FEARFUL CATASTROPHE IN DUNDEE
Loss of Nineteen Lives
(extracted from Dundee Advertiser dated April 19, 1859 with permission of Dundee Courier & Advertiser by Morag Walker)
A fearful boiler explosion occurred here on Friday afternoon, involving a great loss of life and destruction of property at the Logie spinning mill of Messrs. D & A Edward & Co., Scouringburn. This work, which is one of the largest in Dundee, and employs a large number of heads, is built in the form of a parallelogram - a large building fronting the street, and connected at each end to another similar erection, an intervening space or court being left between. The place where the accident occurred was at what is called the east mill or that fronting the street.
At the east end of the mill, but separated from the mill itself by a strong partition wall, there was a building of three storeys, in the ground flat of which were placed the boilers, four in number, connected with that part of the spinning mill. The flat above the boiler room was occupied as a drying-flat, and in that, from the nature of the work, there were scarcely any persons employed. The flat above that was a preparing room and in that, and the attic above, a large number of women were employed, who have formed the largest proportion of the unfortunate sufferers by this accident. The number of persons usually employed in this whole building was about thirty. Along the east side of the building was a small street or lane, into which an entry gate opened. On the left side of this gate was the porter's lodge, and opposite this was the office, and another extensive and parallel row of mill buildings. These were connected with the front row by a strong iron-supported gangway or bridge.
Shortly before one o'clock on Friday afternoon, the eastmost boiler on the ground floor burst with immense force and a great crash, lifting almost the whole of the large building entirely in the air, and which, falling to the ground, became an entire mass of ruins. The boiler itself, broken into several pieces by the force of the explosion, being obstructed by the strong stone wall of the building, filled the adjacent lane with heaps of rubbish. The boiler which lay next to the exploded one was partially turned round, and sustained some injury from the shock, but the other two remained fast in their places, and bear on themselves little or no marks of damage. Two large iron flues were also thrown out of their positions, and lay quite across the road referred to. The porter's lodge, on the south side of the gateway, was also involved in the ruins, and the bridge across the court connecting the two flats came down with its supports, but was sustained in a hanging position by the strength of the iron rods fixed in the firm building. A dense cloud of dust arose from the ruined mass, enveloping the scene of the catastrophe, and for a short time preventing the survivors from ascertaining the extent of the calamity. When this had at last cleared away, the confused and shapeless heap of ruins soon told of what had occurred. The whole building has settled down into one mass of rubbish on the site where the boiler house had stood, burying workmen, machinery, and everything that has been contained within it. A gentleman, who happened to pass along Scouringburn at the moment of the accident, states that he saw a sudden cloud of steam rise around the east end of the works, the entire building above the boilers perceptibly rose into the air and fell down a mass of ruins to the ground.
The workmen in the adjacent mill, being the nearest parties at hand, were, of course, the first to render assistance in rescuing their unfortunate fellow workmen, and clearing away the stuff, and nearly the whole of the male workers in the place were speedily and energetically engaged in this work. A large accession of force was obtained from the neighbourhood of Irish labourers, who set heartily to the work in hand. The east mill in connection with which the disabled boilers, was, of course, immediately stopped, and the west mill was after dinnertime, also stopped for the day, in consequence of the excitement that prevailed.
The workmen commenced first in their exertions to clear away the debris, principally at the place where the porter's lodge had stood, near which there had been a boilermaker's shop, and from this latter they extracted one of the hecklemakers, named JOHN BINNEY who had sustained very severe injuries, one of his ribs being broken and with other hurts. The place where he had been engaged was only separated by a partition from the boiler room. Proceeding in their search, the men next found two lads names STEWART and LOGAN, in the same place, who were both injured, but not so severely, and these were both removed to their own homes, and be there in a fair way of recovery. In the conflicting accounts that are given of the findings, it seems that the next person found was a woman who had been employed in the preparing room, and who had been most severely scalded by the steam. She was carried into the packing house of the west mill to which all were temporarily removed before being sent to the Infirmary, when there was any chance of life. She died shortly after reaching the Infirmary. Another young woman was found lying across a sharp iron beam, with a quantity of heavy machinery above her. She was, of course, quite dead. The heat arising from the hot water and furnace was in many places so intense that before the unhappy sufferers could be helped the water hose had to be resorted to, to cool the machinery and rubbish.
Some of the women were found at the preparing machines at which they had been working. One young woman was carried into the counting room in a state of excruciating torture. Having been made out to be a person of the Roman Catholic persuasion, the priests, who were on the spot, administered extreme unction, performing the customary ceremonies in the case of a dying person, and engaged in prayer over her. Several others of the bodies were entirely roasted. The body of ADAM DOIG, a dyer, was found quite charred. Sheets were provided into which the remains of the dead were wrapped as they were disinterred from the ruins.
Another distressing case is that of an orphan girl, in which MR. SMITH, Seagate, had taken an interest. He had succeeded in obtaining her admission to the mill, and she had only been in the building a few hours when the tragedy occurred. One of the married women killed was seven months advanced in pregnancy. JOHN BINNEY, one of the sufferers mentioned above, is the father of a young family. Several children, who were playing near the same road, escaped with injuries more or less severe. The girl MITCHELL, from Aberdeen, whose name appears in the list killed, and who had only arrived from the north that morning, had come to the lodge door, along with another girl of the name of MACKIE, who was injured, seeking for work. The manager being called away, and a shower of hail falling at the time, he had asked them to step into the lodge, but they had not done so, but, it is said, crossed to the other side of the road, and immediately after the explosion took place, they were both involved in the ruins.
As is usually the case in such circumstances, there are many persons who have had narrow escapes to record in connection with this accident. The porter, JAMES STEWART, whose lodge was annihilated, had been called out by one of the clerks a moment or two before the explosion occurred, to arrange some goods in the packing house, and had not passed any time there when his usual station was blown to pieces. MR. TAWSE, the manager, had also a narrow escape. He had only crossed from the fated building by the roadway before mentioned, and got in at the door at the opposite side, when the road which he had just left fell along with the building. The counting house, although it had all its windows smashed, was only penetrated by one splinter, which coming through one of the emptied frames, passed clean through the room into an apartment beyond. The under-fireman too had just left for dinner and thus escaped in safety; while his companion verily lost his life at his post, as on clearing away a portion of the ruins, he was found sitting with his hand resting on his fire-shovel but quite dead. The wife of one of the firemen at the west mill coming with her husband's dinner had just arrived within a few yards of the Lodge gate when the building was blown up, and although some of the dust was thrown into her face, she happily escaped entirely unhurt.
Examination of the list of killed and wounded shows that the greater number of the survivors was employed in the reeling flat; in the preparing room below, the proportion of killed was larger, while in the drying and boiler rooms the only two occupants were both killed.
The search among ruins was kept up through the whole Friday night, as it was thought that all the bodies had been recovered, and about three o'clock, the corpse of a woman named JAMIESON was found, and it is believed that with this woman all the persons involved in this sad catastrophe have been recovered.
The work of clearing away the rubbish was continued throughout Saturday and resumed yesterday. The number of persons killed by this sad accident is thus eighteen, and fifteen sufferers survive. the patients in the Infirmary were yesterday, with one exception, all progressing very favourably and with every appearance of a speedy recovery.
It is not yet definitely known what was the cause of this awful affair, and rumour's busy tongue in fault of more authentic information finds cause for it in various ways. It is asserted by some that the explosion was caused by the overheating of the boiler, and by working it beyond its power, while others suggest an insufficient supply of water. It cannot, however, be yet definitely stated which of these causes is the true one. This accident, besides being the cause of the distress and misery involved in the actual loss of the life, will, it is said, throw upwards of 300 people out of employment for some weeks to come.
Interment of the bodies
The bodies of the sufferers by this accident have all been interred, either by the relatives of the deceased or by the proprietors of the works. One of the females, ANN TAYLOR, was, at the request of her friends, interred on Saturday in the Old Burying Ground, and the funeral was attended by a respectable company of friends and women. Next day (Sunday) six of the bodies were interred in the New Burying Ground. Six hearses were in attendance, and three bodies were conveyed to the Cemetery each time.
There was a very large following of mourners, including many of the persons employed by the works. The six thus interred were: MARY YOUNG, MARGARET CRAIG, CATHERINE COLLINS, ELLEN GOWANS, CHARLOTTE CRAMMOND and THOMAS WAKE. The company thereafter accompanied the body of JOSEPH CLARK, the fireman, along part of the road to Erroll, where it was conveyed at the request of the friends of the deceased, and interred in the cemetery there. Another body, that of MARGARET MITCHELL the young woman from Aberdeen, was kept at the works until yesterday forenoon, in order to allow of her mother coming from thence before the funeral. The other bodies were given up to be privately interred by their friends.
The list of deaths was increased by that of one of the females in the Infirmary yesterday afternoon, named ELLEN HARRISON. JAMES BINNEY, who was at first considered in a dangerous state, has been improving and is now thought nearly out of danger.
Those of the patients who seemed at all likely to survive were quickly dispatched to the Dundee Infirmary, where their injuries were promptly dressed. Religious consolation was also provided for the wounded and dying. One or two Protestant ministers were present on the spot, and two of the Roman Catholic persuasion were also in attendance on those of their own faith - which was a considerable number - who had suffered by the
accident.
During the whole afternoon the search continued with unabated vigour and energy and fifteen corpses were taken from the ruins. These presented a mangled appearance entirely beyond description and sickening to describe. Besides these there were exclusive of the two boys recovered from the severely injured extricated and sent to the Infirmary. From the mangled mutilated state in which the corpses were, much difficulty was found in identifying them, but the list of male persons killed were as follows:
JOSEPH CLARK, fireman, who leaves a wife and four children - Louson's Land, Pole Park.
ADAM DOIG, dryer, whose body was perhaps the most fearfully mutilated of any, leaves a widow and a grown-up family - Hean's Lane, Small's Wynd.
