct 1873. She does not appear in the 1880 US census and may have married.

 

The marriage record in 1878 lists Mary as age 34, daughter of James Doig.

 

Mary married (MRIN:25) Thomas James Ballard, son of Thomas Ballard and Lucy (MRIN:92), on 1 Jun 1878 in Chefoo, China. Thomas was born on 28 Feb 1838 in London, England. He was christened on 28 Feb 1838 in St. Marylebone, London, England.

In 1890 Thomas was assistant tidesurveyor in Shanghai, China, then resassigned to be a watcher at Canton, China. He also worked as a harbour master.

Ballard (19 China, British Subject).

David served in WWI in the 5th/6th Battalion, Royal Scots.  He saw action at Bouchoir, France.  The village of Bouchoir was defended for some time by the 30th Division on the 27th March, 1918, but it passed into German hands until the 9th August, 1918, when it was recaptured by the 8th Canadian Infantry Brigade.

He served in the Army and was awarded the British and Victory medals. He returned to Scotland where he married in 1920, his daughter born there shortly after. He then returned to Australia with his new family. In 1930 he lived on Elliot Street, Enfield, New South Wales.

74. Thomas Brownlie "Tom" Doig (James, Thomas Brownlie, James, Hercules (Hector), James, Alexander) was born on 7 Jun 1907 in Morningside, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. He died on 4 May 1961 in St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London E.C.1, England.

Little known fact: Thomas was conceived on a Bank Holiday in Sept 1906 at about 4PM on the 4th tee of Braid's Golf Course in Edinburgh.

 

On completing his secondary education at Heriotís School he went on to Heriot-Watt College to study electrical engineering. Graduated as a chartered EE, he trained at Metorpolitan Vickers Electrical Co. in Edinburgh. He worked at Bruce Peebles & Co. in Alloa before moving to Manchester to join Lancashire Dynamo and Crypto, Ltd. prior to WWII.

 

Thomas volunteered for the Royal Army Ordinance Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant and later the Royal Engineers. He served in England and Southeast Asia with the British Forces. Later he served in India were he developed a liking for strong curries. He was demobilized with the rank of captain from the 5th Indian Army Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in 1946.

 

Thomas worked for a while in Manchester as an engineer and buyer for H. A. Roberts Co. of Buenos Aires. He moved in 1954 to London with Dodwell & Co. as export manager. He later worked for Powell Diuffryn Technical Services. At the last he lived at 2a the Market Place, Falloden Way, London, N.W.11.

 

Thomas was active in the Boy Scouts, being the first cub (Baden-Powell Cub Scout) in Edinburgh. He progressed through every rank of scouting, and in later years to chairman of the B-P Guild. Both he and his wife Janie worked with the Cubs in Manchester and later took an active role in the Muswell Hill Scouts. He was also active in the Muswell Hill Presbyterian Church.

They first lived at 2661 Cadborough Bay Road, Vancouver. Gavin has operated a marine electronics business since 1982 in Black Creek, BC a small rural seaside community near Campbell River on Victoria Island.  He caters to commercial and the yacht crowd, often meeting interesting people from the larger American yachts.

 

Gavin enjoys his kidís activities, being a soccer dad.  He is restoring a vintage 1959 Triumph TR-E.  Community projects include enhancing the local salmon streams.
